JANESVILLE—A benefit for the Bertagnoli family of Janesville raised $42,000 to pay medical expenses for their son Caleb, who died Dec. 16 after swallowing a tack.

Caleb, 5, died three days after the tack became lodged in his throat. He went into cardiac arrest and lost oxygen to his brain.

After Caleb died, his parents, Dan and LeAnn Bertagnoli, decided to donate Caleb’s organs, hoping to save other parents the pain of losing a child.

The North Rock County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and family and friends from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church hosted the Valentine’s Day fundraiser at the Pontiac Convention Center.

Thrivent Financial members and others raised about $37,000, and Thrivent Financial donated $5,000.

A fund has been set up to help the Bertagnolis. To contribute, visit the Janesville branches of Johnson Bank at 1 S. Main St., 2021 Holiday Drive or 1309 N. Wright Road.

That poor family donated their baby's organs. IMO they shouldn't have a bill period!

The gazette ought to be ashamed for the title of this article. The story is filled with tale about the generosity of people in our community and yet the title of the story makes it sound as though the family is out there making money off of their child's passing. You could have come up with something better Gazette.

I agree with PBRMAn! We have earthquakes, floods, fires, unemployed, homeless etc, etc here in our country. We hold benefits, have comerical after comerical telling people to donate to another country yet what about our own? I understand all people need help but what I cannot understand is how our own country cant help itself yet we are the first ones to help another! Jobs are sent overseas because companies can pay them less and dont have to supply the benefits they do to us so yes I agree with PBRMan. I know its everyones choice who they help but it is just a shame we cant do more for our own country!!! I cannot imagine laying to rest my child! My heart goes out to this family.

This is a story worth reading and my heart too goes out to the family of Caleb. PBR 100% agree with you and the bashers can take a backseat on this one. Our country has helped many countries and how many have helped back. Did any other country hold a fund raiser for The United States of America after 9/11/2001.

Wonderful news. Though Caleb cannot be replaced hopefully the funds will pay medical and funeral expenses and maybe enough left for a memorial in his honor.

I am grateful for all who donated to this family. So very tragic and my prays go out to this family. However PBRman has a very justified point. I have thought it more than once, every time we send millions to other countries. I feel sorry for those in Haiti but what about the homeless and hungry in our own country?

God bless Dan and LeAnn Bertagnoli, and all those who donated to the fundraiser. As to those who criticize donations to this cause, other local causes, or national or international causes - this is an inappropriate forum to voice those criticisms.

Maybe there is hope for us yet.

Janesvillean, PBRman is right on the $$ when he made the comment about taking care of our own before sending money to Haiti, & what I find most distasteful is your poor attempt of moderating what PBRman (or anyone else) says here. As far as I know, the Gazette already has that position filled. "None of your business?!" What Non Profit exempt charities do is everyone's business. As a matter of fact, if more people actually checked out how charities they give to(a few.ie.e.U.Way) make traumatized victims of disasters pay back the money given to them ($ donated to them from us), & actually harass these families if they don't.. Now. enough time on you.

I'm just learning of this child's death, & as a grandfather to a little 3 yr old boy, my heart goes out to these parents. The only truly innocent humans are children. It bothers me to see so many children dying of preventable causes.. such as this tack lodged in this child's throat. I does a parent guard against that, other then watching 24/7, & trying to be vigilant at cleaning up. But even that doesn't guarantee the kids won't find the object some place else. I'm glad my two boys are grown, healthy adults. Now all i have to worry about is a grandson.

You are right PBRMan, there are people right here in janesville to help, and a generous community that supports those in need.
Why can't all news be good?

IMO
I agree with pbrman we have millions of un employed or underemployed, homeless and hungry people right here, I do what I can to help including working with a homeless ministry and have even taken homeless singles and families in my own home we need to take care of our own before we help other countries.

It cannot be disputed that donations to local charities decline in the face of international crises. Call and ask the private local agencies.
Blessings to this family and to all who are helping provide for their needs.

PBRman said..."I just stated I don't get it."

That's a fact.

The truest thing you've ever said.

PBRMan, who other people help is none of your business. Shame on you for setting up a competition of compassion. The only sentence you should have posted is the final one.

This is what it is all about. I can't understand everyone jumping at the chance to help those in Haiti when we have our own to take care of. I am thrilled to see the results of this huge act of kindness!
