JANESVILLE—Janesville police are seeking the whereabouts of a large monitor lizard sighted twice Tuesday.

Amber Downing reported the initial sighting at 3:35 p.m. in the 600 block of Williams St., said Lt. Terrence Sheridan.

Six hours later, Tracy Smith was driving in the area of Hyatt and Thomas Streets when the headlights of his vehicle caught a “large green lizard 4.5 to 5 feet long” in his line of vision, he told police.

When police arrived on Williams Street, the lizard was gone.

Later, Smith saw the lizard escape into the sewer drain where he was.

Police urge anyone who sees this lizard to call (608) 757-2244.

“We ask that people in the area keep an eye out and if they see it don’t approach it. Give us a call so we can come and catch the thing,” Sheridan said.

If hungry or cornered they can be dangerous, especially that size. Unfortunately it looks like someone set it loose because they couldn't handle it.

This lizards are very dangerous. My brother use to have ALL kinds of reptiles since he worked in a zoo and now lives in Florida. You DO NOT want to try to catch this thing on your own. Depending on what kind of Monitor it is it can be VERY dangerous. Some Monitors have venom that will kill in seconds. They are VERY fast also. I hope they don't harm this beautiful creature and capture it soon so no one gets hurt! Be careful Janesvillians!!

My uncle was just here from Florida and said they have a huge problem with these in his area. People get them as pets and then when they get too big they let them go. Unfortunately, they breed and multiply and now they're all over. He said people are starting to lose dogs and cats because the lizards are hunting them.

These lizards are dangerous, but typically scared of people. My guess is that it was a pet and someone either got tired of taking care of it or it got out without them knowing. Keep an eye on your pets when you let them out to do their business. Nobody wants to see Fluffy being eaten by prehistoric monster.

That lizard is in the neighborhood of the Salvation Army. With frozen turkey donations down this year, let's hope Mr. Hurley gets a chance to capture the critter before it winds up full of sage dressing with raisins.

In the sewers of Janesville you say - You probably should lift the cover and check before using the water closet this morning. Ouch!

Afraid of people? At 5ft long those things will hunt you down if hungry. Probably an escaped pet. So small kids and animals could be targets.
