2 Wisconsin Democrats keep their Senate seats

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Two Democratic Wisconsin state senators targeted by Republicans survived their elections Tuesday, ending a tumultuous summer of recalls spurred by anger over how lawmakers reacted to Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal curbing collective bargaining rights of public workers.

Democrats picked up two seats through the nine recalls but were unable to wrest majority Senate control away from the GOP, which now holds a narrow 17-16 majority. Before the recalls, Republicans had a 19-14 edge in the chamber.

The two senators facing recall Tuesday were among the 14 senators who fled the state in February in opposition to Walker’s proposal which passed despite their absence and has been held up by the state Supreme Court.

Democratic Sen. Bob Wirch of Pleasant Prairie defeated Kenosha attorney Jonathan Steitz, and Sen. Jim Holperin of Conover beat tea party Republican Kim Simac of Eagle River.

A third Democrat won a recall election last month. Two Republicans were defeated in six recall elections last week.

Even though they remain in the minority, Democrats were savoring Tuesday’s victories.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said Democrats have “fundamentally changed the face of power in the Wisconsin Legislature” through the recalls. Even though Republicans remain in the majority, Tate said Democrats’ picking up two seats and making gains in Republican districts sets the table for big wins next year.

Not with that article analysis. 35 million dollars will not be concentrated in 2012 to a handful and you want to recall Walker on election day in November 2012..hahahahahaha

71% of the country disappove of Obamanomics.
I say, good luck with that.

getting back to SB1 - divided with Walker winning 52% of vote the first time. Divided then, divided now and Prosser won with that 7000 state wide votes, not 7000 concentrated as article claims- state wide wins for GOP. Keep that in mind PF

So all those years of 17-16 Dem control under Doyle wasn't division? Or are you just coming late to the political party?

I saw your CNN paste on other site and you just simply proved everything I've been saying.Thank you!

Federal Government is too big and in too much of people's business to the point that it gets harder and harder for states. States rights for local government for the people -it's in the constitution. Federal was meant to be so small that we wouldn't like about them.

Worst part about liberalism is they think they know more about what's good for me then I know what's good for me. Plantation Politics.
Rush read a great piece today posted by a liberal Hillary supporter that there is no difference between slave owners and Democrats.

Keep em down, Keep em clothed, keep em feed, limit education, lie about the enemy to scare them in exchange for loyalty. Years and years of it working for blacks, gays, and Jews.

I wish I could remember the web site. I only been saying that for years too. Glad some black liberals are starting to see it.

Well, the voters spoke again, and in a legal way.
I am OK with that, but will still vote to KEEP Walker in office if a recall does come up.
And as stated, a majority is still a majority.
No whining here about the Dems. holding on....even though I am not pleased with it.

I love it! SB1 when I said deal with it, was called a poor sport. Majority is majority and yes the state is very divided thanks to the 14 flee baggers for running scared and creating all the cost and damage. Doyle worked for years and years with a 17-16 split- this is nothing new for our state.

Enjoy your Rental seats for now liberals in the tune of 35 million dollars.

Yes Holperin & Wirch were able to hold on to their seats, which was unfortunate but not totally unexpected. The Wisconsin liberals and the Democratic senators themselves need to be reminded that all 8 of the recall elections were heavily financed by national unions with union foot soldiers, while most Republicans spent their time working hard to support their families. Additionally, teachers on their very generous 3 month vacations were able to go door to door in all these districts. Having been trained in personal persuasion and motivation, who better to have spread the propaganda? They may claim a victory (which I heard touted from both senators this morning on the radio) but it could hardly be considered fair and balanced. All in all, Republicans held their own considering the manpower available. The election board that scheduled these elections knew what they were doing holding them in the July/August time frame.

My girl lost, RATS!

Now, who will be the RINO to flip and give the majority to the dems?
(I'm just spitballing here)
What did the dems spend on two seats? Was it 30 or 40 million? Since the RINO flip is twice important, then a dems majority should be worth mmmm $80 million? We can't really say until it goes up for auction. Then in 15 months Nov 2012 we give it back to repubs, then we start the recalls all over again!

Gov. Walker has retained the silent majority. Despite millions of dollars in out of state money from entities like AFL-CIO ($5M ) and AFSME ($3M) that sponsored We are Wisconsin (spending $12M+), the left failed to change the course of Walker’s balanced budget and jobs agenda. The Democrats by contrast, had three State Senators that fled to Illinois recalled. The remaining fleeing Democrats (including Cullen) in the legislature know what this means for their own prospects when their first year is up on Jan 1st.
.
It's all well and good to spin this as just the numbers of elections won, but the fact is the Republican caucus remains the majority. With taxpaying, working class Independent and GOP voters empowered by this result, it will be much more difficult for the extreme, anti-Wisconsin agenda of big unions to continue their disruptions and vitriol. At the same time, members of the Assembly and others in the Senate who voted against the Governor’s balanced budget, voted against job creating bills, and voted against personal rights such as concealed carry (Cullen again) are becoming increasingly vulnerable, especially with redistricting. Thus far, the fiscal conservative, small business minded GOP retains control of the state lawmaking process.

Scooter has lost his working majority. Despite millions of dollars in out of state money from entities like the Koch brothers sponsored Americans for Prosperity, the right failed to eliminate a single Senator of the three -- only three! -- they were able to recall. The Democrats, by contrast, were able to put six Republican Senators into recalls and knock two of them off while coming very close to a third. The remaining Republicans in the legislature know what this means for their own prospects.
.
It's all well and good to spin this as just the numbers of elections won, but the fact is the Republican caucus is two seats smaller than it was and the Democratic caucus is two seats larger. With moderates empowered by this result, it will be much more difficult for the extreme, anti-Wisconsin agenda of Governor Walker to advance further. At the same time, members of the Assembly and others in the Senate who were ineligible for recall will now have to consider what might happen to them in January when their exclusion expires and the citizens can call them back to the polls. Thus far, the GOP only has a 66% record of protecting them.

Please explain to me how giving money to road builders and taking it from teachers benifits me becasue the end result of that is that my state taxes remain the same and my local taxes go up. Overall higher taxes.

wonders -- the teachers and other public employees did not create the financial crisis.
.

I have sent this idea to all my state and federal elected leaders: close tax loopholes (including offshore or out of country and out of state fake headquarters to avoid taxes) and make sure that the larger corporations who can afford to pay legal staff to avoid their fair share are no longer allowed to skip out. After-all, they enjoy the benefits of living in a relatively safe country with a high standard of products and services available supported by the infra-structure of roads, utilities, FDA insured banks, etc. When their products or places of business are threatened -- they expect the police or US military to protect them because they are from the USA. . . . Whew, I made myself tired . . .

My point is, when the unemployment rate of our nation drops to 3%, then, some tax breaks could be restored to the top 1% and large corporations. Until then, "share the pain" of the average working citizens who are being asked to repair the problems.
~~~~
There is some reality in saying that we Americans over-spent our personal budgets -- buying houses beyond our means and extending our credit card debt. We wanted the "best buy" and failed to own up to the fact that we were killing American jobs when we bought cheaper foreign made products. However, that said, most of us did/do not have the power to make possible the crisis being faced in WI, the nation and the globe.
peb1127--speaking of costing the taxpayers money -- how much did the six primaries in these recall elections cost the state? There was no attempt to hide that they were running fake democrats just to buy time for the GOP to organize their campaigns. The so-called damage to the Capital was WAY over inflated -- how about the Gov. having to double his bodyguard because he is so afraid of retaliation against his extreme policies? (pretty ironic sense lefties are known to be anti- guns and violence) That is costing the taxpayers, too. Please get back with numbers to support your rhetoric, it is tiresome.
The problem I see is that the two sides are so far apart in ideology that there will never be a middle ground. The reality is that since the 1980's the split has grown between fiscal conservatives and the far left. The divide has been created by extreme positions on both sides increasing the separation. I do not believe that you can see the middle from either side.
When has a democrat ever come up with a real idea that didn't involve spending more money?
Even potus....says he will have a plan....but not until September.
Maybe if Obama sequesters himself in that bus that was made in Canada, he can come up with a real plan.
The fake bus tour (campaign tour)...the only thing missing in the background was a Holstein (black and white, of course).
I can't wait to see the total cost of that sham.
I think the nearly equal party distribution in the State Senate is a healthy thing. Hopefully they will be able to deal with things in an evenhanded way since no one party can easily roll right over the other. Many of those elected to the legislature would prefer not to tow the "party line" on every issue. I think there are more good, independent-minded lawmakers than the media makes it appear. Could we please stop making every single topic into a democrat versus republican issue?
and here we are talking about winning and losing, are all a bunch of Charlie Sheen clones? Nobody has "won" anything.
--
I'm all for Teachers and every other public employee paying more for their benefits and retirement.
---
I think they should be able to unionize and represent themselves thru a union like any other worker.
----
I think standardized tests andn performance based pay is a bad road to take.
---
I'd like more local control to a point. Elect the board you like and employee the teachers that are doing their jobs. I really don't know how to "test" performance in a way that will do any good in the long term.
----
education is a long term process and cant' be tested on a standardized test. Looking back, my class was pretty successful. Some of us, like me didn't get good grades, we rocked standardized tests and did well in college and beyond. I know those that had excellent grades, didn't do well on standardized tests and did well after high school and college, and I know everything in between, so where's the answer? I really dont't know.
==
if a teacher is in class, engaging the class, pushing the class and teaching in and outside the box and is doing their job, they should keep their jobs. If they're doing things a teacher shouldn't be doing, then bye, bye. I don't want standardized tests and "performance" based pay. Short term I think it works to a degree, long term,I think it will just breed cheating, lying and finding ways to fool the system rather than teach the kids.
You know I read these blogs and I post on occasion, all I see is bipartisan politics. JUST LIKE AT THE CAPITOL. I don’t see anyone, or very few come up with any answers or even compromise. WHERE DO YOU THINK IT STARTS?
Here is my idea of the day, you can’t post unless you have at least one alternative to an issue. Lest see who can really put up or shut up.
Here is my first one, let the teachers keep collective bargaining if they agree to a few conciliations
1. They have to pay for all of their own retirement like most of the private sector does
2. They must agree to pay raises based ONLY on performance; the 90% kids in the class MUST pass the standard tests given.
3. NOTHING is graded on a “curve”.
How about we start there and see where this goes.
I'd say 3-1 isn't to shabby. Now when the big war comes up in 2012 you won't have the consentration completely on Wisconsin and the US is angry at Obama with 39% approval rating.
