Wisconsin workers could fill Belvidere jobs

Janesville native Dave McKee expects to see more traffic later this year on his daily commute to Chrysler’s assembly plant in Belvidere, Ill.

That’s because Chrysler plans to add about 1,800 jobs at the plant 40 miles south of Janesville, and some of those jobs could be filled by dislocated Rock County residents.

About 9 percent of the plant’s workforce of 2,700 comes from Rock and Walworth counties in southern Wisconsin.

The expected increase in workers to a high-water mark of 4,500 later this year presents another opportunity for local job seekers willing to work for about $15.78 per hour, which is about half the rate paid to longtime auto workers.

GM closed from the previous administration. thats fine, then idiot boy comes along and promises 250,00 jobs. he has delivered on maybe 3000 i think and i spent 9 months hitting the papers, job search sites, wherever i could find job listings into his administration. in my field of work, there has been nothing come along. as far as i'm concerned, his promise there was nothing but a lie to get elected. i ended up taking a job 300 miles away from family.
Swiss Chick: W had 8 yrs to really screw this country up. its gonna take a lot longer than 4 yrs to fix. thing is, i don;t see ANY presidential candidate with a fix on the horizon either.

the point i was making was that illinois, even with its high corporate tax is still adding jobs. what has our glorious leader here in wisconsin done towards his promise? not a dam thing except screw it up royally. and shawn you are right that the Belvidere plant makes cars on the same platform. the whole industry does this not just them. platforms chage, cars are added or taken out. thats normal and not really even a factor. what is a factor is the work force they have there. its among the best in the chrysler system. they don;t let politics ruin them like politics ruined janesville.

I've read this article around 30 times keep thinking im missing something because all I see is "Walkers" name being blurted out in the blogs. (I dont see it still) If you dont approve of Chrysler hiring then why complain? If this was a article about Chrysler laying people off you same people would complain!! You computer hero's make me smarter eveyday reading your blogs:) Thanks!

All you Dems touting illinois tax policies as the reason for these added jobs have no clue. An auto plant is a huge capital investment. You can't just willy nilly move lines and products without major costs incurred. That plant is modern for an auto plant (opened in 1965) and is centrally located right off an interstate thus reducing transportation costs. It builds smaller vehicles (Caliber and Patriot). Furthermore, Illinois last Jan raised its corporate tax 45% TO 7%. This makes Illinois the third highest corporate taxed state in the country when the the 35% Federal tax is factored in. Obviously this is why Chrysler added these jobs....NOT. Next time look up the facts before posting for we all are dumber for having read it.

Walker just acted as a real estate agent for some wealthy ie: Kochs.
The only thing Walker had planned was to sell Wisconsin.
Not only that..... he took all the tax dollars and also gave them to the Wisconsin purchasers.
Wisconsin got took to the cleaners.

ya know, some people jsut don't get it. why is General Motors even brought into this? sure, a man retires from GM with 30 yrs. he was 18 or so when he started maybe and still has kids in school and didn't wanna uproot them? I know some of my fellow co workers were in that situation. My son was recently laid off from his job in Fort Atkinson. reason?...... not enough work and he worked there 7 yrs. Scott Walkers promise to create all those jobs is shallow. he said that to get people to vote for him and his many lies he would eventually unleash when elected. he has done nothing to create jobs in this state. my son was hitting the road to try and find a new job every day for several weeks. he finally applied at chrysler. he WANTS to work but there is nothing in this area. he realizes he can eventually car pool, how tough the work will be(those who think the auto industry jobs are "Gravy" these days are out of touch with reality). he;s ready for it. he applied there one night recently after i found the link and the next morning he was already being set up for interviews. i applaud the state of Illinois for sticking with companies that work with them. Scott Walker however, needs to be recalled with all his lame and useless promises.

cynicaleye: You better go back to school to figure out your math and learn to read a map. The only way it is going to cost someone $4,000 for gas is if they are driving a vehicle that gets maybe 5 mpg, and you can get to belviedere without having to pay tolls.

"STAND WITH WALKER so you can keep more of your $15.78 per hour!!" Really? The jobs are out of state. It will cost on average $4,000.00 for gas a year to commute, plus tolls on I90. Yup. Stand with Walker and wave goodby to the jobs as they go to some other state.

$15.78 an hour? Where are all the minimum wage anti-union ghouls? You've got a whole new class of unskilled workers and labor to claw down. Think about how much of the cost of the car would be even lower if they were paid $7.50 and hour with no bennies. Look at all of those savings. Come on, dream killers. Don't disappoint.

Are you going to be the first to highlight the differences in policy between Wisconsin and Illinois that has anything to do with Chrysler sales expectations?
.
I would like to hear your ideal world of geography of where jobs are located. Do you believe no matter where you live, your job should be located a bicycle ride away?
.
Lastly, please explain how Walker has anything at all to do with an existing factory built in Illinois and the projected sales of certain Chrysler/Fiat branded vehicles. What did he do or not do to influence this market driven activity?

Vatoloco, I know several displaced GM workers that have applied for jobs at much lower rates doing everything that can't even get an interview with other places because of people's view of the GM mentality. One guy has been working at Generac for the last 6 months just to get GM off of his resume. And he worked there for 30 years. Says Generac is the worst place he has ever worked at but nobody else will even give him an interview. He wants to work, could fully retire but WANTS to work.

Jobs will always come and go. I think a major problem in this country is the media. They create a panic in the public with the way they write stuff. Jobs are like life.. its a cycle. Nothing lasts forever and where you have some companies close up and die... others oare born. The world still goes around and round.. The media has to sell papers and gain listeners/watchers so they keep people on their toes. It sucks because they create an image of society to the public that is false.
