MADISON—State wildlife officials are planning to hold an online chat about cougars.
Department of Natural Resources carnivore ecologist Adrian Wydeven and assistant carnivore biologist Jane Wiedenhoeft will host the chat beginning at noon on Wednesday.

Participants can join the chat by visiting the DNR’s website and searching for the phrase “ask the experts.”

Researchers say more cougars are leaving dense populations in western states and moving into the Midwest. Cougars are known to be largely secretive and mostly keep to riverbanks and wooded areas, usually avoiding humans and feeding on deer, turkeys and raccoons.

The comment was made mostly in jest. I was just struck by the words "mostly" and "usually". Seems modern life has become full of conditional statements. Note my use of the word "mostly".

I agree they do not seek human contact the one that was sighted in Wisconsin a couple of years ago was about 3/4 of a mile from my home and had been living in an abandoned barn my neighbor followed tracks into the barn and it jumped out the window. I believe that was the same one shot in the Chicago area about a week later it traveled a good long way only being seen twice to my understanding.

Wildlife experts will tell you, Maynard, that animals are at the highest risk when they stray into unfamiliar areas such as cities. I don't think the cougar was looking for human contact, quite the opposite -- it was lost, hungry, and scared. Additionally, it was in a backyard, not in a store. Cougar attacks are really very rare -- most recently fewer than one every three years.

"mostly" and "usually" . Too bad that one that ended up killed in the food store in the Chicago area did not know he wasn't supposed to be there. AP must have their lawyers proof reading for them now.
