Janesville declares snow emergency--really
JANESVILLE— The city of Janesville has declared a snow emergency starting at 5 p.m. today, Friday.
All parked vehicles must be removed from city streets and public parking lots until snow plowing is complete. Violators are subject to a $20 ticket.
The city issued an errant snow emergency alert Thursday afternoon because of a computer malfunction, officials said, but this one is for real.
If you are unable to park in a driveway or garage, vehicles can be parked in one of six downtown municipal parking lots in a designated snow emergency parking stall.
They are:
-- East Wall Street lot at East Wall Street and North Parker Drive
-- Municipal Building lot at West Wall Street and North Jackson Street
-- South High Street lot at West Court Street and South High Street
-- Senior Center lot at St. Lawrence Avenue and Water Street
-- Hedberg Public Library lot on Water Street
-- River/Union Street lot at South River Street and Union Street
-- Parking ramp at North Parker Drive and East Wall Street.
Fines for parking on the streets during a snow emergency are $20. Police may begin issuing tickets to violators before plowing operations begin.
Residents can get additional snow emergency information on the city’s website here or by calling (608) 755-SNOW. To report problems or concerns, call 755-3110.

The city does offer transportation to and from school for students.... it's called the city bus. The other option would be to use the two feet that they were given.

Perhaps this go round they could actually drop the plows and plow some snow, maybe even on some of the side streets. Or do I need to pay a shovel tax for that kind of "luxury" service.

Janesburg isn't serious about "snow emergencies" unless and until they start towing violators.
There are still vehicles that haven't been moved from the last snowfall.
But, hey, better get your sidewalks to nowhere shoveled.

Does anyone know what the rules are during a snow emergency for ATV's, etc. on city streets? If you're out plowing snow and have a yellow safety light flashing, I assume it's ok, right?

Monroemom -- just because you don't see a ticket on the windshield doesn't mean a ticket wasn't issued. A couple of years ago, I thought I dodged the bullet when I arrived home late (due to the snow, ironically) and didn't get my son's car moved into the driveway until 45 minutes after the city's emergency started (he wan't home to do it himself). There wasn't a ticket on the car, so I thought I got away with it, but then a week later, a ticket arrived in the mail. So just because you don't see a ticket on the car, it doesn't mean the car wasn't ticketed.

Saxcat... You are absolutely correct. But here in Janesville, logic has become "OBSOLETE".

5 o'clock seems a little silly, though I know they won't ticket anyone. Why would people getting home from work want to drive on their driveway and pack down the snow. I'll get home about 5:30, and will park on the street until I get my drive cleared.

We live on Pontiac and there are always cars parked on the street. They are never, ever ticketed. city of janesville is all talk and no action. They could have maded enough money on the duplex across the street from me to provide bus service to the schools. I have even called before on the cars that remain parked for 2 weeks at a time. Not one ticket for 3 years until another neighbor called.

The city of Janesville should implement a system that from October to April on calendar even days all cars must park on the side of the street that’s has even address on odd calendar days all cars must park on odd address side of street.
Half the folks around here do not know what the calendar date is and the city of Janesville could generate enough money to provide student bus transportation. What kind of city does not offer school bus transportation to school for students?

WCLO's Beth Wheelock was talking to Beloit police. It's a $50.00 fine, and if they tow you vehicle a minimum $75.00-up to get it back.
