Jobs report unfavorable to Wisconsin

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Sunday, March 4, 2012 - 4:01 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wisconsin has the dubious distinction of being the only state that’s lost private-sector jobs for six straight months.

And that raises the political and economic stakes of the state’s next unemployment report, which is due Thursday for the month of January, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/yVX39J ).

In contrast, the country as a whole has added private-sector jobs 23 months in a row, including almost a half-million jobs in the past two months.

“The rest of the nation is moving upwards. We’re one of the few states moving downward. There’s something wrong,” said economist Steven Deller of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who’s expected to face a recall election this summer, campaigned on a promise to add 250,000 new private-sector jobs.

But Wisconsin has lost more private-sector jobs — an estimated 27,700 — than any state in the country from July through December, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Only one other state, Missouri, came close, losing about 19,000 jobs in that stretch. And although Wisconsin added more than 41,000 private-sector jobs in the first half of 2011, losses in the second half of the year wiped out most of those gains.

Wisconsin also posted the biggest six-month decline in manufacturing jobs in the nation after California, despite an uptick in December. The newspaper said that’s significant because Wisconsin depends more on manufacturing for jobs than any state but Indiana, and it comes at a time when a manufacturing resurgence is helping drive the national recovery.

And Wisconsin’s neighbors are all outperforming the state when it comes to job growth over the past six months.

Walker declined the newspaper’s interview request, but he and his administration have painted a much brighter economic picture than these numbers suggest, the Journal Sentinel reported.

This is for the comment on "democrats fault for job losses". Seems to me Walker cut jobs. The unions wanted to bargain with him and he said "NO." He wanted to bust the unions to make them powerless. Does anyone see any of congressmen taking pay cuts, pay for their own health insurances, wanting to pay for their own medicare/medicaid like they want us to do? Does anyone see any cuts to the top? I believe they are the 1%. Why do we have to pay for their mistakes? I believe the loss for jobs starts at the top. Any cuts there? Its a joke, how about cuts at the capital and whitehouse. How about cuts at the White House? Do we need all of them? They are making way too much money with all the benefits? They need to see how it is to live like we do. Maybe, there will be more jobs. Walker, no you have not done a good job. You have lost jobs. You cut deep into the middle classe/poor. Why not leave us alone and cut some jobs at the top?

wislady, gas prices and Libya don't seem to be creating enough of a distraction from Walker's failure to deliver on his 250,000 jobs promise. I have an idea for a new approach for you. Walker said he would, "get government out of the way of employers ... who will then help Wisconsin create 250,000 jobs by 2015, and as we create those new jobs, we will be able to add 10,000 new businesses.” He didn't say where those jobs and businesses would be created. You could always give credit to Walker for the half-million jobs created in all OTHER states over the last couple of months. After all, Walker does seem to spend more time in other states, albeit at fundraisers, than he does in Wisconsin. Promise kept!

What I;ve gained from lots of reading and lot's of conversations is that business is scared of hell of WI. The climate is volatile and unstable. Many corporations have seen the protesting at the capital and want nothing to do with this state. The way they see it is if they move here and happen to take any form of incentives they will be protested. If they come here and are non union or against organizing in their company they will be protested. The have no idea of what their future taxes look like due to how volatile the politic are and no stability. Can you seriously say if you were a company manager that you wouldn't think twice about coming here?

As usual, when wislady can't dispute the facts in an article that may make Walker look bad, s/he creates a tangent. Gas prices have nothing to do with the lack of jobs in Wisconsin. Nevermind that every other state also has higher prices, yet Wisconain is the only state losing jobs. Gas prices? Libya? Obama? That's laughable. Keep it up!

ya darlene is reaching more and more every day getting more and more desparate. Relating a lower Unemployment rate to sucess? She knows the rate means nothing other than the amount of people collecting benefits, nothing more.
I for one hope that Wisconsin gains jobs in every month, I am not rootin for Walker to fail for some kind of political scoreboard watching. I(unlike darlene winklady) always want the state country to prosper no matter who is in control. Walker and his cronies are the ones failing and they have no one to blame. They have had both houses and complete control, blaming the climate in some kind of fantasy world for these people is just a bunch of BS. Businesses have been offered 2 years tax free to come here and they aren't coming, theyre leaving.
Barak Obama is not the cause of high fuel prices, FACT. So many free-market conservatives claiming so is very funny to me. Making false claims based on political hate doesnt make your claims true, it just makes you look silly. Gas prices are high because demand globally is skyrocketing(India, China, etc....) Supply and demand economics 101, take a class, my lord!! enough already.
I also find it funny that Walker is now trailing in some polls despite all of the money being spent. I for one will be voting against him in the primary and voting for the Irish farmer that voted for himin 2010, that is now posing a primary challenge. THe best part is that recallers have 2 chances to get this punk out of office, primary and general elections, so if he wins we have no one to blame but ourselves. IF he does survive, he will no longer hold total power because the senate will in all likelyhood be changing hands, thank God. Time to govern, not dictate.

wislady - gas prices are less than $2.00/gallon when Obama took office. We were also losing 700K jobs per month. Banks refused to lend any money to anyone as they absorbed the TARP that was provided under GWB. Markets were plunging to 60% of their peak value as people lost there jobs, lost their homes and lost their retirements and life savings. Want to talk about that also? Want to go back to that? Great job that your grand old party did when they had control, losing jobs, record gas prices before the economy tanked, turned a record budget surplus into a record deficit and created a record structural deficit in only 6 - 8 years of control, and you want to go back to the “good old days”. Let's talk about the whole pictures here. OK? You must get paid a bunch to writes some of the junk that you put out.

And remember: "Deficits don't matter" and "It's our due" - Draft dodging war-mongering Dick Cheney (apprenticeship under Richard Nixon). I see where you are coming from now with your blind support of Walker and his cronies - they will bring your "good old days" home to Wisconsin.

And who is most responsible for the current climate? Public union members did not cause the Great Recession, yet they were chosen (though not all of them, interestingly enough) to take an 8% pay cut to help balance a budget that, it turns out, really wasn't balanced. Walker and his lemmings in the legislature chose their method and timing to cram down their agenda of breaking the public unions, and severely underestimated the resistance. Unions represent a small percentage of all workers, yet he has managed to further polorize the electorate, instead of bringing them together. He has not created a welcome environment for outside business development, fancy slogans aside.

Hey lady - let's not forget that the prices of oil and gas were both much higher than now during the Bush administration. My point is that the President has very little to do with the price of oil or gasoline. The Dow's drop on inauguration day has been followed by some pretty decent years, in case you haven't noticed, but when you cherry-pick your statistics, things like that tend to go unnoticed. Meanwhile, Wisconsin continues to be the aberration in the data when it comes to job creation for the past 6 months. Why? The evisceration of public sector jobs has taken hundreds of millions of dollars out of the hands of middle-class families and the economy, and placed the money in the hands of corporations who spend it out of state. Epic fail, Scooter. His "fix" has us all in a "fix" now. Lack of middle-class disposable income is the death knell of any economy. So be glad your public employees are paying more for healthcare and their pensions, because that money is being socked away in pension plans and given to big insurance companies instead of being spent at your (and my) business. That's dollars out of our pockets. Sure- you may have saved $20 or so on your taxes, but after you're value meals for the family one night, what is left to help stimulate the economy?

The rising price in gas is a result of the failure of Obama, caused by the increase in cost of all commodities and the unemployment.

The fact that the Dow plunged on his inauguration day was a real tip off.

The few Wisconsin businesses that are hiring are finding it difficult to get enough skilled workers. Walker has cut $792 million in aid to school districts, $71.6 million from technical schools, and $250 million from the university system. Doyle had 8 years, Walker has been under attack since the day he was sworn in. The plan to recall started before he was sworn in no matter how good Walker did.

donnaw,
For starters, invest in education. It's the best thing we can do as far as a long term strategy for stable and productive job growth.
Second, listen. It's that simple. Listen to everyone. Don't assume you have all of and the only right answers. Show outside employers that Wisconsin a team committed to success.
Third, be innovative. Get people to invest in Wisconsin, not the other way around.

Lastly, my personal favorite (unrealistic as it may be) I would push for the decriminalization of marijuana, or at the very least, the legalization for medicinal purposes. The marijuana plant has a great number of uses and there is a lot of money to be made if it were legalized.

To reiterate, investing in education would be my first step. The second step is to bring Wisconsin together, in unity there is strength. The third step, innovate.
