Police department’s OWI website operating sporadically

JANESVILLE—An extremely high volume of activity on the Janesville Police Department’s new Project Sober Streets website has resulted in intermittent failures of the computer system, according to a police news release.

On Wednesday, the department announced Project Sober Streets, which allows citizens to locate felons with five or more drunken-driving convictions, with at least one in the last five years, on an interactive map.

The website has received inquiries from throughout the United States, and the city’s computer servers have been unable to support the high volume.

The Project Sober Streets website will operate sporadically throughout the weekend. The city intends to have the website fully operational next week, the news release states.

The website is ci.janesville.wi.us/citysite/ProjectSoberStreets.aspx.

You are right and those of us this has happened to need to speak up. I have tried to no avail with my family. Someday he will rot in he__! I wish they would do a map like Project Sober of sex offenders in this area though.

scooter I am sorry this has happened to you. The man who hurt me also was never arrested. This proves that the sex offender website is not very effective. The men who have never been caught are the ones people should worry about.

Thank you for clarifying. I think pedophiles should be listed on a map of this sort. Sorry this happened to you, it also happened to me by my own brother-in-law. He has never even been arrested and the whole family knows of atleast 5 people he has done this to. My parents wanted to sweep it under the rug. That is long ago and over with. I just think a map of this sort would also help society. Sure Project Sober may help someone in the long run, but I don't see how.

scooter, are you aware that the word "sex offender" does NOT mean a person hurt a small child? Do you know the difference between a phedophile and a hebophile? Society has taken the words sex offender and assumes the worst. I think there needs to be a website for phedophiles who are likely to hurt someone again. I have been a victim and as a victim I do not want to be forced into unecessary fear. Putting all sex offenders on a website and simply stating the crime still does not tell the whole story. A boy who was 17 that slept with a 14 to 15 year(with concent) old 20 years ago is not someone who is going to hurt your 3 year old, but the 2nd degree sexual assualt that is listed makes society believe he will. Now the 30 year old man who molested a girl under the age of 10 should be listed. Do you see the difference? The drunk drivers that have been caught 5 times will likely be on the streets tomorrow drunk putting everyone at risk. There is no scenerio that explains the 5 arrests of drunk driving. It is cut and dry. I also believe men who have a history of abusing women should be listed.

schnckstac1, I understand your opinion. I just do not think this map is necessary. That is my opinion. I would much rather see a map on this same site listing the sex offenders in Rock County, their pictures and yes, the crime they committed. This would be more useful. Having a sex crime committed against a minor can actually end that persons life as can a drunk driver kill someone. That is what I am trying to get at.

So scooter, if comparing a sex crime to a drunk driver is not fair then what happens when that drunk driver kills someone? Killing someone is not just as horrible as rape? At least with this website they individualized the cases unlike with the sex offender site. When I look at the site I know each person has had 5 OWIs. The sex offender site just promotes unecessary fear because of it's lack of explaining each case's individualized circumstances. Sigma, I do agree a picture of their car would make more sense. No, it might not stop them from driving, but it does take away their privacy and put a label on them they do deserve. It also could be used as a deterent for the individuals who have had 3 or 4 arrests to stop before they too are put on the site.

schnckstac1, there is no comparison between drunk driving and a sex crime! Why doesn't Janesville put a map of sex offenders, pictures and what they did on a map on the same site that they have this map? I believe this would be more useful. I am with Sigma, just a waste of time and effort by the JPD. Don't they have anything better to do?

Sigma-So if one of your neighbors is on the list wouldn't you recognize them? I think the point is if someone you know is on the list and you didn't realize they shouldn't be driving then now you know and can call them in to get them off of the street.

schnckstac1 - I dont think anyone is against it... everyone just realizes it is completely useless information. So a drunk is on a website... it isnt going to stop him from driving, or smashing into someone. I dont analyze peoples faces I see driving... doubt anyone else does also....so knowing these people which I could care less about is meaningless...especially where they live... they dont drive their houses so why list their addresses? Why not the car they have registered? A picture of it?

Kinda funny everyone is all for posting every sex offender on the web (including the ones who are NOT a threat), but not for posting pics of people who drive on our streets drunk? I think it is a great idea! I would rather know the faces of people (and bars to know the faces) who are risking our lives everyday than the faces of people who slept with a girl who was 16 when they were 18 or the man who flashed someone! If I see a person on the website who lives by me, I will keep my eye out for them driving!! People who have had FIVE arrests for OWI apparently have not learned a lesson and they need everyone watching them!! These people have ALREADY done jail time, treatment, and more than likely the blow stick in their car. If that wasn't enough to stop them, then something else has to!! I guess I shouldn't be shocked that more people of good ole Janesville are against this! I mean hey, drinking and driving is promoted everywhere in this town! You want to go to a hockey game and have a beer? Go ahead! Then you can drive home with your kids in the back seat! I mean really, where is the common sense people!??!!

Inappropriate use of tax dollars.. Been trying all morning can't get the thing to work right. What's next speeding tickets. How about posting a picture of all the convicted shoplifters in the past 10 years, so they can be banned from shopping anywhere?

Maybe the next project will be flow sensors added to everyone's sewer outlet. This would be followed up by an interactive website designed to indicate and monitor who flushes their toilet the most within the city limits...I can't wait.

For those rocket scientists out there who again need something explained to them. I believe the site is intended to help you be aware of a problem drunk driver in your neighborhood. With that knowledge, you are then able to watch for this person on your streets, driving under the influence and reporting it. Theory is great but when most who are complaining are probably also driving drunk, they feel threatened.

One does wish the city had ramped up the server before going live with something unique that would have interest outside of Janesville, but it's hardly a big deal.

You said the same thing as I did but with a lot of hostility. I was wrong about arc server but I will still blame IT. You don't roll something out when you know it won't work or it has not been sufficiently tested. As for hundreds of thousands of people hitting the site? We are talking about Janesville right?

You really don't have a clue. You obviously do not know what the City is running. arc server? Seriously? You're trying to feed everyone BS here. The mapping on the web site uses Geocortex.

Here is the bottom line. There isn't enough infrastructure to handle the thousands of people trying to access the site and why, because all of the cheap skates in JVL don't think they should have to pay anything for any service and they have something coming to them for free. Fact is that the community wants to pay zero in taxes and when something new is rolled out there isn't enough infrastructure to make it work so hundreds of thousands of people can hit it at once. Period. So, if you expect everything to work all of the time for everyone at every moment you need to have a more realistic view of your tax bill.

The slowness has nothing to do with the police dept. The city's IT support is obviously inexperienced. Anyone that works with arc server technology would have known the existing capacity vs the new load this map was going to create.

"The project came at almost no cost to the city, Moore said. The department piggybacked on the city’s existing mapping system and used no overtime or additional staff to pull the project together." “The project is consistent with the department’s philosophy of identifying safety threats to our community and developing a proactive, problem-solving approach to these issues.”
