Evansville fire chief bans use of grills, consumer fireworks
The Evansville fire chief has expanded a burning ban that now includes grills and consumer fireworks until the area receives adequate rainfall.
Chief Terry Wendt and the city public safety committee discussed concerns about campfires, fireworks and grills being used in the extreme heat during a meeting Monday night, Wendt said.
“We didn’t want to end up having a problem,” he said.
Police will monitor the area to ensure compliance and issue tickets if necessary, he said. The fire department also has a $500 fee for responding to 911 calls, he said.

Metromilton, Firefighters with out home owner's insurance? Now that would say some thing. My point is everyone should get familiar with their insurance policies, know what they cover and do not cover. Mine would cover the 500 fee. Floating lantern? What was that? I know there people playing with fire works, and there people grilling. Guess what, no fire calls. I could still hear fireworks at 1 a.m.

There are many families in the EFD service area who can't afford insurance to cover the $500 fee, so to say that its "free" or "covered" is a generality at best.
Didn't see anyone chasing the floating lantern that was travelling NE of Evill tonight after the fireworks. THAT would be a big fire hazard..

They will use common sense with the thought of going out on " bogus" calls, some one grilling or they will be just setting them selves up for a big headache. They are smarter than that.

The 500.00 fee home owner's insurance covers, the same with ambulance rides, most insurance covers ambulance rides. Our does.

The $500 "appearance fee" for the EFD applies to ANY appearance (fire or not) that they make. It is non-refundable,non-negotiable.
As for the ban, common sense should be used when its very dry like this, but if you can't comprehend that or just don't care, the EFD will gladly take your $500 and drop by to see you.

I guess driving should be banned too. Traffic is really busy this time of year, the likeliness for car accidents is higher too. Maybe Chief Wiggum can issue a statement to make this public knowledge before going off to play with his snakes and sparklers.

I can picture it now. Everyone in Rock County puts their brats in the microwave on the 4th to be safe and Alliant Energy has a meltdown when we all push those start buttons for lunch.

No the 500.00 is if you have a actual fire. Just like if you take a ride in a ambulance, there is a fee that is charged.

People just do what you are going to do, but be careful doing it. We are grilling tomorrow regardless, it does say Evansville and I live in Union.
They are never going to be able to enforce , the bigger danger would be kids with fire works.
Evansville does not have the man power to enforce it, unless your neighbors rat you out, no one will know.
But like with any thing just be responsible and take extra precautions.
No wonder why Evansville can not get tourists or business it's because of clowns like this " fire chief." I go along with no fires and no personal fire works, but gas grills are very contained and controllable.
Have a great 4th!

The fire chief can issue a permit to burn when a ban is in place.

There really is no way they can enforce the grilling ban IF they allow the lions to have their shing dig. If any were were to be ticketed for grilling , and the lions are. Take it to court and fight it, you would have a very good case to have the ticket tossed. Because I read this statue and NO where does it state, burning/grilling at the fire chief/fire dept's discretion.
The other issue against the lions doing this I do believe it is Charcoal, which is 5x as likely to start a fire as any gas grill.
But if you grill just be smart about it. Extra cautious.
We grilled a couple nights ago, and my house/ deck is still standing.

wonders - most cities have control of what, when, and where people can openly burn. Ordinances usually include provisions which allow the fire chief to set emergency bans on some or all outdoor burning. The city of Evansville has such a provision...
.
Chapter 46-62(4). "The fire chief may, in his discretion, require greater distances or otherwise further restrict instances of open burning that may pose a fire hazard to the people or property of the city."

I think you will find that the Fire Chief cannot ban grills on private property but can ban them on public property. Years ago there was a very dry spell in central Wisconsin and the DNR enacted a hunting ban. They could not stop you from hunting on private property only on public lands.

Grill ban=nonsense. Thats like outlawing drinking and grilling. Most people that grill do so on a patio usually made of cement with the exception of people that do so on a deck-which isnt going to be anymore flamible now than it would before. If there that conserned, just have the hose handy. What next, no smoking outside ban... no parking the car in the grass ban... no rubbing 2 sticks together ban...

Maybe the city of Evansville can cater us food in now.
