Democratic leader says Walker recall on track

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Tuesday, January 3, 2012 - 11:57 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party says efforts to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch remain on track, but he refuses to update how many signatures have been collected.

Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said during a Tuesday conference call that the petitions will be turned in to state election officials on Jan. 17. They need 540,208 for both Walker and Kleefisch to trigger recall elections.

Recall organizers said on Dec. 15 that they had 507,000 signatures for Walker but would not give a number for Kleefisch. Tate is still refusing to say how many signatures they have for her, but he says enough will be turned in to force a recall.

Tate says they are on track to get 720,000 signatures for Walker.

60 duplicate signature doesn't mean very much. Everyone rushed out to sign in November. January signatures and probably December signatures will be verified in great length as duplicates.

Back to Back Gazette articles. Recall on track but want to block the verification process. Something smells fishy in recallville.
Duplicates and fake name/address abound no doubt. Keeps them "on track" but will be exposed in the verification process.

Do they (the ones that oppose him) have another option available after that? And if they win the recall what is the timeframe that they have to come up with a candidate? Given the incredibly high levels of interest shown on all sides of the Walker recall and his initiatives, it is difficult to assume voter turnout will be as low as it was for the general election in 2010. It is also difficult to assume the Democrat candidate will have exactly the same voter appeal as Barrett did. However, the spread between Walker and Barrett was 124,638 votes. That only requires a swing of 62,320 people to flip the election. Vote totals could, and probably will, be significantly higher than in the 2010 gubernatorial race given the participation of new voters and voters who did not vote in 2010's gubernatorial race. The effect of the new photo voter ID law is also an unknown. A much closer race than it sounds by saying the Democrat needs to 2 to 3 times as many votes as petition signatures. The possibility of beating Walker in a recall is very real.

I have talked to a number of folks out collecting signatures. I have asked each one this question; What are you "guaranteed" to gain by Scott Walker's removal from office? I pose the same question to this group. My fear is the "re-callers" are in the "anybody but Obama" mindset coming from the GOP (which is stupid and not a reason to vote for a GOP candidate), rather than having their own substantial reason for the recall. Keep in mind what's done is done as far as collective bargaining is concerned. Removing Scott Walker does not guarantee things will go back to the way they were before the election.

The reason we call Unions goons and thugs is because anymore they predominantly consist of women (teachers and nurses, govt clerks, office cleaners, ). It's much harder to demonize historically underpaid professions that happen to be mostly women, than the Al Capone and Jimmy Hoffa imagery.

@Pastafarian
Sorry to burst your bubble, but here is the real story.

WI High School Band Performance At Rose Bowl Co-Opted By Liberal Blog

By Collin Roth

As the University of Wisconsin badger football team prepared to play Oregon in the Rose Bowl on January 2, the Pulaski High School band marched in the Tournament of Roses Parade. The band marched towards the grandstand playing the University of Wisconsin fight song “On Wisconsin” but then switched their tune to “Red Wing,” a song first written in 1907 by American composer Kerry Mills. The performance of “Red Wing” begins at the 1:15 mark on the video below:

In what had to have been a thrill for high school students and a proud moment for the school and town of Pulaski was quickly co-opted by by the left-wing blog Daily Kos. In a post entitled “Pulaski WI Marching Band ‘Sticking to the Union’ in Rose Bowl Parade” the author believes the Pulaski band is playing the pro-union anthem “Union Maid,” a song which songwriter Woody Guthrie added lyrics to the tune of “Red Wing.” The blog post reads:

The Pulaski High Marching Band, of Pulaski Wisconsin, made an awesome statement in yesterday’s Rose Bowl Parade.

It was quite an honor for the Red Raiders from this small town (pop. approx. 3000) northwest of Green Bay to be marching in 80-degree weather in Pasadena, while their proud community looked on from windy 18-degree Wisconsin.

The TV coverage started as they marched along playing “On Wisconsin,” looking properly Badger-like in their red uniforms.

…I hope it was the musicians themselves who selected this song, who planned this action. It would be reminiscent of the students from East High in Madison who determinedly marched out of school down East Washington last February to swell the protests at the Capitol.

Media Trackers contacted Dr. Mel Lightner, Superintendent for Pulaski School District on Tuesday afternoon to inquire why a public school band was playing what some perceived to be an overtly political anthem and what some were hoping was a pro-union statement at the Rose Bowl parade?

Dr. Lightner explained, “We refer to that song as the ‘Red Wing’ polka.” Lightner went on to say that the band director had never even heard of the pro-union song “Union Maid” and that “Red Wing” was a tribute to his grandmother who loved the song.

“This is simply hilarious” laughed Dr. Lightner, explaining further that “they [the Daily Kos] are just trying to spin it their way.”

So what perhaps pro-union and anti-Walker folks hoped was an “awesome statement” and show of support to the Walker recall, was in the end a gross misinterpretation.

It just goes to show, even high school band performances in Wisconsin are not immune from those seeking to score political points at any cost.

Note: Kudos to the Pulaski High School band and the entire Pulaski community for representing Wisconsin well at the Rose Bowl. Well done!

Shame on the Gazette for missing one of the most important headlines of the last ten years
-- OBAMA SIGNS THE NDAA (the National Defense Authorization Act). And he did this in private, with no fanfare, on New Years Eve so as to draw the least attention as the nation readied to party. One part of the NDAA allows for the INDEFINITE DETENTION of AMERICAN CITIZENS WITHOUT DUE PROCESS OF TRIAL. This means you could be rounded up and held forever without ever being tried.
-
I put the call out to my fellow progressives, to all liberals, moderates and conservatives -- anyone who cherishes our Constitutional right to due process -- to write the President, write your Senators and Representative and let them know you will NOT be voting for them if they supported this bill. One more serious erosion of our rights and not a headline...
-
The sinister aspect of Obama's signing of this bill is that it was Obama himself who requested the specific language regarding indefinite detention. He then authored a signing statement (something he has criticized former presidents for doing) declaring his dislike for the provision -- which, of course, he requested be included. I supported Obama. I won't again.

Inequality in men’s hourly wages earnings increased by 40 percent in this same period.” The quote is from the first two sentences of a study from Harvard University published in 2009. Mouse - Actually, no he didn't. Doyle screwed me over more. You see, that's the difference. Everyones situation is different. That's why we vote. And I don't vote merely on financial issues. Far from it. There are many other issues I consider.

@fedup- It amazes me how many times you accuse people of making things up. You've done it to me too. Often when someone points out a particular deficiency in Walker's program or posts support of the recall citing an example of their own, you post that it can't be true. Start looking in the mirror- usually people who accuse others are the true culprits.

The FBI and the Justice Department have put Walkers illegal activities under the microscope, looking like he will be criminally charged eventually, so if they don't get him first, then the good people of Wisconsin will by recalling him!

My taxes went up over $150, value up thousand or two. Thanks Walker. Wait until the cuts happen next year. Yikes.

You are delusional if you think they aren't going to have enough signatures to force the recall. Whether he wins or not we'll see.

Sigma - thanks for the auto correct.
.
Always - my guess is that the ones claiming tax increases are either from districts that were not able to implement cost stablizing or reduction tools, or are just making it up in an attempt to discredit Gov. Walker. My bill was $64.00 less for 2011.

I still don't get how people are surprised by his actions. If you did your homework before voting, you wouldn't be shocked.

Mouse - Just to clarify a couple facts.
-
1) Walker is not the one heading up the recall and therefore wasting the taxpayers money.
2) Many who voted for him still support him, therefore he didn't screw the voters. He may have screwed you over because you have a different point of view from others.

He cannot give numbers because they are not there, What a crock.
Walker is doing a great job and this state is in better position than it was when the democrats ran the state. GO WALKER!!!!!!

Time will tell, if Walker is good for Wisconsin. My democat friends complained because their taxes went up this year. Well, mine went down. So I guess we will have to wait to see what good he has done, but then some people won't even give it a chance. I gave Doyle a chance......

The unions could care less how much of our tax dollars they waste on this as it is of course a last ditch effort for their survival and an attempted to regain lost power. When this is all said and done, Walker will remain as Governor and the unions will be weak and with little funds. Retain Walker - he is good for Wisconsin.

Over a million voters voted against Walker Nov. 2010. Getting half of those voters shouldn't be a problem.

Unfortunately, a million and a quarter voted for Walker in Nov. 2010. Those voters may not like having their vote overturned for political purposes.

With all the votes Walker got to be elected, he could have done some good! Guess he just screwed the voters with all his false promise.
Maybe he should stop wasting tax payers money.
