Wisconsin landfill oil filter ban to start in January
MADISON—Do-it-yourself mechanics won’t be allowed to dump oil filters in Wisconsin landfills starting next month.
A new state law banning car engine oil filters or any other oil absorbent materials in landfills. That includes granular absorbents, rags and paper towels. Violators will face fines ranging from $50 to $2,000.
The state Department of Natural Resources estimates Wisconsin residents throw away an estimated 187,000 gallons of oil in used filters and 1.6 million gallons of oil in absorbents.
The DNR has posted information on how to recycle oil on the agency’s website.

So, let me get this straight. If I label my trash bag, "Contains used oil filter!" , my city trash collector won't take it? Another well-intentioned but idiotic (because of enforceability issues)law passed, while ignoring much more pressing issues.

I have the answer for what to do with used oil filters. Take them to the DNR facility on Morse st.

So, how long before the DNR bans garbage from landfills?

How about you tell us what we should do with them, instead of just telling us that we cannot take them to the landfill anymore???

With that exception in place, I'm fully in favor of this.

westorbust, the "Latest News" items don't have the same interface as the regular stories. The print edition stories that are released on the left side of the page have an interface for including photographs and links. Only 1 of the news sites running this wire story included a link to the state site.

Thanks for that DNR link, Sannio. I was a little freaked out until I read this on their page:
"An exception is made in the ban to allow the disposal of up to one gallon of oil absorbent materials from a non-routine spill."
(We should send the Associated Press a bill for providing the essential information missing in their otherwise worthless tweets. How those lazy jerks remain in business is a total mystery to me.)

Apparently it was difficult for the Gazette to post a link to the DNR site. That's kinda what the interwebz is for. thank you sannio.

There are no recyclers listed for Rock County at all. If someone knows a business or place that does take them please post it. I'd like to continue to do my own and do the right thing with the used oil filters.
