Extra money for district attorneys approved
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – State lawmakers have approved spending money to pay for prosecutors’ salaries across Wisconsin to help district attorneys deal with budget cuts at the same time their workload is projected to increase under a new drunken driving law.
On a bipartisan vote, the Legislature’s budget committee on Tuesday approved the $1.4 million in spending over a two-year period.
The committee voted against an additional $815,000 to pay for adding nearly 12 additional assistant district attorney positions.
Prosecutors have been pushing for more money to deal not only with budget cuts but the expected added workload under the drunken driving law that takes effect in July. Among other things, the law makes fourth offense, instead of a fifth, a felony under certain circumstances.

Many criminals ARE assessed court costs, helge1939. Presuming that James Koepp, for example, who is now an indigent residing in state prison, can pay for his prosecution -- easily topping $1 million, I would guess -- is an unrealistic fantasy.

Those that get caught should have to pay the cost plus the fine

WTF; didn't they claim the increased fines and fees would cover the increased load?
