Lawsuit seeks to stop Wis. wolf hunt
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A coalition is suing the Department of Natural Resources to try to stop Wisconsin’s planned wolf hunt.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports a group of humane societies filed the lawsuit Wednesday in Dane County Circuit Court.
The lawsuit claims the DNR failed to put in place regulations to prevent the inhumane deaths of hunting dogs in confrontations with wolves.
The five-month wolf hunt is scheduled to begin Oct. 15. It is the only such hunt in the nation in which hunters would be allowed to use dogs.
The lawsuit seeks an injunction to halt the hunt until the DNR establishes reasonable restrictions on the use of dogs.
A DNR spokesman says the agency is disappointed to hear of the lawsuit but had not had a chance to review it.

zdog, I certainly hope the "not a hunter" and "lazy SOB" were not pointed at me because I can assure you that is false. Dogs have been bred and trained to do this type of "work" for years and are damn good at it AND crave it. You can keep your poodle in the house where its all warm and cozy. I will walk 5 miles and chase my dogs into the bear woods ,where things can get rather sketchy, thank you very much. And yes I am also one of those guys in the truck on the side of the road searching for coyotes. Please have some intimate knowledge about something before you spout off next time.

Those are "wolves" Rick_Raff, not "wolfs". It's a plural thing, quite complex.

Do you really expect a dog that has mainly been bred for show and companionship for about the last century to really be able to tackle wolves?
.
Quote from Wikipedia on the subject:
"Several wolfhounds were killed in wolf hunts in the warden sponsored Wisconsin Conservation Department of the 1930s. These losses induced the state to begin a dog insurance policy in order to reimburse wolf hunters."
.
Here's what Theodore Roosevelt had to say about hunting wolves...and I think he knew what he was talking about.
"A wolf is a terrible fighter. He will decimate a pack of hounds by rabid snaps with his giant jaws while suffering little damage himself; nor are the ordinary big dogs, supposed to be fighting dogs, able to tackle him without special training. I have known one wolf to kill a bulldog which had rushed at it with a single snap, while another which had entered the yard of a Montana ranch house slew in quick succession both of the large mastiffs by which it was assailed. The immense agility and ferocity of the wild beast, the terrible snap of his long-toothed jaws, and the admirable training in which he always is, give him a great advantage..."
.
Wolf hunting in previous decades was done with large packs of dogs and many horsemen to assist them with the kill. I sincerely doubt there are going to be many people in Wisconsin with dogs well-trained for hunting wolves, no matter what the breed, along with organized parties of hunters to arrive on the scene in a timely fashion to assist them.
.
Another quote describes the modern day version of the breed:
"The Wolfhound of today is far from the one that struck fear into the hearts of the Ancient Romans. An easygoing animal, Irish Wolfhounds are quiet by nature...often favored for their loyalty, affection, patience and devotion."
.
Maybe someone from the DNR needs to visit with those bear hunters who had their dogs killed by wolves and then think about their decision to make Wisconsin the only state that sanctions wolf hunting to also allow dogs to be used.

Has anyone heard of a wolfhound? Several breeds claimed to have been bred as early as 7000 bc specifically for wolves. Do you really expect people to use a Poodle? Learn before you whine, after you know what you are talking about than chime in with opinions.

hdonly: When you refer to "a group of...morons", you must mean the DNR, right?
.
Oreally: I wondered the same thing about putting domesticated dogs in a situation of facing wolves...or bear, for that matter, even if the bear is likely to be treed, still doesn't really compute to me.
.
This hunt scheme sounds like something some of Michael Vick's old dog-fighting buddies dreamed up while smokin' some crack after one of their meets. Oh, and the bear hunters who were crying about their dogs getting killed in the program I saw on PBS referred to their dogs as "one of the family". Really?
.
intrigued & wasp: Thank-you for a couple of reasonable and experienced comments amongst the others. :-)

Also known as Bigglersville stew. Folks who turn up their noses at it have absolutely no business in the woods with a gun.

A wolf can easily snap a dog's spine. What sort of dog owner would subject his pet to this kind of death?

would it be better to leave the wolves alone to naturally reduce the large deer population in Wisconsin? Have you ever hit an 8 pt buck with a car? Not pretty.

The level of discourse on this subject is almost unbelievable. When you point out the lack of logic in some arguments and use a little sarcasm, and even label it a such they don't recognize it. I grew up on a farm, I know all about killing animals for food and the necessity of putting animals down. I was out hunting along with my dad, grandfather and uncles when I was a little kid. Probably long before most of you were born. I hunted myself for many years starting at 12. Most of the people in my family including myself quit when the "he men" type hunters I see today started appearing in the field. Using tree stands, shooting over bait, radios atv's and weapons that belong on a battlefield , macho stuff. If any one thought by my first post I was seriously advocating hunting deer hunters, I would really have to question your thought processes. What I see in a lot of hunters today is a lot of testosterone and very little real knowledge. We used to eat what we killed, I am waiting to hear about the first wolf feed. By they way I could be wrong, but as of a few years ago there had never been a documented wolf attack on human in North America. But we certainly did have hunters dogs attack and injure and sometimes kill our farm animals.

I heard that dogs are dying during bear hunting season because the bears will run through a wolf pack's territory so the wolves kill the dogs and the bear runs free. If true, I never would have thought that bears could be so smart. Or maybe it just happens by accident. However, these next two items are facts: the wolves came back to WI on their own, they were not re-established here by human intervention. Two, wolves are the natural animal of the north woods, white-tail deer are not. The whitetail only moved north once the wolves were removed. And finally, this is not the most well thought out program. There has never been a new animal hunt approved and put in place as quickly as the wolf hunt has been (in Wisconsin).

One thing i've learned is money drives everything in this country. A petro company motivated by money isn't going to rely on some "liberals" to open up a new money stream for them. I'd bet their scientists, researchers and devlopment teams came up with the bags and promoted them all on their own.

Well of course they are, they have nothing better to do now do they ? If and when I get my permit and,IF I have a chance to harvest a wolf,I will gladly have it displayed in my man cave along with my other trophies.
If people think harvesting a wolf will be easy, they had better guess again. Hunting a supreme hunter is no easy task and ,the kill ratio will be very small.

look at all those people in MA that have died from shark attacks. The handful every decade is pure tragedy. I can't believe it has spiked the death rate in MA. :)

and somehow I have a feeling the petro companies were a much larger force behind the switch from paper to plastic. Seeing as their products are used to make plastic bags and would give them a new profit stream, but hey, don't let facts stand in the way.

wasp2491 - You could attempt to hunt deer hunters, but I wouldn't recommend it. That's unless you are really brave, not very smart or you would simply like to see a multi billion dollar revenue to an already starving state disappear.

zdog: Sounds like you have observed those folks who "hunt" coyotes, spending the majority of their time in their trucks sipping coffee, chatting on their radios, and obstructing traffic on narrow country roads.
.
Also, not long ago there was a program on WI Public Television about the growing wolf population and it featured bear hunters who where complaining about their dogs being killed by wolves. Seems ironic that they are out there hunting an animal and then cry foul when a wild animal preys on their tool of the hunt.
.
Got no problem with hunting, but then don't whine when nature takes it course.
.
And, another misleading headline, it would seem from content. Not the hunt itself being disputed, sounds like, just the use of dogs. Sounds reasonable.

I don't think they should be using dogs for bears or wolves. If you want to hunt them, get out and hunt them. Quit attaching radio collars on your dogs and turning them loose to run all day while you sit in a truck. you're not a hunter, you're a lazy SOB. If your dog dies, i feel badly for the dog, but hardly feel a thing but disgust for you.

Maybe the "wolf installers" are having second thoughts. The creator did not put them back here. On another note, dogs have been used to run black bears for years and very effective and cunning and have a great ability to stay away from danger. As soon as this state gets overrun with wolves because of all the bleeding hearts, one of their own dogs or even one of their small children might get picked off by these supreme predators and then there will be hell to pay.

Maybe we should hunt deer hunters, they kill a lot more deer than wolves. No, wolves are not cuddly, I have seen many of them also. THEY ARE WOLVES. They are doing what they were intended to do. Maybe the Creator made a mistake. Sarcasm intended.
