Rock County Humane Society burglarized
JANESVILLE—A burglar broke into the Rock County Humane Society on Wednesday and stole about $2,000.
The burglary was discovered at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday when an employee found a broken window where the burglar entered the building, Janesville Police Lt. Tim Hiers said.
The burglar damaged an office door and stole cash or checks, Lt. Rick Larson said. About $200 in property damage was reported.
Police have no suspects, Larson said.

Maybe they were mad that they were bilked for money by not telling the owners their pet was their until the bill was outrageous Been there and holding the dog when it was to be released as to RCHD saying it was and again an added cost. I to hope they catch the burglers yet I have problem with the above mentioned issue and it needs to change.

...and by the way, if you happen to see or hear of any kids (most likely high school age to early 20s) in possession of or selling an inordinate number of newport box kings and 100s cigarettes, single cigarellos (white owl and swisher brands, regular and flavored), phillies cigars, or rolling papers (zig zag brand white and orange packaging) please let me know...especially if one of them is wearing a very distinct Metal Mulisha hat with the skull logo front left of center, a plain brim, and a star pattern on the rest of the hat. Also, I'm offering a reward for the return of my Zig Zag dispenser. If you have any information on any of this call the police at 755-3100.

I am the person that said the quote the police gave to the newspaper about our camera system was inaccurate. Its new. It doesn't need to be upgraded. A number of the cameras are even infrared, but it doesn't really matter when their faces are covered. Not to mention they were only on camera a very short time before the alarm went off. Saying things like that makes us even more of a target to these idiots than we already are. Due to our alarm, they don't have an opportunity to get much, but they still cause a lot of expensive property damage in the process or trying. I will blame both the officer for saying it, and the gazette for printing it. It would have been much better for all involved to tell the newspaper that the suspects faces were covered than to blame the fact that they can't see them well enough on the camera. We could see them well enough to know that their faces were covered. I can guarantee you the people that commit these kinds of crimes are morons. There is no common sense with these types of criminals, and the police deal with them every day so should know better that to put that kind of information out there. The Gazette should have enough common sense not to print it. Printing the dollar amount will make a location a target. It won't matter if the place makes changes, that information is out there and these idiots will assume there is something to be gained by breaking in, or worse yet, showing up while they're open and robbing the place. It does not benefit the community to know how much money was stolen, it only puts more people and businesses at risk.

Li17/ Don't blame the police for what's put in the newspaper article, it's the reporter and editor's choice to print it. I say good for them, it will incite change on the part of these businesses. The RCHS should not have that much money sitting overnight unsecured in a accessible place, they need to change their procedures. As far as the grainy camera images, an employee said they were not grainy. If they are, the business needs to replace them.

Here's an even better question....why would the JPD, and then the gazette broadcast that the humane society had that much money on hand? Way to make them a target for future criminals. Why is it absolutely necessary to print the amount taken? Wouldn't it be sufficient to just say there were cash and checks stolen? There is just no common sense anywhere! Of course these are the same geniuses that gave and printed a quote saying that the cameras at the BP station that was burglarized were grainy and basically worthless, which isn't even accurate since the video was clear enough to see some distinctive clothing and that they had their faces covered. The things the police say and the gazette prints about these types of crimes are just setting places up to be targets.

Why would any business have 2 grand laying around after hours ? Most businesses make deposits or put funds in a safe. Sounds fishy to me,I bet we will be surprised to see who did this. Just sayin

The article says cash or checks. Adoption fees for pets aren't cheap: http://www.rockcountyhumanesociety.com/a...
If the Humane Society had several adoptions and performed services such as microchipping during the day, it wouldn't be surprising that they might have $2000 in cash and especially checks at the end of the day.

Sad thing is.. I cannot help to think it was probably an employee who obviously knew where to find cash at a place begging for donations! They bring people in there on work release from jail still? They did in the past.

Unless you have a large, heavy, steel safe to put that $2000 in overnight, it should have been deposited at the bank during the day. Basic Business Policy 101.

I think it has more to do with the fact that it's a type of charity. I'd get just as upset if someone robbed a food pantry. Robbing anyone is bad, but there is an even lower level to stoop.

Where are these same people when crimes are committed against people?

I am with frogger on this one too. If not someone who has knowlege of the inner workings of the RCH why would anyone bother to rob them? I may be no rocket scientist, but heck I would NEVER expect $2000 be sitting in the RCH...I would have thought some other business or even a home would be more worth while to rob.

Seriously? Have things gotten that bad. I'm no CSI, but this has to be an inside job. Someone who used to or currently works (or related) there would be the only ones to know this much cash was on hand. There would be no other good reason to rob the Humane Society unless someone had knowledge of the cash on hand.
