MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Natural Resources Board has adopted increases in deer population goals in more than 40 management zones under pressure from hunters.

Outraged deer hunters complained last fall the Department of Natural Resources’ herd control strategies have so thinned the herd their sport is in jeopardy.

The DNR in October proposed raising population goals in 13 zones. Legislators, feeling pressure from hunters, threatened to reject the plan without revisions.

The DNR’s new plan calls for higher goals in 43 zones, raising the state’s overall population goal by 60,000 to about 800,000 animals.

The changes will form the basis of rules for this fall’s hunting seasons. They’re still subject to legislative review.

I saw plenty of deer and got 2 this year. I'm guessing most people are just not very good hunters.

Hmmmmm. I thought the main argument of deer hunters was that they were helping to keep the deer population in check? Guess they're not quite as altruistic as they would have you believe.

Late in Feb. I observed more deer while snowmobiling around Minocqua area than in past years. Everyday while on the trails I came across at least 2-3 deer using the trails.

Well in northern Wisconsin it don't matter until they do something with the wolves. I have not seen a deer during deer season the last two years. But have seen plenty of wolf tracks. So if they give us a lower quota that just means the wolves get more to eat. Wisconsin wolves smoke a pack a day
