Janesville police investigating string of strong-armed robberies

JANESVILLE -- Four strong-armed robberies or attempted robberies were reported last weekend in Janesville, including three that could be related.

Janesville Police Lt. Tim Hiers said a jogger was in the 800 block of McKinley Street at 1:30 p.m. Saturday when four or five men started chasing him.

The men asked the jogger to give them money, but the jogger kept running and got away, Hiers said. He later called police.

Later that night, a woman was walking home from a convenience store at 9 p.m. when four or five men approached her near McKinley Street and Center Avenue, Hiers said. The men stole the woman’s wallet.

An hour later, a man was getting out of his car in the 900 block of Rockport Road when four or five men asked him for money, Hiers said. The man told them he didn’t have any money, and he was punched.

About two hours later, a man ordered several pizzas to a vacant home on Washington Street, Hiers said. When the delivery driver arrived, a man robbed him of his cash.

The first three robberies were likely related, Hiers said. The crimes don’t appear to be gang related.

“Many of our robberies or thefts that occur are not stranger-on-stranger crimes, or they’re drug related,” Hiers said. “That’s not the case here.”

The robberies remain under investigation.

Anyone with information about the robberies should call police at (608) 755-3100 or Janesville Area CrimeStoppers at (608) 755-3636. People also can text information to 274637.

Tipsters can remain anonymous and might be eligible for a cash reward.

I tell you what- if these guy's confronted me I would think my life was in danger and I would be fine with anyone that shot these guy's. They do a crime like this they are prepared to use dealy force without a dought. I can see a "Deathwish" type of person just going down there looking for an excuse. This city will be really bad in a couple of years. A gun store will be a good business to start in Janesville.

Triggerhappy, it's comments like that that give the anti-gunners the impression that all gun owners are...well, Trigger happy idiots!!! you CANNOT use deadly force unless you are truly in fear of your life!!! If someone is just yelling at you to hand over your money, that is not enough to shoot them! 5 people hitting or kicking you, yes. If they have a weapon, most definitely.

I am sure that this was a traumatic experience for the victims, but I am struck by the fact that all three were not sure if it was four or five men. Just a coincidence, or does anyone else find that odd? Maybe they were huddled together, so it was hard to tell. It would probably look like six or seven to me.

gmaof3 Has it ever crossed your simple mind that this was all the information Ted had ! Criticize all you want but Ted always does a good job and if it bothers you so much call the JPD and see what they tell you,the Gazette and any other news source, takes what they can get and nothing more. If the PD lets out the sketches or any other info to soon it will damper their investigation.

Glock21sf "no one has even known the law existed until the paper did an article on it". Your kind of right, but there is no law that allows open carry period. We only have laws that restrict gun carry, none that allow it. So because we have no law that prohibits the open carry of a firearm, by default its legal.

Seriously? Once again, a "vague" story from the Gazette! This time, Ted Sullivan wrote it. How can we possibly be aware of the criminals, without better descriptions? I don't care where these incidents occur, without a description of some kind, its mighty difficult to know who to watch for. Come on Gazette, the first 3 strong-armed robberies or attempted robberies had victims who have info we could ALL use.

magog2k said "But if you can carry a gun, so can they........ 3 of them sound similar?"

Yes they can as well, but they are not legally allowed to do so, (they are committing a felony) and they are concealing theirs, at least the legal Open carry crowd are not hiding theirs and using them to commit crimes. And because they are carrying is exactly why we should be allowed to as well.

I think I will start practising the open carry law in this area. Drop just one and the rest will think about it before they try it again. Thugs beware, more people are starting to carry guns legaly. Not that they read any of this. Citizens start practising your right to carry a gun. This type of behavior will stop in a hurry.

Familyoffour, there is no NEW law about being able to carry,(that is the correct spelling by the way) Open carry in WI. has been allowed for decades in WI. and you have not even noticed, that is because there is no PROBLEM with it, no one has even known the law existed until the paper did an article on it, now it will be thrown in the face of gun owners from now until concealed carry is put into law. I would advise those of you out there who are afraid of, or opposed to guns to at least go to Gander Mountain or Addie's gun shop and purchase some pepper spray if you are going to be out walking or jogging, or delivering a pizza, or just going about your daily lives, because gangs and thugs do exist in Janesville.

Wasn't it just a couple weeks ago that people were saying there was no reason for the two guys to carry their handguns around? After reading the story on the "Melee" I changed my mind. While we're a safe community in a relative sense, there are still a lot of dangerous people around.

But if you can carry a gun, so can they........ 3 of them sound similar, but the pizza delivery robbery isn't the first time that's happened. I used to be a delivery driver, and we were told to carry only $20 in case of a robbery. Not to say I didn't have my tips or personal wallet on me at the time..... Never got robbed, but several drivers around the area have been mugged before--it doesn't always make headlines......

Regardless if it was only the one, it appears to be the same group operating in both daylight and darkness, which is pretty concerning to residents. I have a dog to walk at the moment, but I also have family members who are more vulnerable even with the dog.
.
Property crimes are known to rise and fall with the economy, so I do hope this is not the start of a trend. We have had a couple of generally quieter summers in the Fourth Ward and usually it's the summers that are the worst.

wolflicker,
I think it would be great to set up some sort of trust fund that helps troubled youth. Maybe if more social programs existed to help steer and keep at risk youth out of a life of crime, this sort of thing wouldn't happen. But Nah, let's do it your way and lock everybody up for life. Because that makes things much safer and less expensive, right?

What? Happened in daylight? Let see here:

#1 Janesville Police Lt. Tim Hiers said a jogger was in the 800 block of McKinley Street at 1:30 p.m. (DAYLIGHT)

#2 Later that night, a woman was walking home from a convenience store at 9 p.m. (DARKNESS)

#3 An hour later, (10:00 p.m.) a man was getting out of his car in the 900 block of Rockport Road. (DARKNESS)

#4 About two hours later, (Midnight) a man ordered several pizzas to a vacant home on Washington Street (DARKNESS)

I would say all occurred in the darkness except 1.

Where is everyone that seem to always want to blame it on Obama and/or the economy? These things always happen and now that the economy still stinks, it's getting more attention.

Why can't we just call the kettle black and say it's idiots thinking it's cool or are so desperate that they think this is the only way of life.

It concerns me that 3 of these crimes happened in daylight hours and that there isn't more information about the description of these guys. I walk near the area once a day and don't carry cash, but I do carry an attitude and refusal to be intimidated. Not wise in every situation.
