STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association board votes Tuesday on whether to move the state boys and girls basketball tournaments from Madison to the Green Bay area beginning in 2013.

WLUK-TV reports the WIAA has been considering the move because the Kohl Center in Madison may have scheduling conflicts with Big Ten hockey. In February the organization said it would enter into a five-year agreement with the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon (ash-WAH'-beh-non) if the University of Wisconsin couldn't accommodate the tournaments.

The boys tournament has been held in Madison for 92 years. The girls tournament has been in Madison since it began in 1976.

The WIAA Board of Control is meeting in Stevens Point Tuesday afternoon.

First Madison is a heck of a trip for our northern Wisconsinites. Now it will be a heck of a trip for our southern Wisconsinites. Why has this venue not just placed in the center of the state? Maybe like uhm Stevens Point.

Kohl Center opened in 1998, Resch Center in 2002.

Tiredofhearingit: The WIAA hockey tournament has nothing to do with this story. The conflict is between the UW hockey team (Big Ten Hockey) and the WIAA high school basketball tournament.

yes it is newer than the Kohl Center, but smaller. WHich I think is ok. Rather have a packed facility than a big half empty one. The energy for state games needs that I think.
-
I agree the parking and ease for the spectators would be a welcome change. i think the facilities themselves are both very nice.
-
GB would be further for some, closer for others. i really don't think it's a big issue either way.
-
They play the baseball tournament in Appleton with no issues, Team state for wrestling has moved around from Stevens point, to near Milwaukee and to Madison. Girls basektball has moved a bit, but been in madison for a while now.
-
people are traveling for state no matter what usually, teams and spectators. MOST are in hotels, so another 2 hours for some isn't exactly a deal breaker. it's 2 hours shorter for others it's not like it's a transcontinental flight away.
-
the only thing that will take a hit, is history and tradition. people like to hold on to their traditions.

More to do in Green Bay than Madison huh? That is funny. Not sure how it is more "centrally" located as well? Yes for northern teams, but what about teams from the western part of the state? And many of those northern teams can get to Madison faster than Green Bay, as many times there is no direct route. I really thought you were kidding when I was reading that but I think you really are serious?!?!

I thought I read, the Big 10 tournament was going to a neutral site. This is about Madison not conceding costs and the new WIAA director trying to make a name for himself.

trust me it would be better to have it in Green Bay. More to do, less traffic and much newer facilities. Plus it is more centrally located for all of WI. I know many down here like it close to Madison, but for the small town teams from Northern WI, Green Bay is closer and it is only 2 hours from Madison.

Move it and move on.

We will but i have no idea about how many hours because it would be the first time hosting the Big Ten hockey tournament just not sure on the amount of hours or what the difference in hours will be between the two tournments. I just know the two sides should have done a better job to avoid this from happening.

jvldss - No they actually can't. The WIAA rules for Hockey are clear; their tournament must be played on home ice so in the event of a conflict (like this) the conflicting event must be the one to move.

I would think the University of Wisconsin would fight to keep that tournament in Madison as it annually exposes the University to thousands of kids and their families for two weekends a year. Can it be that difficult to schedule the Hockey team for away series on those two weekends?

WisconsinResident - if they move the high school basketball tournament, it's because of a conflict with the Big Ten hockey tournament. So won't you still get the hours working for the hockey tournament?

If this happens it will screw people I work with at the Kohl Center who work to clean and maintain the Kohl Center who depend on those extra hours as part of our income. That is 30 extra hours we get with the two tournaments it is sad to think that the people I work with may lose the hours all because the two sides may not reach some kind of agreement. In my opinion I think it ******.
