Wis. governor, others mull massive tree cleanup
SIREN, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is meeting with state emergency officials and local leaders in far northwestern Wisconsin to figure out how to salvage hundreds of thousands of down trees.
Powerful July storms toppled trees over more than 130,000 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Polk and Washburn counties. Local governments have pushed most of the debris off roads, but rights of way are littered with tangled branches, limbs and tree trunks.
Emergency workers are concerned that the debris could become a serious fire hazard this fall and block snow removal in winter.
Forest product companies fear the timber will rot before they can use it to make paper and lumber.
Walker toured the area by helicopter Friday morning. He is meeting with local foresters and government officials throughout the day.

WAHOO_35 Regarding having the"laid off teachers" do the clean up. I was hoping instead that one of those KOCH busses that drive the ignorant Tea Party puppets city to city with their racist picket signs would do the work. (The forum found it refreshing that you stated your 35 IQ in your name.)

We are fortunate to have an intelligent (ROFLMAO) governor that knows what trees look like and he will use his scout bacground to figure this one out. Kind of like how he figured the employment gains for last month-->Yep he took credit for the usual summer surge in jobs, but this month it is a federal problem. Thank you Guv duh Walker for your duh help with another major decision.

If it rots,do the Kochs get a big tax break?
I'm sure Walker will sign a few dollars away on that one.

I think Scooter should worry a bit more about the 8,000 jobs lost in Wisconsin in July than about trees. Where are all of those jobs you were going to create in the badger state Scoots?

The left is continually bashed when they give their comments. But when the right trashes others and calls them names, it seems to be okay.

Who owns the property that the downed trees are on? Is it state land, fed. land, private land...Whoever is responsible should be responsible and clean it up or let it be. End of story.

Wonders, welcome to the realm of the JNSVL commenters. If there is nothing to complain about, those on the Left will find a way to jump on the Gov. the Tea Party or anybody that disagrees with them. If people on the Right question, oh my! They add nothing in the way of solutions except tax the rich, tax the rich and tax the rich. Your comment was refreshing.

My cousin was in charge of a Forestry office back in the 70s when something like this occurred. 100,000 acres of downed trees. So they decided to find out what it was like to fight a fire in this situation. Bulldozers put fire lines around 5-10 acres, and they set it on fire. The fire jumped the lines and all 100,000 acres burned. I refer to my cousin as "The Arsonist" now lol

There are plenty of uses for the wood ,the key is to find someone to clean it up cheap, and put it to use either, pellets, mulch for playgrounds, free wood at the local campgrounds, whatever. In my opinion they could take the local prisoners out and let them do it ! Let them earn their 3 hots and a cot. I'm sure they would like to get out and work.

Again, when I read this all I see is a bunch bitching and complaining instead of answers. Some complain Walker did a flyover. He is the Governor; of COURSE he is going to look at the damage.
Again, instead of bitching about what someone says or do how about a couple of REAL solutions.
To me it sounds like the wood is not much good for anything except burning, to give it away sounds like a good plan but just how much is there? How about contacting a couple of companies that make the wood pellets for stoves and tell them here is wood, make it into sawdust and make pellets from it?
I don’t know if that is a good solution but it is better than bitching all the time with NO ONE doing anything to help the issue.

grandy.....2+2 must equal 5 in your right wing math mind. Where did my comments infer anything negative regarding injuries and deaths? You have been listening to Rush and the other jugheads so long that you too are adopting their new math. I'll try to simplify things more next time.

wow wahoo...nothing better to do but bash teachers eh? Story wasn't even about them and yet you seem to find it in your heart to continue to do so. Must have been a bad experience for you to go to school everyday. Maybe you went at the same school Walker did eh? He didn't like it either.

I was up in Bayfield Co. the day after these storms ripped through and it was a mess . Most of the trees will rot because there no way to get at them unless you cut to get to em' .

I would suppose the reason they can't give it to anyone is they don't want to spread the emerald ash borer.
