JANESVILLE—The black-throated monitor lizard that has been loose in Janesville since at least Sept. 28 has been caught and is being held at the Rock County Humane Society.

Janesville police used a dog snare to catch the monitor at 5:46 p.m. Wednesday at 613 Williams St., Sgt. Mark Raztlaff said. That is the same yard in which it first was spotted.

Several people reported seeing the monitor in the area of Williams Street and Memorial Avenue last week. At least one person reported seeing it escape into a sewer.

The monitor will be collected and cared for by a local reptile rescue, humane society operations manager Jim Hurley said. The monitor appeared unharmed, although it will require a reptile professional to be sure, he said.

Just an udate for everyone concerned. Peter Pan is doing fine and has started eating. We are working on a huge enclosure for him and once he settles in he will start as an education animal for the rescue. I am so happy to hear the concern for his well being.

Maybe someone could make a one way trap for the lizard. Take a 50 gal drum and put it on its side, hook up some heat lamps and lizard treats. Make a hinged one way door with some heavy screen. I think it would like the heat more than the food right now.

Is it being held without bail?

They said on radio today this is NOT the same lizard.

So why do they think they "moved out of state"?
Is this what lizard number two told you?

What if they got caught with it and told to get rid of it or move out?!

I would think a "tv" site created by a video company could do better than a bunch of still photos with no sound, but maybe that is just me.

I am so glad the lizard was found and rescued. People who dump pets should be dumped themselves.

KLB you are the one that is obviously beyond pathetic. Why are you attacking someone for simply stating the facts? It is very apparent the Milton PD could learn from this. Anyway, glad to hear the lizard is ok and will be placed in good hands.

They are saying on WJVL this morning that the police believe that this is a second lizard that is smaller than the orginal sighting. Info. received says they believe that someone released the two in Traxler Park this summer and then moved out of state. I would guess an update would be coming on here shortly since this has been on the radio since at least 6 a.m.

No, the Gila Monster had an alibi. I heard the Monitor lizard is claiming police brutality

I saw the pics at localvision.com and it looks smaller than the pic taken at the first sighting, could it be another? Maybe the person who lost control, had more than one?

Freedom - According to Jim Hurley of the Rock County Humane Society, it is a black-throated monitor lizard.

You can see pictures for yourself in Thursday morning's paper. Pretty handsome, for a lizard, I thought.

Are they sure it is a monitor lizard? According to other experts, it is NOT a monitor, but a helo monster (sp?), but the police department ignored a taxpayer's concern that they got it wrong.

Hey JPD could you have a class for the MPD on how to catch an animal without killing it?
