WHITEWATER--A Whitewater credit collections agency says the government takeover of student loans and ailing financial market contributed to its closure this week, leaving 116 people out of work.

Sallie Mae in Whitewater closed Monday, marking the second major layoff in the city over the last month. In early October, Trostel Ltd., which designs and manufactures custom seals and molded rubber products, announced 87 permanent layoffs beginning in December.

There's no reason to make the fact that the political system threw these people out of work political.

Got it.

actually, i'm a leftist liberal myself. I'm not sure that has much bearing on the conversation nor any of our personal feelings.

Pot, kettle, black, man with politics right in username. There's no reason to make this political, unless you're begging for a fight. But your name suggests you want a fight every single day.
.
The student loan system had become unwieldy, riddled with fraud and abuse, and desperately needed reform. It's an awful time to lose a job, but there's no reason to mourn this work passing for any other reason.

To those of you who lost your jobs: my sincerest condolences. You guys did great work.

I suggest you not hang out on this site, however, as evidenced by the posts here. Liberals will force you out of a job and then tell you you deserved to lose it, all the while telling you how much they care about you.

You have to have a cast iron stomach to listen to the left-wing hatred, condescension, and insensitivity you'll see here on a never-ending basis.

I worked there, and loved my job. Bottom of the barrel? If your referring to income, it probably pays more than you would think. If your referring to the job itself, this was student loan collection and customer service. We were there to help not hurt. Either way, many good people and families are without employment.

More and more Wisconsin jobs going down the toilet and yet the unemployment rate is dropping. Talk about conflicting news.

These were, in fact, very nice jobs for many people who had years of experience HELPING people. It supported hardworking families and very GOOD people. If somebody has intention to pay something and WANTS to make good on something, we would help them to the point where we would change their lives. The problem is, however, that so many people have little intention or think they have no ability and refuse to answer the phone. Bottom of the barrel jobs? Sounds like a short sighted opinion by somebody who might have known one or two former collectors - I loved my job as well as many people that worked alongside me. Bottom line is that 100+ good people lost jobs that they worked hard at and took a great deal of pride in.

I have close friends that worked there. They were good jobs that supported families. Thanks so much to Russ, Herb, and Barack!

It's a shame when any company closes or lays people off, but I'm guessing most of these weren't great jobs to begin with. Collection calling is about as bottom of the barrel as it gets. Every person I've ever talked to that did it hated it.
