Gov. Walker considers freezing UW System tuitions

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Monday, December 17, 2012 - 6:42 a.m.

MILWAUKEE—Gov. Scott Walker says he’s considering several options to keep tuitions affordable in the University of Wisconsin System.

A Wisconsin Public Radio report says the options include freezing tuition, capping the size of tuition hikes and raising state aid.
The governor’s comments came last week when he spoke at a voucher school in Milwaukee. A high school student asked about being able to afford college, and Walker said one key is to make sure tuitions don’t keep getting raised.
Walker says he still wants the UW System to grow and provide a full breadth of programs and courses. He says he’s working with UW officials on options.
The UW System has long argued that tuition hikes are necessary because state aid hasn’t kept pace with rising university costs.

old_badger, I went through the UW system and I had a few very good professors but to be honest I learned a hell of alot more on my own taking the initiative to utilize the campus and its facilities. The Profs have a pretty sweet deal I highly doubt there will be a mass exodus.

Eagle1 - Yes it sounds good to keep tution cost down but at what price to education. As good faculty leave because of lower salary compared to other Big Ten schools, the UW rankings will go down. Students will go to out of state schools for a better education (Minnesota). It will cheapen the degree of those who have obtained their degree from the UW as well. Fewer companies will want to locate in a state that doesn't have well educated work force. Thus the beginning of a downward spiral.
.
I agree it is better to keep tution down but the UW can't with the cuts it is getting from the state.

This story is about something good for UW students and the usual gang of fools has turned it into a competition of political stupidity, is anyone surprised?

Scott Walker's budget slashed $250 million in support for the UW system and made a 30% reduction in investments in the technical college system......Hmmm, short on funding??? Was this another game of "Kick the can down the road" by this Tea Party Republican........
Also...Walker's budget took power and authority away from local school boards and slashed nearly $1.6 billion in state aid to local public school districts, while increasing funding for schools run by private organizations, including for-profit corporations, like those favored by the conservative American Federation of Children. The American Federation of Children, run in Wisconsin by longtime Republican operative Scott Jensen, a colleague of Scott Walker's in the Legislature, spent nearly $820,000 on independent expenditures and phony issue ads in the 2010 fall elections. Scott Walker himself was the recipient of $70,000 in direct contributions from so-called "choice" advocates. [WI Act 10, Wisconsin Democracy Campaign]

I would also like to point out that any attempt to downgrade the UW system through tuition freezes and funding cuts will have a TREEMENDOUS negative effect on the state's economy. Think about how many small businesses in small towns rely on the colleges. This anti-education move by Walker and all of the baffoons that follow him lockstep will result in job losses statewide.
Going to college is a choice that each individual makes based on their own life. It is certainly reachable by every single individual one way or the other. Is debt tough to overcome? Absolutely!! So goes life. The thousands in early debt will be overcome by a lifetime of higher earnings. Are higher earnings a guarantee? NO!! But your chances of achieving any type of success career wise in this country increase greatly when educate. Don't be fooled by the likes of Shrek and Wislady, who were fortunate enough to grow up in the "old days" where you could work hard and get ahead. Those days are no more. The only way to get ahead now? Work hard in school, find apassion and be the best at it! Those goalsd are almost exclusively achieved through educating yourself.

So let me get this straight, Winklady thinks you're not guaranteed to be "smart" when aquiring a degree from a higher learning institution? Maybe not as "smart" as you are, however your lifetime earnings are on average significantly higher when you attend and complete college. That is another idiotic statement in a long line of them from someone who OBVIOUSLY never attended college.
Walker is doing well without his degree yes, just goes to show you that you can get ahead in this world if you are willing to kiss butts and lie constantly. Scott Walker is a professional liar and a career politician. I hope he runs for president, he would humiliate not only himself , his supporters would finally see how ridiculously stupid the man is. He is a walking, talking rhetoric machine. Never had an original thought in his life. Is that successful?

"He is still holding a grudge on Universities because he never got his degree."

Jealousy on the left, just never ends. Walker seems to be doing fine without his degree. A degree does not come with a guarantee that the graduate is "smart". It only proves they made it through the courses.

This is just another Walker attempt to kill the UW System. He is still holding a grudge on Universities because he never got his degree.
.
The reason that tution must increase is the fact that Walker & Doyle took a ton of money out of the UW System. The tution increases don't even cover what was removed from the system.
.
You make mention that UW faculty are getting paid too much. While it seems like a high salary compared to what most of us make, it is actually approximately 18% LESS than other big 10 university faculty. That is the market the should be compared to, not what we make. We will lose faculty if we don't increase their salaries because they will go were the money is. If you know anything about Universities, Faculty will easily move. This will lower the ratings of the UW System and cheapen the degrees that many of us have obtained.
.
"Today, the annual impact of the UW System is estimated to be at least $15 billion, leveraging $1.1 billion in annual general purpose revenue (GPR) funding." – Kevin P. Reilly
.
Therefore, it only makes sense to invest and not cap the UW System.

Badgerlvr: Let us take a closer look at your sentence, "Some may try and "cram" their ideology down students throats, but most do not."
"Students throats" contains a plural possessive noun. You need to put an apostrophe after the second "s" in "students". Who needs the education? I'll match mine against yours any day of the week. If you are going to be critical of the grammar in this section, try and make every attempt to get your own correct before you do it. Otherwise you just come off looking like an idiot.......:)

Badger,
I did a quick search of UW system employees that make $100,000-$200,000 per year and came up with 2813 people. Most of these had the title of professor. It appears that you really didn't do any research, yet tried to pass off a lie as truth, while trying to belittle your opponent in order to give the impression that you are correct. A little bit of knowledge may help you see the truths in life.

Great! First - cut their revenue by reducing state aid. Next restrict their ability to raise new revenue through tuition. At that rate the system should fail in a couple years and we can privatize everything!!!

Badgerlvr, yes, I realized the sentence was very long, but I had to get going and get to work, so I left it to you to critique. I notice you didn't offer constructive criticism with an example of a better way to impart my thoughts. Jealous? Maybe. Frustrated is more like it. I am specifically talking about the ones who have been around so long they ARE making 6 figures. Obviously, it takes a while to work up to that. But when they make that kind of money AND don't have any teaching responsibilities, that is frustrating to me as a taxpayer who helps foot the bill for their salary and benefits. Even if they only taught one or two classes a week, I would be less frustrated. And Eagle makes the point more clearly than I did about the opinions - the problem is not that the instructor has or even voices his/her opinion; it's when the student won't parrot it and gets marked down that it is an issue.

JoyM: Do you realize you've just created the world's longest sentence? This (sentence) is also filled with half-truths. Though some professors may be making six figures, most do not. Some may try and "cram" their ideology down students throats, but most do not. Have you ever been to classes at U.W.? Do I detect a little jealousy here?

They also need to seriously look at the tenure system whereby any number (I don't know, who might?) of professors sit in their ivory towers contemplating the meaning of life and pulling down 6 figures while occasionally writing for an academic publication instead of actually teaching classes and contributing to the students' educations in some meaningful way which should not include trying to cram their own political leanings down the students' throats.

dado4, as someone that went through the UW system and acquired a chunk of debt and that was when college was much more affordable I would agree, they should be pushing for students to look at places like U-Rock as an option to keep costs down. I also agree why not try all three as option? Resident I agree as well like almost all government institutions working within a budget is generally something that isn;t a priority.

It should be a combo of all three. The best option is still attending one of the year school first such as UW-Rock.

" make sure tuition's don’t keep getting raised". Well if the University and its staff and teachers learn to work with in their budget lie the rest of us have to then a tuition hike would be unnecessary. Every year for the last 5 years tuition has gone up 5% for the last 5 years. So it's know wonder no one can afford to go to The University of Wisconsin. Let's see my student loans when i paid them off were just as much as what I paid for my house. So tell me how any family can afford that I barely made it income wise. I am still trying to figure it out because it was a strugle the whole time.
