JANESVILLE—Janesville Police Department officers will begin a project today that addresses specific traffic safety problems.

A team of officers will address speeding and red light violations at intersections and on stretches of roads that have been identified as a concern. Their goal is to create a safer driving environment for all motorists in the city, according to a department press release.

Officers will target the northeast side of the city when they will focus on red light violations.

If no cars are turning south (left) off 14 onto deerfield, the cars turning north (left) onto deerfield will get a green along with the traffic heading east most times. Those cars honking at you should just be patient, or just flip them the bird!

Has anyone ever thought that the lights on Deerfield and 14 could be messed up? When I was turning onto Deerfield the green arrow was lite along with the straight ahead arrow on my side so I turned. People on the other side were honking and starting to go (almost hitting me) and yet my arrow was still green when I got through the intersection. Sometimes it is not always the drivers, mechanical errors can happen too and I think the city should look at this. It seems to be a common thing at this intersection.

I cut off a driver trying to sneek through on his yellow turned red left arrow when my light turned green. Guess he felt the Mack truck I was in was going to be no match for his car.

I do not think the police can put a dent in the problem by watching for a few days. When they are busy and can not sit there, it will be driving as usual. Its not just Janesville. Everyone is in a hurry everywhere. I have traveled to several states and its no better (if not worse) in any other city. It comes down to self accountability. 3,4,15, or 50 cops watching the intersections wont change a thing.

Janesville can't use red light cameras it is against state law to use them.

They use the cameras in other states... I lived in Phoenix when they started using them... red light violations went way down...

Why doesn't Janesville install Red Light Cameras at busy intersections? It's a great way to increase revenue and police the intersections without posting a police officer.

Dangerous intersections and violations? Sure, at the following traffic lights:
1. Hwy 14 and anywhere.
2. Milton Ave and anywhere.

gwendt: If the arrow is burnt out then use common sense and err on the side of caution and yield to oncoming traffic. The issue is that people don’t yield the right of way; they assume that no one is going to run them down. Your comment about the light being burnt out is completely invalid if it is burnt out and you fail to yield the right of way you are at fault not the other way around. Use some common sense!

All the "do gooders" on here just slay me. If the truth be known most of the posters here are probably just as guilty as anyone they are speaking of. As far as the cops go, they`ll be back hangin at Dunkin Donuts before we know it.

The red/yellow-light running has gotten so terrible in the past couple years here it's scary. It's about time the PD takes a serious look at it. I've seen sometimes up to 3 cars going through left turn lanes after the light turns red. It's a shame that people are in such a hurry to get somewhere 1 minute sooner that they'll throw all safety concern out the window.

I believe tailgating is also a very serious problem, maybe more so. It makes me wonder what people are thinking when they are doing it.

could it be that at Deerfield & 14, the people headed west are watching cars going into the Plaza on a green ARROW ?????? also, if light bulbs burn out behind a red, yellow, or green light, wouldn't it just be possible they burn out behind an ARROW light? what has happened to common sense ???

I agree with Swisschick, 14 and Deerfield is horrible for people turning left against the red and using up my green light!!!! Also the same at 14 and Pontiac, 14 and Lexington.

I agree 100 percent with this project. Next, I would love to see a focus on all of the drivers that don't even hesitate, much less stop, at a stop sign!

Sound like Wisconsin needs to change the laws so we could have cameras monitoring school zones and other busy sections

JozeMozes: Camera’s are not allowed by the laws in Wisconsin to be used for the intent of writing tickets so let’s not have that discussion.

I am all for cameras in residential and school zones Sannio. Idiots need saving from themselves often times.
-
I have been told on these blogs that my kid should not be on the street (no sidewalks turtle township) to ride her bike or walk to her friends four houses down by several morons.
-
This is the mentality of these idiots driving today. A road is only for a car and if I speed or break other traffic laws I do not understand that is my business even when I am taking others lives into my hands.

It been out of control for so long that it will take a long period of time to get people educated, take for example co A at Johnston, When people get to the 30mp sign beleive me they slow down, why? because the county sheriffs dept made a point of being there day in and day out, never knew when they were going to be there.

chelleandlou- I was always impressed by the fact that drivers in that area were good at slowing down when children are present. But then I guess maybe when the high school students get out things change. I am usually out of the area by that time.

My biggest concern is the speed of traffic surrounding schools before and after school. The speed limit, I thought, was 15 mph when kids are present; yet traffic is moving at over 35 mph on Mineral Point by Franklin. Not to mention the people who park in clearly marked no parking zones. The bus stop on Mineral Point by Franklin is always completely full of vehicles by 3:15. An few officers should be there writing tickets.

I think that's a good idea. Better than red light cameras any day. I usually don't mind if people take a little liberty in left turns on Milton ave, and other places. Sometimes the left turn lane can be so full that it starts to impede traffic in the lane next to it. I agree there is a problem with running red lights though.

The police have been too lax,too long. The bad driving has become a way of life.I always wondered when JPD would get serious, even for awhile. Sure other items occupy their time, yet if ALL manners of driving are let go,where do people stop? The reputation of Janesville's bad driving, lack of enforcement equals Chicago.
I say to JPD crack down on true bad drivers.
Your qoutas could be filled in one shift.

hey jofa how can they use their turn signals when the have a phone in their ear? And I hear what your saying there I always have the consideration to use my signal so there are a few of us that still have some consideration for other drivers.

Napalm it is thier everyday job. Their everyday job is also to go to fights, accidents, domestics, drug violations, and any other number of things that get called in. They are busy people and will never have enough time of the day or officers to make everyone happy.

14 & Kennedy... I drive there every morining, noon and evening. People fly through the lights on 14 at well over the speed limit all the time. I used to complain at people slowing for green lights, or not going right away... Now I do because I almost got creamed by a semi doing 60mph through a red. I hope they jack the fines up high too. I wrote an email to the city last summer about this. Im glad it only took 6 months or so to do soemthing about it... or something else triggered it...? And yes...it shouldnt be a "project", it should be their every day job.

Good! Check out Hwy. 14 & Deerfield Dr. The other day I was going west on Hwy. 14 and sat at the light on Deerfield. I waited for 9 vehicles turning left from 14 onto Deerfield after my light changed to green. The second to the last was a city bus. Huh.
