JANESVILLE—Janesville police arrested a Janesville man for his eighth drunk driving offense after he briefly tried to outrun police in Janesville early today.

According to police reports, a Janesville police officer observed a red Chevrolet Beretta driven by Peter C. Smith, 29, Janesville, fail to stop at a red light at East Centerway Street and North Parker Drive.

An officer pulled over the vehicle and noticed Smith had alcohol on his breath and slurred speech, according to reports. When the officer brought in backup and attempted to give Smith a field sobriety test, Smith sped away at speeds up to 50 miles per hour, according to reports.

Police reported that Smith pulled over several blocks away on Harding Street just North of Hyatt Street.

Police arrested Smith for eighth offense operating while intoxicated and felony fleeing an officer. His blood alcohol tested at .15—twice the legal limit for driving, according to reports.

Smith was being held at the Rock County Jail today.
