Rock River Charter School could grow
JANESVILLE--A Janesville charter school might expand next fall, increasing the number of young adults with high school diplomas while boosting enrollment and revenue for the Janesville School District.
Those are the benefits of a proposal the district’s administration will present to the school board early in the new year.
The proposal calls for the expansion of Rock River Charter School, which provides alternative programs that help high school students who are at risk of dropping out. The school also has programs to help dropouts get a high school equivalency degree through the GED Option 2 program.
The school had an enrollment of 156 in September. It has a waiting list, with students selected through a lottery. Officials are optimistic about increasing the enrollment.

What lies did I tell??? These charter schools are hurting lots of kids that just need to be in a real high school and get disciplined when they don't go to school. If you think these kids get the same education at Charter schools verses real high schools you are lying to yourself.

Truth,
Let us take your 1 credit junior.
.
So a kid gets messed up with wrong crowd, pot, fighting, skipping school, etc... 1 credit first two years of hight school.
.
Now, the kid gets treatment or some type of WAKE-UP call. The kid arrives at the high school as a 1 credit, junior, nearly 17 years old.
.
What should be done?
.
The RRCS, program I know of takes a kid and I believe (I am not an expert but I am pretty sure I am correct on this) in 1 year the student can earn their HS Diploma. They complete a combintation of traditional classes and must pass all 5 of the GED (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing) tests.
.
If the student does this, they earn their diploma. It might be 3 semesters instead of 2.
.
I do have a good deal of knowledge regarding the GED tests. They are difficult. It is all, knowledge based (no Homework as part of the grade). I know HS would have been MORE difficult for me if not for the homework. I needed that because some classes were really difficult and the tests seemed impossible.
.
I am not saying the system is perfect but what is the alternative. Tell them, hey, you are almost 17, 21.5 credits to go. That would be 3 years of HS. Do we want 20 year olds at Parker or Craig? NO!!!!
.
RRCS, serves a need. I believe everyone, including those working at RRCS, would love for that need to not be there. It would be better if NOBODY had 1 credit entering junior year of HS.
.
Reality tells me, that ain't happening. We need an alternative because some kids screw up and eventually need an way to graduate. Their way to graduate may not be YOUR way to graduate but that doesn't mean it is less valid.
.
Think about it....

Truth
You are either misinformed or a liar.
The first thing all students do at rrcs is take an assessment. If there score isn't adequate the are placed in a program that improves the basic skills. Then they enroll in a program that leads to graduation
. There are many options and all are more difficult than the traditional 4 year high school.
The student with 1 credit likely completed the HSED program. Not an easy program.
Lastly, if you still believe these programs are inadequate take it up with DPI. They set the requirements, not the school district of Janesville.

Was you at the graduation ceremony at the end of last school year? Did you hear the teachers saying s little bit about each student?? I am guessing around 80-90 students graduated that day. I would say 80 of them were just described as not wanting to go to school. There were probably 6-8 students that were pregnant or underprivileged. Anyway you look at it these kids DID NOT get a good education. This program is just to create revenue for the district.

Carlito;
.
You are arguing against yourself... Peer pressure? Fitting in? The charter system is specifically created to help student learners who for various reasons may not "fit in" a traditional setting. And it's NOT ALWAYS because a student is looking for the path of least resistance or is rebellious, lazy or bad.
.
If you think those students are being "warehoused" you obviously have not seen the students and staff at the Janesville charter school, it's a very busy place and there certainly is learning going on... MANY students realize they are recieving a last chance and take great advangage, turning their lives around...
.
Lastly... Noting personal and I'm sorry your "sick" of hearing about poor parenting... But most teenagers find themselves in trouble, danger and risky behaviour because their parents can't/won't/don't get involved in their lives. It's the single biggest problem in America today and single parent homes are far more likely to have these problems... Blaming schools for a disintigrating culture ignores the elephant in the living room.
As for the clown who refuses to hire people who have a charter school diploma.. What a looser! This kind if discrimination is right up ther with the Klan and other freaks and biggots. How dare you judge by that standard.

truthteller....Really? Before you start calling anyone a loser and taking the easy way out..I assume you are also talking about the honor student that found herself pregnant and knew she needed a education. The homeless student that could no longer face their peers when the life they once had was no more. The foster child that maxed out of the system(18yrs.old)that needed 2 months before graduation ....Those of you that think you know why a student is at RRC really have no clue or compassion for what these students are really at RRC for,or what they will and continue to go through.I'm very glad to see this school district is showing compassion and understanding the need for this service.

Truthteller I agree IMO Charter school in Janesville is a warehouse to the ones that the public school see as the *losers* or as ones they do not want to spend a little extra time with. Lar80 I get sick of hearing the poor parenting comments. Kids today are so Peer pressured and follow others to fit in and the way the district look at some kids in pathetic. A parent of 4 boys I can say that with experience as I SEEN IT FIRST HAND. I was not a bad parent and worked hard as a single parent Yet they chose to go a different way or were not as perfect as the school thought they should be.

Straight A student until high school. Saw friends taking the easy way out. The bottom line is these kids DO NOT get an education- they are just there to get the school district money! Talking about parenting- if your kid finds an easy path most will take it- it is hit or miss if your kid has good parenting or bad or if they are rich or poor.

Truthteller:
.
You are describing poor parenting rather than poor education in your post.
.
I've visited the Milwaukee ave charter campus and found it to be an excellent, well supervised atmosphere, though a bit crowded.
.
The truth is for any number of reasons, there are students who are unable to learn in the traditional setting. In many cases it doesn't matter why the student is different.. They just need to be given what they need. The Charter system helps some of these students.

They are really robbing these kids by not getting them an education. Charter schools are a joke and don't teach kids anything except that if they just don't feel like going to regular high school they can go to this school that they don't even have to show up for. Two hours a day is reficulous. We have a junior there right now that has a total of one credit for her first two years of high school because she would not go to school- they said he/she could graduate this year by- so the kid can cram four years of high school into less than a year by going to charter school for two hours a day when he/she feels lie gong?????? Just a shame the kids know how to play this game and the adults let this happen to raise money for the school district. This is One thing that is wrong with our system..... I know as an employer I won't hire graduates that chose to take the easy road and went to a charter school.
