Feingold calls for 6 debates

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold says he wants to debate his Republican opponent six times before the Nov. 2 general election.

Republican candidate Ron Johnson's spokeswoman Sara Sendek says he remains focused on Tuesday's primary and hasn't committed to any debates. She says Johnson will talk with Feingold and debate organizers after the primary about debates.

Johnson faces nominal opposition in the Republican primary from Watertown businessman Dave Westlake and Milwaukee plumber Stephen Finn.

Feingold says it's imperative Johnson debate him to outline his positions in more detail. Feingold says he wants to have Johnson say to his face that being a career politician is not a worthy profession.

RAF, I'm glad to see that (since you've retired from the air force) you've gotten a job as Feingold's schedule assistant. Make sure you plan a nice victory party for him on November 2nd.

All I really want to know about these 6 debates is how much of my tax dollars will get burnt up for such items as additional law enforcement for security, etc. Do the candidates have to pay back the municipalities where they debate for these additional costs?

JustStoppingBy, reality is not on your side. He had time to be in milwaukee both before and after the parade. He avoided that day like he did the other two days in the past ~2 months when the president was in state. You don't have to like the truth, but making up excuses for him not being there doesn't change the fact he neglected to be in the same place with him.

Caveguy you bring up interesting points. The reality in the two party system with rules for elections, debates, nominations, petitions, canvassing, and district lines all controlled and run by the two parties. The incumbent has the advantage in all races to include using government money to mail out fliers to constituents.

The argument you use is one that Feingold relayed to me in correspondence on these two very issues; term limits and finance reform. He stated, as you have, term limits are not needed because the voters have the power every election cycle. In the same letter he proclaimed that financial reform (campaign finance) was needed because special interests have all the power. When I replied back asking how he can have these two contradicting points, the voters have all the power and then say the special interests have all the power, his office declined to respond.

The obvious conclusion is term limits are needed to remove the party influence. The sole reason both parties play this game is to have a majority position and then control chairmanship seats. With these seats they control money flow from government and donation flow to their respective parties.

The cycle is never ending, as the last 10 years have obviously shown. Both parties have held all branches of government and both parties failed miserably at making positive changes.

RAF, the facts are not on YOUR side. You implied that Feingold was running away from an Obama event by stating "...to include the one just this week". You made an incorrect statement and I merely corrected you.

When you attempt to spin every single thing that comes your way, you end up looking ignorant.

I would just like to point out to the people that believe there should be congressional term limits, the simple fact, there already are. In fact, it is clearly written in the constitution that the members of the House of Representatives are elected every two years. As for the Senate, each member from each state will have elections for their seat every six years.
.
I understand that those that are arguing for term limits mean that there should be a set number of terms someone should be allowed to work in Congress. However, this is why we have elections. If this person is failing to represent their constituents, then they will no longer get elected.
.
Unlike the position of President, the powers granted to each member of Congress are divided amongst many. I realize no one wants to have corrupt Congressman, but putting term limits on them will surely lead to this.
.
Lobbyist will be more likely to persuade new politicians with a limited time in office into doing their bidding. This is because they can offer incentives for when the politician is no longer in office.
.
As it stands, failure to be re-elected is a motivator for doing a good job. Without that, what really would be stopping someone from doing some backroom deals in exchange for a nice seven figure job when they're done in office?

RetiredAirForce, Feingold didn't "run away" from anything. The reason he wasn't in attendance for President Obama in Milwaukee was so he could be at the parade in Janesville. Nice try though.

Typical right wing spin rears it's ugly head yet again.

I welcome these debates so Mr. Johnson can FINALLY tell us how he is going to go to Washington and "fix" all these problems. It is one thing to say it because you know everyone wants to hear it, but to come up with concrete solutions is another thing. I will admit the right will probably control Congress after November because people have short memories, but I will also expect 100% change in 18 months or less just like they did with Obama. I will be watching....

as for senator feingold being a career politician, well, if i played baseball for 28 years, would i be a career baseball player?
feingold was elected to the WI senate in 1982 -- served there until he was elected to US Senate in 1992. That's 28 years of serving as a "politician."
me thinkie he be a career politician.

Feingold is proposing six debates hoping to get Johnson to feel like he has to agree to maybe three or look like he's chickening out. I'm not going to say Ron Johnson is an idiot; he's probably a very smart man and built up his business and so forth.
But Feingold knows in debates Johnson is going to be out of his depth and people will notice it.
It's time for a backlash against all this if you are an incumbent you are evil and the less you know the better we are nonsense.
It's so simplistic and stupid it's galling. I mean the argument is things are bad so anyone holding elective office is bad. That's the same argument as things and bad and I usually wear white socks so white socks cause all problems. You couldn't get more stupid. But then again, no one ever won money betting the American electorate would only be swayed by facts, reason and supported arguments.
Here is what is missing from all this anti-incumbency manure: a pledge to serve no more than one term, no matter what you're running for. That really would change the process. Then they would not have to start raising money for the next election the day they take office and all the compromises that entails. That would really be something. It'll never happen. You Johnson supporters, think your guy would pledge to only accept one term? Good luck with that!
