Governor plans 'fireside chat' with state
MADISON — Gov. Scott Walker says he plans a live "fireside chat" with Wisconsin residents on Tuesday night.
In the 6 p.m. speech, Walker said, he will discuss the state’s budget challenges, "divisions that have arisen over the past week" and his vision for moving forward.
Tens of thousands of protesters have marched on the Capitol for seven straight days to protest Walker’s plans to strip public employees of most collective bargaining rights. Walker said the plan is needed to help balance the state’s budget, which faces a $3.6 billion shortfall by mid-2013.
Opponents say Walker's true goal is to bust up the public employee unions that represent about 175,000 workers in state and local government, including schoolteachers.

The president should show leadership and ask the runaways to return to their state follow the will of the majority of the voters.

wislady - If your job screws you over, do you stay? No, probably not. I'm not saying they are going to run to Detroit. If there are better opportunities in other places, why would you stay? What are they going to do to attract and retain long term workers in the future? If there is nothing to look forward to, then why would you come here? Scott Walker says Wisconsin is "open" for business, but for whom? His golf course buddies? Give me a break.

To other professions. Class sizes are going to increase and teachers will be laid off. Kids education will suffer. My child isn't even out of diapers and I am already looking at how I will home school him or pay for a private school. It's the race to the bottom! It's sad how many people don't really see what is going on. I suppose those are the people that still believe we belong in Iraq.

The rich are getting tax breaks and just pocketing the money. They are not reinvesting in workers or the economy which are the reasons the tax breaks are given. We need to focus on small businesses and companies that will keep the jobs here. Entitlement programs are going to be more of a drain on our society when everyone needs them because they don't have jobs!

Walker is no Roosevelt that's for sure! I do wonder how much money we could recover if the assembly members, senators and our governor took a salary cut? The cuts should start at the top and work their way down, not bottom up! I think some of you are very unappreciative of what the state workers do for you. They fix the roads you drive on, they educate (and sometimes babysit) your children. When all the good teachers leave Wisconsin (and they will) if this gets pushed through, what will you say then? Teachers are not paid rock star salaries and a lot of time have to pay for classroom items out of their own pockets. If someone did this to your private sector job you would be outraged.

Take collective bargaining out of it and look at the rest of the bill and it still stinks. It proposes allowing Walker to see state power plants to anyone he chooses. We all know who that will be - the Koch brothers. Allowing their empire to grow along with their power in the state. Giving all power to DHFS to make changes to Medicaid and Badgercare without any public input. These changes are not good.

The reality of the situation is this: Sign the bill and contribute your fair share or next week we will layoff 12K State workers.
It's as simple as that.
The state is broke and if the bill is not signed by Saturday. The government will not be able to refinance part of this debt.
By next week the fate of these workers will be decided by the union and by the Democracts.

The more I look into Walker's connections, it is frightening. The Koch brothers support the American's for Prosperity. Part of their belief is that there should be no minimum wage. What will help lower wages? Eliminate workers rights by busting their unions. They believe there should be no unions - public or private. This is just a plan to bring the wages down to help the rich get richer.

It's great political theater, but in most cases the tactic doesn't work for long.
"In most cases, breaking a quorum has resulted in a temporary victory but a longer-term defeat," said Steve Bickerstaff, a University of Texas adjunct law professor and author of "Lines in the Sand," about an incident in which more than 50 Texas Democratic legislators fled temporarily to Oklahoma, New Mexico and even Mexico in 2003.
I really doubt they will flee to Mexico though, they don't have the courage to go there.
