Judge hearing arguments over night deer hunting
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge is hearing arguments over whether the Wisconsin Chippewa can hunt deer at night.
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb two weeks ago declared the state’s ban on night deer hunting extends to tribal hunters, scuttling the Chippewa’s request until Wednesday’s hearing.
The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, the organization that oversees the Chippewa’s off-reservation rights, last month quietly authorized tribal hunters to hunt at night, known as shining.
The OK was given for night hunting in the so-called ceded territory, a 22,400-acre swath of northern Wisconsin the tribes handed over to the federal government in the 19th century.
The state Department of Natural Resources has banned night deer hunting for decades out of safety concerns.
The judge didn’t indicate during Wednesday’s hearing when she would rule.

I have no problem with Indians, (and yes I call them that respectfully) and often comment on illegal immigration by saying "Ask the Indians what they think of illegal immigration"
Now having said that, this night hunting thing is a crock, as I posted earlier...just like the misuse of your "Treaties" allowing tribes to buy land anywhere they want, then declare it a reservation and build a casino and pay NO TAXES on it...
Call this stuff what you want, but it is just plain wrong.

Maybe we could just rescind the treaties and all the Caucasians could just get off the land that was stolen from the native Americans. Then there would be no problems at all.

It should actually be allowed because the deer move mostly at night. As long as we have rules and they don't good luck at controlling population. You better build massive walls around major roads or expect more accidents.

This is no different than the loopholes they used to slaughter the fish the way they do...
Not a good thing.

They claim this is how they did it 100 years ago? Pretty sure they didnt have high powered rifles, radios, spotlights and pickups!
Make them do it with a homemade recurve and gut string.

Don't hunters accidentally already kill each other way too many times in daylight hours? Which “herd” are you trying to thin? JMO, this is just plain too dangerous

You call this poaching in most cases, unless of course you are part of the tribe.
As far as shining yes it would make it very easy to poach a deer, but when you have snow there is no light needed.
This needs to be stopped.
Just recently 3 young men from Rock County were fined and lost their hunting rights for up to 21 years for doing exactly what is proposed. Hmmm !

I'm not a sportsman, but from what I understand, it is actually -easier- to hunt a deer at night, assuming shining is the method employed. Apparently, when you shine a deer, it freezes in it's tracks. I believe that implies even less skill is needed to hunt deer at night (if you are shining).
