Group says UW-Madison admissions favor minorities
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A conservative group says blacks and Hispanics are more likely to get admitted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison even though they have lower average test scores than whites and Asians.
The Virginia-based Center for Equal Opportunity is scheduled to release its analysis Tuesday. A Wisconsin State Journal report says the group opposes affirmative action.
UW-Madison officials have said they give preference to qualified students in certain minority groups to foster diversity. They say academic achievement shouldn't be the only factor in deciding who to admit.
The center analyzed undergraduate admissions data from 2007 to 2008. It found that UW-Madison admitted roughly 7 in 10 black applicants and 8 in 10 Hispanic applicants, compared to about 6 in 10 white and Asian applicants.

God I love the culture of victimization! "I'm more of a victim than you!" "No...I'M MORE OF A VICTIM!" It keeps all of them with their hands outstretched to the government to make them whole again. When only government can make you whole they have achieved what they were after. Servitude. Enjoy it.

as a white male I hope that they keep letting in more minorities. After all, in the next couple of years whites (and especially white males)will be the minority in America and then we can take the educational spots that should normally go to those that are better qualified. We can start getting scholarships that will ONLY go to white males and we can learn at all white colleges. fair is fair; right?
when whites are actually a minority does anybody actually believe that whites will benefit from reverse descriminiation? it will never happen.
What part of "two wrongs dont make a right" is so hard to understand? Institutionalized reverse descrimination is just as bad as hate based race descrimination.

The way I read it, the Republicans and you included just want to create diversions and split good people up with this type of garbage.
You soon flip the race card issue on this one, but we aint falling for it.

The whole announcement is flamebait. Here's what I found (albeit it's 5 years old). From http://apa.wisc.edu/Surveys/UnderSurvey0...
"1303 undergraduate students responded to the 2006 survey, including 311 minority students and 676 female students."
Wikipedia says: "According to the 2010 Census the state's population is: 83.3% Caucasian, 6.3% African American, 5.9% Hispanic, 2.3% Asian,1.0% Native American, and 1.8% of mixed race."

sarahb1-- you crack me up with your questions, the money comes from you as well as UW system, taxes. This is true for all colleges. They actually call it the equalization factor. The majority of the minorities play sports and the university get's full tuition reimbursement for this from the govt. Keep in mind-- it is all about the MONEY!!!

Has anyone ever been denied a job because of the color of their skin? I have. And I am white. (That's what they label me , but I am actually Irish American). Anyhow, back in the early 80's I was told by the human resources rep at Taylor Freezer in Rockton, Il, that even though I was the most qualified applicant they could not hire me at this time because they had to increase their minority employee numbers. Has anyone else experienced the same thing? I will be honest, it sucked. And at the time I really needed the job.

Grandys - I thought you may want to just drop this but I will reluctantly go back and do some cuts and pastes so others can see what was said if that is what you want. I am very happy that you do not support Jim Crow laws and have finally stated that. I am still troubled about the intend of ALEC's voter ID law template and the intent of your words supporting it, however.

Really I hardly see an issue. Lots of kids get into colleges for all sorts of reasons. Some because of who they know, some because of color, some because mom and dad have big bucks, and most get in because of hard work. Just like always.

I don't get too excited about the things that affect very little, like this.

Diversity! No problem with that, but if you can not cut the mustard, you should not go in front of the line just because of color,by doing so,aren't the ones allowing it to happen, keeping prejudice a live??
The white kids that deserve to be ahead of the line, will and do see this as a race thing, because of someone that is less qualified then they are to have a better education. There are all Black colleges,i think it's time to have all White colleges.
I would like to know how these Black colleges qualify admittance,do they put less qualified students ahead of their more qualified counter parts?

I think I have more problems with them admitting out of state (or out of country) applicants with lower test scores over state residents than I necessarily do over the ethnic disparities. These university systems are supported in part by my tax dollars, and if my 3.5 GPA child cannot get in because someone out of state with a 3.0 does, then I will be upset. The percentage of applicants of each ethnic group accepted depends on how many apply and what the range of their credentials may be, just as zdog states so succinctly.

i'm sure the number of white applicants blows away the number of any other groups applicants. The fact they have a lower percentage chosen is not surprising. When you throw lots of crap at the wall, lots of crap falls off.

"They say academic achievement shouldn't be the only factor in deciding who to admit."
Actually, that is very true and has been a policy at UW-Madison as long as I can remember. You can't just look at test scores. They base their admission decisions on many factors. Look at their application form. There's so much more there than test scores.
