Humane society took in fewer animals in 2011

The number of animals coming into the Rock County Humane Society declined slightly in 2011, a humane society official says.

The drop can in part be attributed to contracts with local municipalities that push the responsibility of animal control back to those municipalities, Executive Director Angela Rhodes said.

The shelter in 2012 will continue to stand by those contracts and educate the community on the difference between shelter services and animal control services, she said.

By all means go there and adopt.
Don't let my experience deter you.
Go and see for yourself.
Maybe things have changed or maybe it was just a bad day.

I adopted from the RCHS and had an awsome experience. I thought that everyone there was wonderful. Don't let posts on a message board deter you. If you want to adopt go there and find out for yourself what the experience is like. If they're rude, walk out the door.

I agree that they are very rude. The first time I went there with intentions of adopting, was basically talked out of it. I went home to think about it, called back an hour later and the dog was magically adopted. I went a couple months later and ended up adopting a dog. The whole experience was awful. I first was grilled about why I was there and what dog I was interested in. When I told them, I was rudely asked if I knew anything about the breed. When I responded that I currently own a dog that is that breed, the whole mood changed. I was then treated nicely and they brought the dog out for me to meet. If it wasn't for the animals, I too would have went elsewhere.

Am I the only one that thinks shelter services and animal control services go hand in hand. I think RCHS is just trying to justify pricing themselves out of business. They won't take a stray if you bring it in. They are often rude. Maybe they spend to much time getting into the catnip

farm houses along major rodes find stray cats all the time. People don't want to put up with the agravation that comes from the society so they just dump them off by a farm and leave. I know I have strange cats all the time on my door step. Question, what should we do with them? I don't feed them as there are plenty of mise in the fields.

Adopting a cat from the RCHS was a horrible experience.
The staff members were rude to the point of being insulting.
At one point in the process
two staff members had a very loud and nasty argument
right in front of us
with one storming out of the room.
If it had not been for the poor cat,
we would have left.
I will never go back there or support them again.

you know...if people would just take of their animals from the beginning (spay & neuter for example) and stop letting them run loose for everyone else to take care of maybe these problems wouldn't exist...don't blame the humane society!

That's how it is ( or was the last time I was there ) at the Jefferson County location also. Back in the eighties you could go in and be put in a cage FILLED with cats and kittens and play with them all until you managed ( tearfully ) to choose only one to bring home. Ten years later, I go back and there were about ten cats. I was very disappointed and ended up going to Touched By A Paw. It would have made me happy, of course, if things had gotten to the point that that was truly all the cats available, but we all know that not to be the case.

I agree with the comment above theyre the rudest people.ive been in there when people bring animals in there.they find every reason in the world not to take the poor animal.the reason they have less animals is due to the fact they wont accept them.when a person takes a stray in there, they actually try to make you keep it and take responsibility for it!so,when someone takes an animal in there, and they refuse to take it,just set it down and walk out.the humane society used to be my charity, but not anymore.because they continual refuse animals.but they will take them if it gets them in the paper.lol useless people

I was in there about a month ago. They had NINE...yes NINE cats. I remembered the glassed-in sections that was filled with cages. I couldnt imagine what had happened to them--and asked. I was taken back by the rudeness of the staff--and by the fact that I was told that ALL those cats that I had seen the last time I was in, were adopted out. There is NO way that that could have happened. I used to work there!
They "cleaned house"!
I know thats what happened! Makes me sick.
Im sure that the Humane Society took in less animals in 2011!!Thats NOT what they do anymore. Legal "red tape" gets in the way. " The shelter in 2012 will continue to stand by those contracts and educate the community on the difference between shelter services and animal control services".... oh yea, that really helps the animal running loose and terrified in the middle of a winter storm, or in the middle of a busy intersection. Yes, at times like those, let the animal go, so that you can "educate".
Lets not hide anything here, the Humane Society of Rock Co is no longer about helping animals. Its about proving a point...its about MONEY. Wonder what they do with all the fundraiser money they make? It USED to be put directly towards the animals.
They only had 9 cats the day I was there. I went home that night, and there happened to be an article in the paper about the "overcrowding" problem. Yea. Not the Humane Society I saw.
