Wisconsin voter ID lawsuits headed to Supreme Court

MADISON—Two lawsuits challenging Wisconsin’s law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls are headed directly to the state Supreme Court.
Two separate appeals courts on Wednesday sent appeals of lower court decisions blocking the law directly to the Supreme Court.
One lawsuit was brought by the NAACP’s Milwaukee branch and Voces de la Frontera, an immigrants’ rights group. The other was brought by the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin.
Earlier this month, two different Dane County circuit court judges issued injunctions blocking the law before Tuesday’s presidential primary.

The state Department of Justice appealed both decisions to the appeals court, which sent the cases to the Supreme Court.
The law’s opponents say it will disenfranchise minority groups, the poor, students and senior citizens who lack photo identification.

So we have to spend all this money, on top of the "new Projected shortfall created by our wonderfull gov", all for the sake of the five or six individuals caught for voter fraud in the last what 10 yrs? What a big waste. But voter fraud must run rampant according to some.

A Constitutional "right" to vote is not spelled out in the US Constitution, only that we shall pick our representatives, and states will control the method, which is why you have different states with different voting laws.
The freedom of speech is spelled out specifically in the Constitution, voting is not.

We are aware it is our constitutional right to vote, yes? I don't recall anything being tacked on to add driving, flying, purchasing tobacco or alcohol, and what not. I guess that means an I.D. should not be required...

That tax fraud that we should worry about is who are the rich that needs to be taxed. They have the public running around in circles attempting to define the rich.Clearly,if we have learned anything from the past, the only thing that this will result in,is once again the United States Congress will raise their pay to tell all the voters how dumb they were to fall for their ability to,somehow....act like idiots.

TTT please post some links to back up your hot air!
Only poss voter fraud I can remember was Bush/Gore in FL. If I remember Bush is a Rebub. Seems Walker is a Repub and he's been busted with voter fraud, so your statement "The Democrats have been the recipient of the majority of fraudulent votes for years" is false without proof.

OK, starting with the post from wislady about SATs and photos. Nothing in the linked article (or the source article from CNN.COM) stated that the student must present a photo ID. Only a head-shot photo is required. The student doesn't have to pay for a certified copy of their birth certificate in order to obtain a head-shot photo.

Secondly, taking an SAT is NOT a Constitutionally protected right, wehreas voting IS.

Finally, where is all the bashing about wasting time and money on lawsuits? I believe that some were claiming such waste for the state to defend these suits in circuit court. Well, two circuit court judges have issued rulings. Why waste more time and money on appeals? Why is it different to appeal a circuit court's ruling than it is to appeal the legislature's act to the circuit court?

There is no law that prevents me from voting, period! The only thing that prevents me from voting is ME! If required to have photo ID to prove who I am, I will get it. Maybe fraud isn't as prevelant but in many places I bet you will find people who have voted regularly and more often now then when they were alive. All I want is the security in knowing that my one vote counted, that it was my choice. Folks, I value my right to vote as I am sure you do. Is it really asking too much to verify that you are you?

Fed, that "someday" is now. I'll believe voter fraud is a significant problem in Wisconsin when I see valid research that says it is. Right now that research doesn't exist. You're free to believe what you wish regardless of whether there is any validity to it or not.

You know I wish someone would make up their mind one way or the other: because I want this recall done and over with be glad when June 5th gets here and we put an end to this once and for all. This was why I did not sign the recall I knew this would happen.

Straight from the Carter Baker commission report.
to make sure that a person arriving at a polling site is the same one who is named on the list, we propose a uniform system of voter identification based on the "REAL ID card" or an equivalent for people without a drivers license. To prevent the ID from being a barrier to voting, we recommend that states use the registration and ID process to enfranchise more voters than ever. States should play an affirmative role in reaching out to non-drivers by providing more offices, including mobile ones, to register voters and provide photo IDs free of charge. There is likely to be less discrimination against minorities if there is a single, uniform ID, than if poll workers can apply multiple standards. In addition, we suggest procedural and institutional safeguards to make sure that the rights of citizens are not abused and that voters will not be disenfranchised because of an ID requirement. We also propose that voters who do not have a photo ID during a transitional period receive a provisional ballot that would be counted if their signature is verified.

Fedup- don't you see the irony of a cheater caught cheating in an election trying to pass something to stop cheating in elections? Only the simple minded right can see nothing hilarious about a cheater saying his worried about people cheating!!

That's because you think cheating is ok as long as only the repubs do it.
you stated - "Vote for Walker and I say do it many time in many locations. Just trying to offset the fraud with fraud."
Please post a link to the voter fraud found in WI. Shall I post the links the prove walker is a cheater?

It's my understanding that the Wisconsin ID law was fashioned in accordance with ID laws that have already been upheld in the United States Supreme Court. Are the two Dane Co judges saying the Supreme Court of the United States is wrong?

Unlike the SAT scandal there is simply no evidence indicating voter fraud in Wisconsin is significant enough to require photo ID. Photo ID is the solution to a problem which doesn't exist.

I'm glad to see that the appeals courts have moved the cases directly to the Supreme Court as they were undoubtedly going to end up there eventually anyway and this saves time.

SAT cheating targeted in new rules for students

New security measures to prevent cheating on the SAT and ACT college entrance exams were announced Tuesday, including a requirement that students submit a photo of themselves when they sign up for the tests.
The measures are in response to a massive cheating scandal on Long Island last year, which is why the improved rules were announced at a news conference in Nassau County, New York, CNN reported.

"A photo ID simply won't work to game the system anymore," said Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, who is overseeing the investigation into the Long Island cheating scandal.

Starting in September, students will have to submit photos of themselves when they sign up for the exams. That head shot of the student will be printed on the student's test admission ticket and on the roster given to the proctors of the exams. Before the test, the administrators will cross reference the submitted photo with a photo ID as well as with the person taking the test. The students' photos will continue to be verified during breaks and when the tests are handed in.

Stringent photo checking is one of the precautions taken by the two companies that administer the tests, the College Board and ACT Inc., who agreed to the new measures.
