Barriers warn drivers near Ryan's house

JANESVILLE--It’s OK to drive near vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s Janesville home. But be aware that you could be “subject to search” if you enter the neighborhood, according to Secret Service signs posted Saturday near Ryan’s home in the Courthouse Hill neighborhood.

Secret Service agents placed the barricades at four intersections near Ryan’s home, which is at the intersection of St. Lawrence Avenue and Sinclair Street on Janesville’s near east side.

The barriers are on Harrison and Sinclair streets where they intersect Court Street, on St. Lawrence Avenue at Jackman Street and on Sinclair at Van Buren Street

*The barriers between Paulie and the office he seeks are far greater than these.*

NVGraf, shouldn't you be in the Sinai getting ready for the big push to liberate "Palestine"?

I do not care what side of the fence you are on Politically, but some of you are not looking at the good that is coming from Paul Ryan being picked as VP. Before all of this, Janesville was just a blip on a map, now Janesville is on the National map. Reporters from all over the Country have been coming to Janesville to do reports, interviews and getting to know Paul Ryan's hometown. These people and their staff are spending much needed money on Lodging, Food as well as Shopping, which is boosting Janesville's economy. I do not care what side of the fence you sit on politically, but Ryan being the VP Pick is bringing much needed revenue into this city. So the next time you want to cut Paul Ryan off at the knee's, think about the good it is bringing to a little blip on the map.

Wow, some of you need to take a chill pill. It is NORMAL AND CUSTOMARY according to Federal Law for our Presidential Candidate as well as the Vice Presidential pick to have Secret Service protection. If you don't like the barriers in place to protect Paul Ryan's Family from nut jobs, then find another Street to go down.

Sheesh, some peoples children will find anything to complain about.

I felt it was needed to post here because some people were lumping all liberals together. I would like to say I am a Democrat and I have been working with the OFA office. I understand, and respect that the Secret Service has put in place. I went through the same thing when Obama was running and had to be vetted and fully obliged because I was worried about his safety. I am not a Ryan fan and will not vote for him, but in this day and age we should be respectful of Mr. Ryan his family and his family's safety. I have also advised the OFA campaign to be respectful and not to canvass in that neighborhood out of respect to both the secret service, as well as the Ryan family. While we may disagree on policy, those in charge are showing respect, and I am proud of the people I work with who are doing so.

Please note that the signage makes any search a "consent search", which is not subject to the same sorts of rules for criminal search based on suspicion. This is similar to the search you consent to by the TSA when boarding a plane, for example, or entering the secure portion of the Rock County Courthouse just a couple of blocks from Ryan's home. There is no need for "reasonableness" in a consent search, at least under current case law.

One question: Have any of you who are complaining ever had need to drive or walk on this miniscule part of our fair city?

There are hundreds of miles of roads and sidewalks that are still 100% free, even by your standards. Please utilize them at will, smile, breathe deep and enjoy the sunshine.

regularperson, once again read what NVgrf said... read the healthcare bill. You don't have to take your employers insurance. Each state, each democrat run state anyways, will set up an insurance exchange for you to shop around and find the best policy for you that fits your budget.
Besides, the smoking in the bars issue isn't about trying to stop people from smoking it's to protect people from the dangers of second-hand smoking. And don't give me that business of "...if they don't like it then don't work there..." line. Some just don't have any other option.

The barriers are up, you can choose to drive by Ryan's house and rubberneck and possibly consent to a search. OR you can just ignore and avoid that block just like every other day of your entire existence of living in Janesville.

Nv its pretty sad that i will get a fine if i don't take my companies health care cause it costs to much but yet i will get fined if i don't have health care.... Not that this has anything to do with this but look at the smoking ban they put on all bar owners if they want to have smoking within their establishment they should be able to have it yes they might loose business but it is their place of business who is to say the state government can dictate what goes on in someone else's business that they built with their money just sayin the government is slowly taking away all of our rights and you will see it sooner than later just letting ya know

Ryan is running for an important position right now, one that I'm sure none of us qualify for, and while it may be a pain in the arse for us, the barricades are no worse than other issues around good old Janesville. Also the fact that he is running for VP leads us to think it might not be a bad idea to have a little extra protection. While I do not agree with his political ideas, I won't fault him for wanting to keep his family safe. I think anyone with any common sense can see that, but as the saying goes "can't fix stupid"

Kawi....I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, but it is a sign of the times. There appears to be individuals willing to do the dramatic to get their 15 minutes of fame, so there does need to be some type of security and perimeter setup for this unique situation. When I travel to Lambeau Field for Packers games I am searched upon entry. If I fly out of O'Hare airport, I am subject to a search, and with no easonable articulable suspicion. As for the illegal search and seizure, I believe that is limited to your private property.

This has nothing to do with partisanship. This has to do with encroachment upon personal freedom, rights, and liberty. Just because Paul Ryan happens to be my neighbor doesn't mean I should lose my right to be protected against unreasonable and illegal search and seizure every time I enter or leave my neighborhood. If it's about Mr Ryan's security they can erect a fence around HIS property and secure it. The government doesn't just get to go around suspending the constitution in select places. I find it despicable that you people are agreeable to losing your personal rights and freedoms in the name of some false sense of security. It is a sad state that this country is headed in. To our founding fathers no encroachment upon personal rights and freedom were acceptable. I'm glad you all feel so comfortable that the "govt is your friend and knows whats best for you".

CARLITOSWAY - Regarding Your Comments On -- WISLADY - "Do you get paid to post ignorant things against everyone that is not of your political party....." Your comments are so very true! I agree with what you are saying and where you are coming from politically. USARET - I know the comment was not for me, but I would not support Ryan even if he was a Dem. Also - do not support Romney - find it very hard to vote for someone that is a Mormon. The Mormon faith is a cult and I find it quite disturbing to see Evangelical Republicans supporting a cult member for President.

Ryan having protection in home town WHY? Must be some of his Ideas that he himself knows, are not right..... Wislady A JOB IS A JOB do you get paid to post ignorant things against everyone that is not of your political party? Why don't people just accept that at this Time OBAMA is president and if the parties could work together to better AMERICA instead of trying to destroy it Maybe things would change. THE GOP THEMSELVES HAVE SAID THEY WILL MAKE HIM A ONE TERM PRESIDENT WHEN HE WAS ELECTED. WE DEALT WITH BUSHWACKER FOR 8 YEARS AND HE TOOK US TO A DEPTH THAT WILL TAKE TEN TERMS FOR ANY PRESIDENT TO GET US TO A HINT of DAYLIGHT. To all the GOP followers, to want another GOP president will just put AMERICA so deep in the red that daylight will never be seen. Instead of Smear campaigns, please enlighten us with what the country wants to hear, JOBS, Economic Options to bring us out of the hole we are in. We do not want to hear the lies and HATE that is being spit from the people that have no care for the HUMANS of this country, they want the Wealth and health for only the rich and send the reat of the country into a third world. To take rights and destroy anything and everything that would be fair for all. The platform is not acceptable as to high taxes to the middle and none for the rich and absolute hate for people in poverty and women. If you think this is the right choice GOD HELP YOU. Obama is the best choice at least he shows heart and reality to some of the people who do matter and to want taxes fair across the board and the rights of the people to not be taken away, and to make health care affordable, are not a bad IDEAS, NUF SAID.....

Ryan has nothing to do with this, it would be the same protection if Rubio was a VP candidate or when Biden was a candidate 4 years ago, why you are making it personal against ryan just shows how insane some people are. Read the article! You can drive past his house all you want. You can walk along the sidewalk in front of his house all you want. BUT, if the secret service deems you may be a threat you may be searched along with your belongings (i.e. purse, backpack, car, etc...) You don't have to go through that area. They are just making it easier for them and easier for you so you are aware of what is happening.

A better way to put what I said in my comment is: No street or public walk way should be blocked off to the Janesville public. It is okay to guard Ryans house. Anywhere Ryan or his family is going should be announced that there will Secret Service there. We as Americans should be able to decide if we want to take the chance for our families or ourselves to be where he is and take the chance our families may be caught in the middle of a crisis.

First this America. Everyone has different opinions. Being able to stand up for your beliefs is what America is all about. Being dictators who don't want others to stand up for their rights and protest is not what
America is about. Being able to deliver my Avon to customers in that area without being stopped like a common criminal is not American. Guns in restaurants, gas stations, churches, has never been a part of Janesville. The Ryans are no different than any other American Citizen, and if he wants to be Vice President, he needs to accept the fact that no matter what we do or where we go, we take chances.

So because someone lives in the neighborhood or travels through it they could be "subject to search" going to their home? Sounds like an egregious attack on liberty. For a law officer to stop and search me they need reasonable articulable suspicion. Simply exercising your right to be free and move about where you please is NOT RAS for search. Terry stops allow frisk, but there still must be RAS that a crime was or is about to be committed and search is not allowed, only a frisk.
