Student who drowned in La Crosse was intoxicated
LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — The La Crosse County medical examiner says the college student who drowned in the Mississippi River at La Crosse this week had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
Medical Examiner John Steers says 21-year-old Craig Meyers died of cold water drowning with his high level of intoxication and hypothermia as contributing factors.
Tests show Meyers had a 0.28 blood alcohol concentration when he wandered onto the icy river early Sunday.
His father, Ken Meyers, tells the La Crosse Tribune he doesn't believe there was any foul play involved in his son's death. Nine intoxicated college-age men have drowned in area rivers since 1997. The FBI found no evidence of foul play in the previous deaths.

just an observation - from the looks of the pictures, if he was 3 times over the legal limit, he walked a pretty straight line... My sympathy to the family.

Is it so difficult to think that alcohol + thin ice = drowning? Heck, I was at a party on Whitewater Lake when I was younger, the cops showed up and people ran out the back door. One kid ran out onto the lake and fell in, thankfully it was only about 3' deep where it happened. I'm sure liquid courage might induce a few people to run out onto thin ice not thinking about what they are doing. I'm willing to bet there have been just as many people who have fallen through the ice with witnesses nearby, you just don't hear about it because someone was there to save them or call the proper authorities.

Serial killer theorists, tell me this...how does someone get killed and placed in the river without any sign of foul play? Drugged? Toxicology would reveal that. There hasn't been a sign of a struggle with any of them; no bruising, bleeding, or wounds of any kind. There was one set of footprints leading to the river (in Craig's case). It's pretty obvious no one pushed him in with only one set of footprints. Is there one thread of evidence that foul play was involved in any of these other than weak theories being thrown around?

That's it--it's a spirit of the river and woods in the guise of a seductive female Siren that lures intoxicated young men to their water demise!
The owls are not what they seem...fire walk with me! Too bad Agent Cooper is still stuck in the Black Lodge and can't help us out on this one.

And now the people who think that alcohol + river = serial killer are here.

I even wonder if it is a female serial killer, hence the smiley face. Of course the smiley faces would be found "after the fact." The police search the perimeter( ie: Posterguy).
Janesville has many bars ON the river, as does Newville..and I have only seen one person who died and that was when he belly flopped into the Rock River with witnesses present.
So do you all REALLY think that men of the same age in the same city just all happen to drown in the same river? I am sorry, but I am sure the UNSUB is just tickled that he/she is getting away with this.
Really, how hard do you think it would be for a woman to lure a drunk man by the river for a nice stroll and push them in? Not too hard I would imagine.
Of course, if the male victim had his guard down because he was drunk and it was a female, then it would be ttly unexpected & then there prbly would not be any DNA evidence to support a homicide.
No, I def think there is a serial killer on the loose & many ppl are trying to keep this hush hush...

Very sad. Hasn't this been going on for years though, people disappearing into the river?

No, I don't think anyone is surprised, but this is a standard step in the investigation. It is a common behavior -- I remember a group of us preventing a friend from running across the ice on Turtle Creek, and a friend preventing me from climbing a fire escape ladder -- but that doesn't make it any less sad an outcome.

Everyone drinks at a wedding. Also, if you know LaCrosse, all the bars are on 3rd street, together. So the fact that he went to "not one, but two bars" is not only very typical, but a little low. Obviously there were bad decisions made as far as taking off by yourself but the behavior before is not that unusual for a college student.

Did anyone actually think alcohol was not involved? This young man spent time at a wedding reception and then not one, but, two bars after that! This was an accident waiting to happen. Sympathies to the family!

Alcohol was involved...what a shocker. I do feel sorry for what his family must be going through.
