La Crosse student missing after night of drinking

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — A La Crosse college student is missing, and authorities are considering whether to search the Mississippi River after footprints were found on the ice.

Twenty-one-year-old Craig J. Meyers of Western Technical College was last seen Sunday at 2 a.m. Police say Meyers spent Saturday night at a wedding reception and drinking at two bars.

Police Capt. Rob Abraham says a set of footprints leads out onto the river. He says authorities will have to discuss whether to conduct a river search, since the effort would be dangerous.

The La Crosse Tribune notes the search evokes painful memories for a city that has struggled with alcohol-related drownings. Eight drunken college-age men drowned in area rivers between 1997 and 2006. The FBI found no evidence of foul play.

So do you all REALLY think that men of the same age in the same city just all happen to drown in the same river? I am sorry, but I am sure the UNSUB is just tickled that he/she is getting away with this.

Really, how hard do you think it would be for a woman to lure a drunk man by the river for a nice stroll and push them in? Not too hard I would imagine.

Of course, if the male victim had his guard down because he was drunk and it was a female, then it would be ttly unexpected & then there prbly would not be any DNA evidence to support a homicide.

Nurse4u...and the bellyflopper did that on purpose....
You're absolutely correct. Beloit, Janesville, Rockton, Rockford, how many other river towns are there with bars near the river...yet the count isn't this high?
Heck, On The Waterfront in Rockford is basically a drunkfest every year and nothing happens like that.

I even wonder if it is a female serial killer, hence the smiley face. Of course the smiley faces would be found "after the fact." The police search the perimeter.

Janesville has many bars ON the river, as does Newville..and I have only seen one person who died and that was when he belly flopped into the Rock River with witnesses present.

No, I def think there is a serial killer on the loose & many ppl are trying to keep this hush hush...

JD5,
Your description is right on. In my 4.5 years at UW-L I don't remember ever heading toward the river. The closest I came was the LaCrosse Center and the Hotel...oh yeah and an ocassional meal at Piggy's.
.
I don't want to believe serial killer but something doesn't add up. I believe most of the river near the bars is blocked by businesses or fencing. I know there are parks/beaches but I don't remember them being near the bars.
.
On another note, bar tenders need to do their job and not serve people who are obviously FUBAR. I am not talking about the guy who shouldn't drive I am talking about the guy who doesn't know who he is because he is so drunk he can't see straight. Police, in all cities, need to start enforcing the bar tending laws. It will reduce not just Mississippi River issues but a number of drinking related crimes.

billnewbie...you are too funny! Although, this really isn't anything to joke about, sometimes a little humor goes a long way! Sorry for the families that have lost their loved ones to the great Mississippi River over the years.

They have some suspects for the La Crosse serial killer. All of these suspects were present near each of the victims. Coincidence? You decide.

One is a fellow who's known as Jim Beam. He may have an accomplice who goes by the mane Jack Daniels. Then there's a chap with a Russian accent whose only known as Smirnoff. But the prime suspect is a temporarily unemployed sightseeing boat operator who calls himself Captain Morgan.

Who knows, we probably have another Gein or Dahmer on the loose. Another reason to make our state proud.
When they DO find the house, the evidence, he will be the "quiet guy, always nice to the neighbors", but there were never stray cats in the neighborhood...

They said in the Wis. Journal, that his friend who drove him home from the wedding reception, dropped him off, nine blocks away from his home. Why didn't he drive him all the way home, especially at such a late hour and probably drunk!?!? Such uncaringness.

Last year there was a story in the paper about a young man, a UW-LaCrosse student, heavily intoxicated who was arrested for disorderly conduct after he repeatedly tried to walk into the river despite police attempts to prevent him from doing so. He kept insisting that was the way home.

JD5 is correct....the location of the river makes no sense for a person to go to. This man, Craig Meyers, was dropped off in the 700 block of Market St. You don't "accidently" walk 7 blocks onto the ice and into the river.

Nate Kapfer left his wallet and baseball hat next to the statue before he "took a swim" back in 1998? Come on! It was February! A coincidence that the same thing happened again in February? These killings in La Crosse are all white males around 20 years old.

The "smiley face" was only found a couple times, and most likely left there after the fact. There has been no credible evidence that this is the work of a serial killer or cult. I'll support the serial killer theory when some sort of credible link/evidence is found. People today are all too willing to explain away accidents with conspiracy theories. All that seems to be happening in this case is a lack of personal responsibility and carelessness. I would love to read about another explanation for these deaths, but unfortunately, they're just tragic accidents until some more credible evidence is presented.

ANOTHER LaCross student missing! What do they all walk out on ice? Or they jump in the Mississippi, when they're drunk? Is this close to these campuses?

I thought the FBI did find evidence of a smiley face drawn near or at the scenes of these "accidents" and that they suspected that there was in fact a serial killer?

This is just too coincidental to be accidental. JMO

Picture campus/housing on 20th street, give or take a couple blocks. Most of the bars are located on 3rd & 4th streets, with the river being "0 street", for sake of example here. Between the river & 3rd street, there are a couple hotels & office buildings, nothing to warrant traveling the opposite direction of home. Do I think these are all accidental? No. Do I think it's a serial killer? No. But I do agree that something doesn't add up.

Can the people who went to school and/or lived in La Crosse provide some clarification on why these aren't accidental?

I've only heard about this within the past few years and I'm open to see both sides of it.

No accident. Also, one of the other men that disappeared has finally had his disappearance ruled a homicide.
This is scary beyond belief... it seems to actually be a group/cult ritual.

It's the Mississippi River serial killer. This can't be coincidence. Drunk people never fall into bodies of water by accident. He must've been pushed. This would be the 9th drunk kid who's fallen into the river if that's what has happened here. Maybe these college cities along the river should try putting up some sort of fence along the river so these drunken kids stumbling home from the bars don't stagger into the river by accident.
