JANESVILLE--Unused prescription drugs from the Rock County Jail soon will benefit low-income Rock County residents who don’t have health insurance.

The new program is a collaborative effort between HealthNet of Rock County, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and Advanced Correctional Healthcare, which provides health care management at the Rock County Jail.

The logistics of how unused medications will be collected from the jail have not yet been determined, said Ryan Messinger, clinical operations director at HealthNet.

“It’ll be great when it gets going,” he said. “The more donations we can get, the more patients we can serve.” Andi Brown, registered nurse and nursing supervisor at the Rock County Jail, said the jail would be sending 2,794 pills to HealthNet this month.

“These meds were compiled over a period of approximately two months,” she said.

Messinger said even if it’s only a few bottles every couple weeks, “any little bit helps.”

Connotation and interpretation: These medications aren't good enough for our inmates, because they are expired. So, here homeless and low income, you can have them. They are good enough for you. I'd say pass, thanks.

Inmates have to pay for their own meds. for 2 generic tylenol they are charged 4 dollars out of their account money. How do I know? I had a son there and seen his receipt. That was a few years back, they may charge more now. This is a good thing and the meds are not brought in by inmates. as the jail usually has doctors orders or pharmacies send the meds to the jails.

Are some or all of those medications from a stock which tax payers paid for? The department may cover costs of the privately ran health service's medications order-right? Health Net has some people who are in real need of help. There is also a few of them who are in and out of jail, who use their services. This is true. Will they benefit from these meds? How ironic if it is so! Why not though. Those medications would just go to waist anyway.
