YWCA announces new 24-hour text line
JANESVILLE—YWCA Rock County has unveiled a new 24-hour emergency text line so victims of abuse are never left alone.
The new safety line joins the YWCA’s current 24-hour HELP line.
“If women are deaf or in a situation where they cannot call, this line is invaluable,” said Jen Power, YWCA legal advocate.
And, “if they can text for help from a bathroom, they can connect with services much more safely,” she said.
YWCA Rock County has served deaf women in the past, but communication can sometimes be a barrier. That’s why Deaf Unity suggested text messages as a viable option.
The free text line is monitored around the lock seven days a week by YWCA shelter staff, much like it’s 24-hour telephone HELP line.
The text line number is 608-473-1817.
The HELP line number is 608-752-2583.
“It’ll be good for women who aren’t able to communicate in other says,” Power said.
