MILWAUKEE (AP) — A small earthquake that shook northern Illinois was also felt by residents in southern Wisconsin early Wednesday.

Sharon Holmes in Salem says her TV stopped working and her cupboards made a noise and shook.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the 4.3-magnitude earthquake hit near Virgil, about 50 miles northwest of Chicago, at 4 a.m.

The Kane County Sheriff's Department in Illinois received scores of phone calls, but there are no reports of injuries or serious damage.

One person from Milwaukee told WTMJ-TV she felt the floor moving and shaking and thought it could have been a snow plow dropping a blade.

I thought it was the wind, myself. Even got up with a flashlight to see which window was loose.

Likely culprit is the Sandwich Fault which, if I remember correctly, runs through Ogle, Lee, Dekalb, and Kendall counties and would be the nearest fault to where the epicenter was. Fortunately, none of the ancient faults in N. Illinois are capable of producing strong earthquakes (I believe nothing greater than 5.0 has ever been recorded in N. IL). Don't worry folks, this isn't a 2012 precursor :) These magnitude earthquakes happen in N. IL every decade or so.

I've been told that I could sleep through a world war. Now I guess that I can sleep through an earthquake too. Never heard nor felt a thing. Three dogs in the room never budged either.

Told the old lady I could do that...LOL , I was the only one in the house that felt it , new what it was right away but I stiil thought it had to be a strong gust of wind or something else.

Seismogram from Mountain Grove, MO...

.
Also, according to the USGS, it was a 3.8 not a 4.3. Either one is about equivalent to the rumble of a big truck or train passing by.

Living next to train tracks and a rock quarry for all those years must have made me ignore shaking of items in my home. It was like an earthquake every few minutes!

Heard a loud noise in the house. I first thought it was the wind but I also wondered about an earthquake.

That's the first earthquake I've felt in just over 15 years when I moved here from San Francisco.

Something crashed off a shelf and woke me up. I thought it was the cat up to no good. Guess she is off the hook now.

Definitely felt that one. Woke me up as the bed was vibrating and the strangest vibration noise. I, too, thought it was a plow or a big truck, but that seemed weird. My children also woke and thought it was thunder.

Interesting. The history of earthquakes in our area sounds like an interesting article.

I felt it on the northeast side of Janesville. Sitting, drinking coffee, I was waiting for the sound of the snowplow blade but didn't hear one. Plows were caught up by then anyway in our neighborhood. It was a definite deep rumble that sent a vibration through our house. Freaky feeling.

Woke up to the house shaking and heard a rumbling outside. Took a second or two to orientate myself. Knew what it was right away. Wow! A 4.3
Everyone else in my house sleeps like a rock. Thought they'd never believe me. Now it's all over the news so I have proof!
Remember a small one a few years back that heaved Hwy 26 heading toward Milton?
