Polls open in historic recall election

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Polling places are open in Wisconsin for a historic recall election that's expected to draw large numbers of voters.

Gov. Scott Walker is only the third governor in U.S. history to face a recall vote. One thing on which he and challenger Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett agree is that it will all come down to turnout — which candidate has motivated more supporters to go to the polls.

State elections officials predict 60 percent to 65 percent of eligible voters will turn out at the polls. The average turnout in a midterm election for governor is 47 percent.

The vote is a culmination of more than a year of turmoil in Wisconsin after Walker pushed through a bill cutting collective bargaining rights for most public employees to balance the state budget.

My apologies Poobah. I have to say I am sick and tired of all of this and can't wait until it's over. Which it won't be over, at least not until after November. Unfortunately, I have seen and heard more garbage and the Koch's, Hendricks, Union Bosses........etc. I guess I just expect it and jumped before it got that far. Maybe we will get lucky and it was a preemptive strike.....lol

localgirl75, I never said a word about contributions in my comment, only legislation. I think you've confused me with someone else. It's nice to make your acquaintance, though.

You know Poobah.... Before you get all "Kocked" up.... check the facts. I know, I know, I am asking a lot, and there is a LOT of factual data on the sheet below, so let me point out to you that the Koch's funded American's for Prosperity that has provided an estimated $2.7 million to Governor Walker, but OMG.... COULD IT BE TRUE???? That is LESS THAN ANY other outside Wisconsin group donated?? And what of Walker's claims that most of his donations came from donations of $50 or less?? OMG.... THAT'S TRUE TOO..... Oh the Humanity!!!

Ecartman said, "It is a non-issue period."

If it was a non-issue, why was the Walker/Koch/ALEC legislation necessary?

From Charles Sykes: This is your day. You've put up with the runaway senators; the threats, the siege of the state capitol; the disruptions; the vandalism; the boycotts; the walkouts; the fake sick notes; the lawsuits, leaks; the drum circles, the vuvezelas; the hypocrisy, the wasted money; the ads, the recounts, the recalls, the endless campaigns.; the out of state union bosses... now its your turn... One way or another we're going to look back on today as a turning point in our history

localgirl, thanks for the very detailed reply. I am aware of the over stuffed bill that was not passed, which created this severely misrepresented mess. I was looking for any specific instance where Gov. Scott Walker focused primarily on not supporting equal pay for women. It is a non-issue period. It is all propaganda from the left in a weak attempt to sway the uninformed. VOTE SCOTT WALKER!!!

ECartman -

What ladulce stated about repealing the Equal Pay Act is true, however, severely misrepresented. There were a lot of components that were part and parcel to that act, and yes, equal wage between men and women was one of them. BUT, anyone who does ANY research at ALL besides reading the HUFFINGTON JOKE would find that the reason had to do with frivolous lawsuits that were filed based on discrimination against businesses.

Part of the problem with this country is that it is in serious need of Torte Reform. We have become such a sue happy society, that we will take people to court over a sliver. A major problem with the Act was how it was structured in the requirements for reporting cases of discrimination. Businesses were receiving an inordinate amount of false accusations of discrimination that were baseless. Many of these cases are filed by fired employees, who were fired with cause, but wanted to get something for nothing. Businesses would then spend thousands on lawyers to prove that the employee was fired for cause and not discrimination, but those cases take time and money to prove out. Many companies found it cheaper to just pay off the former employee than to fight the case, which is sad.

I worked for an organization that fired a man who had signed a last chance agreement regarding drug abuse. He had been caught with drugs on company property, and failed a drug test, but managed to keep his job because he claimed he was an addict. His union knew he was playing a game, and was forced to help him keep his job. He signed the last chance agreement, went through rehab, and his 2nd night back to work he was caught with heroin on the property and failed a drug test. He was fired for violation of company policy and his last chance agreement. He filed a lawsuit with the state and said he was fired because he was a minority. The company I worked for kept meticulous records and the former employee had the case thrown out and he was reprimanded by the judge.

It was sad that the Equal Pay Act had so much rolled up into it, because most of the bill was garbage and caused more problems than good.

You might want to consider this...........
*On National Defense

To begin, Barrett was among a small minority of Representatives (only 15%) to vote against the Patriot Act in 2002. If the bill had not passed, it would have likely put our nation at a greater risk for a terrorist attack. Ironically, the argument of "increased government intrusion", posed by the 15% of Representatives that voted against increasing the investigative capacity of the FBI, are not used concerning the massive federal expansion of health care currently posed in Congress. [As an aside, the only Wisconsin representative besides Tom Barrett to vote against the Patriot Act was Madison's finest - Tammy Baldwin.]

Adding to Barrett's repertoire of national security, he found himself yet again in a small minority of Representatives (only 16%) that voted against setting up a national missile defense to protect American territories from a potential ballistic missile attack. Both bills rolled through Congress unabated and were signed into law the better interest of national security. And finally, it's worth noting that Barrett had consistently voted against annual appropriations bills that provide funds for our military. In some instances, he was among only 10% of Representatives that voted against military funding.

You should know:
*
On Spending and Small Businesses

As mentioned on other conservative blogs, Barrett also has a distinguished record of voting for more spending and less accountability. In 1999, Barrett voted against a bill that would have required greater accountability standards for federal spending programs. Representative Tom Barrett voted against the Regulatory Right-to-Know Act, which required the Congressional Budget Office to submit to Congress an annual report estimating the total costs and benefits of federal programs, the examination of their inefficiencies, and recommendations for addressing market failures.

Barrett also has a record of voting against the interests of small businesses. He voted against providing tax breaks for small businesses and greater protections against frivolous liability lawsuits. Given the fact that small businesses are the heartbeat of the American economy, it doesn't bode well that a gubernatorial candidate has a voting record of rejecting tax breaks for small businesses when Wisconsin is among the top 10 worse business climates in the nation.

Concerning taxes, Barrett voted against repealing the death tax, against repealing the marriage penalty, against reforming bankruptcy law, and against reforming malpractice insurance. Hearmy 4? your kids broke and live at home, or do you live with your parents?
I could vote republican if they would run a resppectable candidate, unfortunately they turn away from respectable ones (Dave Westlake) and run guys like Ron Johnson and Scott Walker, fundraisers that raise money and appeal to the masses with dumbed down "statistics" and unlimited commercials. That being said this time Ill be voting Barrett , not super excited about it, but Id vote for an Armchair over Scoot Walker and his trophy Lt Gov. Kleefisch. Talk about 2 unqualified people!! A career politician and an anchorwoman whose husband is a career politician? Boy you republicans sure do change your tune when its your "team" that has career politicians.
Either way no matter how many votes are in your home , I hope we get 100% turnoout. If Scott Walker wins he wins. I hope that one of the senate seats is over turned or this state will fall even further towards the bottom in many categories. Either way the blame will now surely shift from the recall uncertainty to Obama if things dont improve dramatically like Walker is predicting. I also see a scenario where Walker would take a cabinet position if Mittens pulls this one out in Nov as well. Funny as it may seem Walker and Obama are very similar in many ways when you compare political climates. Niether deserves re-election, but the other party has failed so drastically that they will very surely be re-elected. Sad , sad times.

Think recalls are over after today, think again.

"2003 Before the successful recall of Gray Davis, no California statewide official had ever been recalled, though there had been 117 previous attempts. Only seven of those even made it onto the ballot, all for state legislators. Every governor (in California) since Ronald Reagan in 1968 has been subject to a recall effort, but Gray Davis was the first governor whose opponents gathered the necessary signatures to qualify for a special election."

Did it make a difference? Is California better today? 117 attemps at recall, WOW! It will never end.
