BTC won’t buy land
Blackhawk Technical College is backing away from a plan to buy 33 acres next door to its central campus in Rock Township.
BTC President Tom Eckert told the board Friday that he does not recommend buying the land, in light of Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed biennial budget.
The board concurred, Eckert said Monday.
“We just felt we should hang onto that money,” Eckert said. “At this point, we’re facing some pretty good cuts, and we just felt it wasn’t prudent at this time to go forward.”

One thing that should be noted is BTC and UW-Rock County are two entirely different colleges. One of the main differences is that the instructors in a technical college are required to have experience working in the field they are teaching. Universities only require "in theory". Tech colleges offer the "theory" and "in practice" components.
And Gov. Walker's bill is affecting us on SO many levels. I went in to the Criminal Justice field assuming that there would be job security. haha wrong again.

Yes those students in Janesville have all sorts of money for further education now.... and more educators to boot.

They already are using some of the space that was the Beloit Mall...Beloit Eclipse Center.
They already offer some classes in Monroe. Why not expand to Janesville... lots of empty buildings and a good share of students who reside in Janesville.

The part I left out: I commend BTC for waiting to see what the current fiscal impact of Walker's bill is before a purchase like this. Very unfortunate but good thinking.

I think it's a shame. I'm sure the current students would have appreciated some additional parking and i would like to think they would have added more classrooms & curriculum. There is an evident need for all of the above. As far as the EVAC course, that is a necessary tool for our local emergency services who currently have to go out of state (read, spend $ out of state) to receive this training. There was the potential for income generated but it looks like that won't happen, for now. Too bad, I really think the course would have been such good training for our emergency personnel!

My curiosity is on the topic of how much money BTC spent along with the Democratic Party of Rock County for the Party they threw at BTC for Obama winning his campaign. It was a nice chunk and they split the cost for the bill, however two things happened right after that.
1.) Tuition Fees went up
a.) They still make students pay for their debt even though not all students knew about the Party.
b.) BTC still has a loser come in annually that they charge 1,500 for 2 hours for lunch time entertainment.
2.) The real amount both groups spent was never released to the public nor was it released where the money came from to pay for it.
Go figure!! BTC got one over on Rock County Again. Wait isn't Barb Tillman the Rock County Undersheriff on that board? So according to this, she is sitting at BTC instead of doing her job at the Jail!! HUH!!!???!!!??? Seems fishy to me!!!!!!!!!!

I wondered if you knew how many jobs it would add. If it was a training course for emergency vehicles, my guess is it would be mostly pavement but I don't know. I wondered if you knew.

You really think they just plan on buying the land and leaving it sit empty? What about jobs created by construction of a building, teachers and local support for education.

Tetons, what is the number of jobs lost from not buying this land for emergency vehicle course training? I know of at least one other city that uses an airport for this type of training. With the amount of normal daily traffic at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport, I would think they could perform the training there?

cass was way off base, he statement is "I believe" is used twice and also states "same classes 5 miles up the road". How much more wrong can a person be? Read RetiredArmy's post. I see lots of difference between the two.

Tetons, be nice. At least Cass looked at the *course guide* before determining what BTC's needs are. That's all you need, right?

Cass: BTC Does NOT offer the same classes as UW-Rock County. Have you EVER been on their campus and see exactly what they offer. I worked there for 34 years and this argument always comes up for those that have never investigated the difference. Welding is Not offered at UW-Rock. Electric Power Distribution, Diesel Mechanics, etc are NOT offered at UW-Rock County. UW-rock County only offers a Liberal Arts degree and is a stepping stone for the 4 year UW system. Totally Different. BTC was not using the land to expand. It was going to use it for their Police Science Program for training.

I have no idea what BTC long term thinking was for buying this land, but thinking that at some point the need to expand will happen. Why wait when you have money for a down payment and intrest rates are still low.
Now,thanks to Walker the funds will get next to no return in the bank and when the time comes that the land is needed, it will cost more and loan rates will be high again.
You never want to spend money when it is not needed. But, sometimes a dollar spent today can save three tomorrow. If the need was there Walker just cost us all more in the future.

Beloit Turner High School wants to buy 40 acres for the cost of 4 + teachers. Where's the priority - Teachers or Land ? They think they need a new High School just because of the open enrollment students coming from the city. And the city is challenged due to the loss of aid. ( HS = $30 Million)

I think the city of Janesville should listen & follow by example the intelligence of the BTC, by looking forward to what you need: And can't afford, And just maybe saving the monies for a rainy day, that is now!
