Recall election ordered for Wis. Gov. Scott Walker
MADISON, Wis. — A recall election was officially ordered Friday against embattled first-term Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker after more than 900,000 signatures were collected on petitions to force a vote.
The Government Accountability Board voted 5-0 to order the recall, a move that has been expected for weeks given the high number of signatures gathered between November and January. It took 540,208 signatures to trigger a recall.
Assuming a Democratic primary is necessary, it will be May 8. The actual recall vote then will be June 5. Three Democrats already have announced they are running and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, whom Walker defeated in 2010, has said he would announce his intentions before Tuesday.
There have been only two successful gubernatorial recalls in U.S. history, against California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921.
Walker was targeted for recall after he pushed through a law last year that effectively ended collective bargaining rights for most state workers. It also forced the workers to contribute more to their pension and health care costs, which amounted to a cut in pay.
Walker argued the changes were needed to help balance the state’s budget, while Democrats and other opponents said the true intention was to weaken the power of unions, which have traditionally opposed Republicans.
A passionate fight ensued in Wisconsin, the first state to enact a comprehensive collective bargaining law in 1959 and the birthplace of the national union representing all non-federal public employees.
Protests raged for weeks and grew as large as 100,000 people. But Walker and Republicans who controlled the Legislature never wavered and they passed the law even though all 14 Senate Democrats fled to Illinois in a failed attempt to block it.

Intrade has FINALLY put out a market on Walker's chances of being recalled (myself and others have been making requests). Market has opened at a 55% chance that he wins re-election. Pretty square opening price. If it comes down to Walker vs Fauk, I'd be buying some serious shares of walker to win, if I'm going to get near even money on it! Should be a fun one to see how it plays out!

Winterstinks, I'm confused by one of your statistics that you give Walker "credit" for:
-Cut more than 1,000 government jobs, including 735 long-term vacancies
so...the positions have been vacant for years, the people covering the vacancies are doing that job and have been for years, with no extra pay for doing more than their job requires, pay freezes for at least 2 years, but not less work...and the worker is not complaining about doing the extra work....yet you give the credit to WALKER?! Wow...yet another slap across the face to the worker who does their job plus another job and gets publicly accused of being a slacker. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND SOME PEOPLE'S LOGIC!!!! (by the way, if my arithematic is correct, it ends up being 265 government jobs he cut...generally in the corrections and education careers, which are the areas this state needs most funding and staffing to educate and protect. You see it your way, but I'll still view it as a negative.)

I'm not a big union "backer"...collective bargaining; however, IS one of the most valuable services provided by the unions. I DON'T like that the union reps "go to bat" for bad employees-no one wants a lazy co-worker, a complaining co-worker, one who makes the workday impossible to try to enjoy. IF Walker had had the sense to negotiate, compromise...or heck, even DISCUSS the issue, we wouldn't be in this situation today. It IS Walker's fault he is being recalled. Don't blame this on the public sector workers who have a right to voice their opinions. Have YOU ever gone up to your boss and said, "hey, you know, I think I'm being overpaid and you are being very generous with my benefits." ????? NO?!?! Why not?! Why WOULD YOU?! Every state employee understands that they have had very nice benefits, but that they cannot continue as they had been. EVERY state employee understands this. But...Walker successfully slapped state workers across the face, as if it were individually each state worker's fault...and then while they stood in shock, he slapped them again with not being represented in any way. This is ENTIRELY Walker's own fault for being a bully. I have no saddness that he is going up the creek without a paddle....none. zero.

I agree. Have you noticed how these thoughts are accepted when argued by lefties, but when the conservative people argue it...it is waived off as conspiracy theory? Oh, but dear my Winterstinks...how dare we ask for an ID to vote, that's going to sway people from voting. (Dumbest argument ever about having an ID to vote). I agree, Walker has pushed for fiscal responsibility and protecting our REAL rights. I love how the left is not even going to allow him a full term (if they get their way), to show the positive changes.

I guess if we end up with a patsy-freak like a Kathy Falk, then we'll just have to go back to being in severe debt with tail-wagging the dog all over the state. Maybe then we can have government push even harder than before. Not only will they raise taxes on everything like tobacco again, but now they'll punish anyone that doesn't do it their way. We can't mine, bit let's have windmills everywhere! Roads, bridges, etc are going to heck, but we have EPA, DNR, people telling us exactly what to do etc etc. Then we can attack those evil rich business types, so that no one has a job (unless it's a government position paid by the tax payers at an unequal pay scale).

Teapartysal you don’t have to like me and you are entitled to your opinion but research the Koch_Bros once you may or may not like what you find. But ask this question do you want your Governor in an individual’s back pocket? If that claim is true or would you want an honest Governor.

Teapartysal I will try my best to avoid any misunderstanding. Like you I am guilty of misspelling a few words but I’ll try my best to avoid any confusion or any miss understanding. I’m an independent always have been and always will be. The Koch_Bros that is if they are the Koch_Bros which I doubt they are thinking they can by our State and our Governor. I don’t know if you have been paying attention but there are claims the Governor Walker has been bought by the Koch_Bros. What this means if it is true is Walker sold Wisconsin out to a special interest. I have a problem with that because the person claiming to be the Koch_Bros in my opinion is really the Koch_Bros. I also don’t like people special interest coming into Wisconsin thinking they can by Wisconsin the people run this state and not the special interest or individuals. If they were the Koch_Bros let me ask this if I may if they were the Koch_Bros do you really think they we waste time with a rincky dink paper like the Janesville Gazette? I have researched the Koch’s once the claim was made I know all about their family history and how many times they been in trouble with the government. They’re not the type of people I want doing business in Wisconsin like that. When I vote for someone I am voting for a candidate not a special interest. When I vote for a candidate I expect them to keep their promise once in office and not just make a speech because it’s there idea of what they think the people want to here. I do not want a candidate in office that sells out to a special interest or individuals or politicians that run away from their responsibilities. That is not what in my opinion Wisconsin is about. Wisconsin is about family our friends and neighbors sticking together and doing the right thing to move Wisconsin forward. That in my opinion is what I think Wisconsin is about.

TheJoker,
At what point did I compare Walker to Hitler et al? I was pointing out why your logic is false.
My opinion is not based on any affinity for public employees. My opinion is based on how Scott Walker conducts himself, as I have now repeated. I do not have any family members in the public sector.
You could go on and on about how wrong I am? Go ahead, start. I'm waiting. I've asserted many of my opinions, some of which are strong opinions. Regardless, I often point to the fact that they are just my opinions.
To put it another way, I'm not saying that I am right and Eagle1 is wrong, for example. I am saying this is my opinion, and I respect Eagle1's opinion, even though it differs from mine. If you haven't noticed, Eagle1 has returned the favor. I think if we all learned to do that, the environment would become a lot less hostile.
I am not so sure you've made me look foolish to anyone but yourself. However, obviously I can not pass fair judgement on myself, so I will let others decide which one of us looks more foolish.
I enjoy when people use proper grammar and spelling, but I don't enjoy arrogantly pointing out grammatical errors others make. Almost everyone knows the term, grammar Nazi. In the end, words are just arbitrary symbols. We've assigned meaning and value to these symbols to help make communication easier, but the message someone wants to convey need not absolutely depend on these meanings or values. As long as you can understand the message someone is trying to get across, there is no need for correction in an informal setting, in my opinion. After all, we all make mistakes. Even the most careful writers will make grammatical errors. The only issue is, if, due to poor grammar, a message is not very clear, that leads the receiver of the message to make assumptions in order to interpret what is being said. Sometimes false assumptions can and will be made.

Eagle1,
When I compare what Scott Walker did with Act 10 to what Obama accomplished with the health care overhaul, I frequently come to the same conclusion.
Scott Walker pushed through the budget repair over night, and the only reason it took so long to pass was because our state senators were able to prevent quorum. The health care bill that was passed took several months of negotiation.
Act 10 was passed with absolutely no compromise, and no input regarded from the Democrats (or any other political party). The health care overhaul received great input from Republicans, even though in the end, they still did not get behind it. It is one reason most liberals complain about the health care bill. For instance, I wish we had a single payer option, and originally that was the plan.
While both pieces of legislation became hot button issues, and both seem partisan, that is about where the comparisons stop. In fact, there were a lot of compromises made on the health care bill. Obama did not consider compromise a dirty word, and he tried very hard to please everyone.
I have frequently said, I do believe that Scott Walker had the right to advocate for Act 10. He won the election to be governor, he gets to drive the bus. However, he also has an obligation to get input from everyone else. He has an obligation to listen to people's concerns, and consider compromise. Yes, reform unions. Yes, balance the budget in the manner that you think is best (for Republicans, that seems to usually involve cutting social programs, and tax cuts for businesses or the wealthy). However, don't tell everyone else their opinion doesn't matter.
A careful analysis reveals the differences between Scott Walker and Obama. Obama won the election, he was voted president. Obama wanted to push through health care reform. Obama listened to the opposition and tried to work with them. Obama made compromises to try to please everyone. Republicans didn't want health care reform period, so no matter what Obama did, they wouldn't be happy. However, Obama tried to please all. Walker wanted to hurt the unions. Democrats wanted to soften the blow. It didn't matter to Walker, he decided he had a mandate, and he ran with it.

You're welcome. I really wish more people would state reasons besides, "Walker attacked the unions" to recall Walker. I hope that people are not just blindly following unions in this fight. I hope people share my concerns, and want to recall Walker for the same or similar reasons I do.
Now that I realize you are a libertarian, your arguments make sense to me. It is absolutely true that so many people wouldn't have been affected if government had not grown so large. In some ways, I do agree with you. Sometimes it seems government is too big. However, I think perhaps the real problem is inefficiency. If the government were more efficient, it may seem smaller. I also definitely champion social programs. Public education and health care for everyone are two ideas I believe in very strongly.

TheJoker,
Why is it so difficult for your to accept that I have an opinion based on logic? Is it because, perhaps, your opinion is based on feeling? Do you simply feel as though I am delusional, and paranoid? Do you simply feel as though I am a cry baby, whining because I didn't get my way? Do you feel as though Walker is a great person? Or do you have some sort of logic you are using, but for whatever reason, you would rather flame people and troll the forums, versus have an adult conversation? You said that you are a professional, so why do you never act like a professional on these forums? Are you lowering the bar of what it means to be a professional?
If you want to flame and troll, please direct your comments toward other trolls. There are plenty on this site, arguing for both sides. If you want to be an adult, a professional, and have a real conversation; if you want to find out how the two of us simply have a fundamental difference of opinion; if you ever want to respect someone even though their views differ from yours; if you ever want to open up your mind at least a little bit, and agree to disagree; if you want to allow someone to have their own opinion, for the courtesy in return, then talk to me, or others on this site similar to myself. Otherwise, you are nothing more than a distraction. Please let the adults have a reasonable conversation. Please let the adults focus on making some sort of progress. Please let the adults try to understand each other better.

TheJoker,
Have you ever had anyone analyze yourself? You said I have a lot of nerve challenging you. Do you think so highly of yourself, or is it that you think so lowly of myself? So, you deal with people like your perception of me in your every day professional life. And just what is your perception of me, exactly? You base your claim on my supposed paranoid rants and delusions. What, pray tell, are these paranoid rants and delusions?
Let me ask you this. Have you ever met Adolf Hitler? Saddam Hussein? Osama Bin Laden? Gaddafi? Timothy McVeigh? Benito Mussolini? If not, how can you claim to know anything about any of those figures? Further, your logic is faulty beyond just that one point of contention. By your logic, I would have to have met every, or nearly every, governor Wisconsin has ever had, in order to declare any governor the worst governor. That's not even physically possible. Your requirements mean then, that no conclusion could ever be reached. The best a person could hope to do is compare a governor to all the governors that person has met in their entire life.
This recall has nothing to do with, "your candidate lost and you just can't accept it." Nothing at all. It has everything to do with how Walker has conducted himself as our governor. It has everything to do with the black eye Walker has given Wisconsin. It has every bit to do with why we are even arguing right now. Walker polarized the state more than I've ever seen, and probably more than any other governor of Wisconsin, ever.

Fear,
First off Walker is 50% approval and 45% disappove and 5 undecided. I did answer your recall question. Second, lets play Democrat - Walker was elected to stop thousands and thousands of public workers from getting laid off. Not just teachers, but our valued protectors. So to play Democrat, and to balance the budget, Walker lays off all those thousands and thousands and the left will say "he balanced the budget on the backs of the middle class" - instead he saved those jobs and asked for a small percentage and gave the schools the chance to save money. He gave those thousands that still have their jobs a choice to opt out of the unions instead of contributing with forces extraction of union dues. Yup, he should have just laid off those thousands and thousands and thousands. That was Barretts plan and he lost 2010.

Kai thank you for your earlier post outlining your opposition to Governor Walker, You honestly are the first person online or in real life conversations I have had, that has avoided the usual blind rhetoric. I spent several hours asking why I should support a recall and got nothing but the predictable response filled with catch phrases and code words.
As a small government Libertarian I can't say your arguments persuaded me to believe the actions taken by Walker were wrong, I personally don't think he went far enough, I guess I am a mega extremist. I will agree that perhaps his methods were not ideal, but couldn't you say that about the Healthcare bill in DC two years ago?
I may not like the tactics or the legislation tied to it, but I also do not support recalls unless there is an extreme circumstance requiring it, I was in CA when Davis was recalled, that was a joke as well. This doesn't really live up to that. If Walker had overstepped by passing legislation involving private unions and what they pay for benefits then I would agree. But since Public Employees are at the mercy of the government as far as these things they have to live with the results no matter what party is in control. One could argue that not as many people would be affected by ACT 10 if Government didn't continue to grow, I know that is unpopular but I think the signs are there that reduction in government needs to happen sooner rather than later.

To answer one question - yes, there can be a recall of the recall election, after the winner holds office for 1 year. Of course, by that time it will be time for another general election for Governor. Republicans should run someone against Scotty. Thekai hit the nail on the head with the earlier posts. Walker is an extremist. Schultz would be a moderate that would most likely guarantee a Republican win. But just like people say about the "union bosses" deciding on who runs for the Dems, the Tea Party bosses will tolerate no dissent. One side is just as bad as the other. However- one more thing to consider - Walker will most likely not survive the "john doe" investigation that is ongoing. So even if he wins - he will probably be forced out in disgrace. All the more reason for another Republican to step up.

Scott Walker is the bottom of the barrel, it would be difficult to find anyone who would make a worse governor. More importantly, we need a governor who will unite us, not further polarize us. Scott Walker absolutely will not accomplish that task. I think Kathleen Falk may not be the best candidate to unite us, but if I have to choose between her or Scott Walker, the choice is very obvious and simple. Scott Walker is probably the worst governor Wisconsin has ever had. I will not support someone who believes that compromise is a dirty word.

poorrichard,
You could be right. However, by refusing to negotiate, Scott Walker didn't even give a chance to verify your assumptions. He didn't make a tough decision at all. It appears he decided he does not like unions (possibly through political motivations) and he wanted to dismantle them. It's that simple. If it truly was all about the budget, then why did he take the money he saved and give it away to the extremely wealthy? Scott Walker's term as governor was nothing but a political chess move. It has nothing to do with what is better for the state, and everything to do with what is better for the Republican Party.
I fully support reforming unions, but you don't do it without at least attempting to get some co-operation.
I have made this analogy in the past. Unions are to the workforce what an air conditioner is to a home. They make everything more comfortable and tolerable. However, through the years, many of these unions have become corrupt. The air conditioners are now loud, clunky, and much of the energy they use is not going toward conditioning our homes. Indeed, they need to be fixed. However, Scott Walker's approach was to destroy the air conditioner. Truly, if you take a baseball bat to an air conditioner, you will solve the problem of inefficiency. However, now there is no air conditioner. Rather, we should open it up and try to fix whatever issues it has.
I don't believe most people are being honest with themselves when they say they support Scott Walker. We could easily have a Republican Governor who is willing to work with all of Wisconsin, not just the Republicans. Scott Walker is ruthless. He is a liar and a cheater. Before he was governor, he said he would work with unions, and he was not going to remove their right to collectively bargain. Clearly, he lied. During his time as Milwaukee County Executive, many of his staff members stole from tax payers, and did campaign work on county time. Some of his staff members stole money from veterans. Scott Walker is not a good person. He's not a role model anyone should follow. He is ignorant, and a bully of all bullies. For any good that he has accomplished, he has also accomplished ten times more bad deeds.
If you imagine a choice between not Scott Walker and a Democrat, but Scott Walker and another republican, perhaps Dale Schultz or maybe even Paul Ryan, would there still be so much support for Scott Walker? Scott Walker is an extremist. We don't need extremists from any political party. We need people with a level head on their shoulders who are willing to make the truly difficult decisions. The decision to cross the party line and work with those you disagree with on fundamental levels. Most likely not a single one of us has all of the right answers, so why does Scott Walker pretend he does?

She refused both requests to remove the sign or take a new assignment.
Taylor left work early Thursday and was asked not to work Friday.
Diversified Building Maintenance told the Journal Sentinel that it planned to have Taylor working this week, either at the school or somewhere else with the company."
http://dailyunion.com/main.asp?SectionID...
It sounds like there was something more to the story than what has been reported (surprise there.) However, the employee is still working at the same job, and has not lost any pay due to the incident.
Something definitely happened there, but none of us know the details (if you do know the details, perhaps you should speak up).
We could speculate all day. The company that employed the woman claims she was never fired. We could speculate that she got into an argument Thursday, went home, and made a conscious decision not to come into work on Friday entirely on her own. Perhaps she was so upset she assumed that since she didn't like the two options she had been presented, that effectively meant she was wrongfully fired. Maybe this story is a politically motivated fabrication.
Or maybe she was told not to come back to work. Maybe there was injustice. Maybe this is an example of one administration that over stepped, and then corrected itself after review.
We just don't know at this time. What we do know, is that some people are taking this story and running with it, without all of the facts present. It's a good way to get people fired up, but its also a lie.

wonders,
Thank you for your input. You shed some interesting light on the issue. As to your question about someone on the left being recalled, we can reference this very article.
"There have been only two successful gubernatorial recalls in U.S. history, against California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921."
I don't know about Lynn Frazier, but Gray Davis was indeed a Democrat. Since you only asked if anyone on the left was ever recalled, I don't see the need to see if Lynn Frazier had any party affiliation.
As I said, I do believe you brought up a good point. However, many people who signed the recall petitions were not members of a union. I truly believe the reason Scott Walker got recalled is because of the actions and mannerisms of Scott Walker. He made a bold move and the public reacted. Most likely, he even knew there would probably be a significant effort to recall him before he decided to take away the right for public employee unions to collectively bargain. However, I think if Walker worked with the unions, and still pushed hard to remove or suspend the right (as opposed to shutting his office door and essentially saying, "my way or the highway,") there might not have been enough support to get him recalled. Personally, I supported the recall because of the type of person Walker is. We don't need a governor like that. Had a more reasonable governor pushed for many of the same reforms, I probably wouldn't have signed a recall petition.
If Scott Walker said he wanted to remove the right to collectively bargain, but ended up compromising for something less severe, I doubt he would have been recalled. The man refused to cooperate with the rest of the state who ardently disagreed with him. He refused to be an effective leader of all of the people in Wisconsin. He should have been a lobbyist, not a governor.

Thekai and Cynicaleye, I may be able to answer your question as to why Doyle was not recalled, or at least attempt to.
The right is typically not organized labor, and without that it is hard to get a recall started. When you have a rank and file group of people it is much easier to start a recall and get enough signatures.
It does not make it right or wrong, just easier to have it organized. The people on the right are not any less hard working, but they tend to be more independent than the left. In that I mean they are not as deep in unions, although some union members are to the right.
Maybe this can help clarify a little, is it easier to have a group of students that attend Craig and Parker organize something, or is it easier to have the same number of home schooled students do that same organization?
It comes down to numbers in the same location, nothing more or less.

Usaret - while I am on your side of the argument, free speech is guaranteed on your private time and property, but not on your employer's time or property. Most employers would not allow political activities on the job, and this would fall under that category. I don't think they could make the employee take a bumper sticker off their car, but maybe they couldn't park in the parking lot and would have to park on the public street. For that matter, if your behavior on or off the job adversely impacts the employer (even the public's perception of the employer), you might find yourself out of a job. Unless you have a union to protect you from your own bad behavior.

I noticed this morning a woman was fired for having a "Support Walker" in her car in the school parking lot vs. the dozen "Recall Walker". This is what we are fighting for. Democrats and Unions will try to silence you with threats and now even your job. The Democrats will be as stunned at losing this time as they were losing their power in Wisconsin. It will be exhilarating.

Let's get it on! Time to have our voices heard...again...at the ballot box with the re-election of our Governor Scott Walker.
Democrats have no idea how much dedication is out their for Walker. We are waiting for our turn, and it's coming!

cynicaleye, I love the assumptions people make when I make a statement, I have never nor ever will attend a tea party event or join them, they are as ridiculous as the idiots at the capitol on the other side. Secondly I was not living in WI when Doyle was governor, so I cannot speak to that, my guess is perhaps your opponents are not as emotional as you and therefore allowed for Doyle to serve out his term.

None of the three declared Democratic candidates for governor has completely won over the voters
The real issues now is to find the right person to take back the governors office.

With itelligence I can see walker as a lying, cheating, corrupt, power hungry puppet. His actions prove what kind of person he is. To stand behind this thug is proof of ignorance.
Just as demo Blago got his, so will repub Walker. Any politician no matter what party, that does his job in this manner has got to go! If you think these type of heads of state are great people, this says alot about your own character and screams how ignorance is rampant in your life.

Oh where, oh where can they be,
With their fifes so short and their rhetoric so long,
Oh where, oh where can they be?

Very Valid points Kai, however I think anyone that votes based on party affiliation has generally checked their intelligence at the door. This whole recall process has illustrated the insanity that exists in both parties.

Based on observations of this website, I would say that wiggle is at the very least more intelligent than you, Feduptaxpayer. Of course, this website could be quite misleading. There is no real way to accurately predict a person's intelligence based solely on how they blog on this website.
Either way, wiggle was actually stating that most people who vote for Democrats are more intelligent than people who vote for Republicans. I think that claim is actually backed up by statistics. However, it is important to note that this does not mean anyone who votes Democrat is intelligent, and anyone who votes Republican is not intelligent. In fact, I know a few Republicans who are very intelligent indeed.

Repubs whine and cry because intelligent people are using the 'tool' our government gave us to get rid of the cheating, lying, corrupt, violence threating king of repubs of WI. 'Oh boo hoo these mean intelligent people won't let us keep our koch puppet king, the one who wants to turn the middle class into uneducated poor folk that will work for peanuts and be to stupid to know they can change the state into something better!!'
Cry me a river on the cost of cleaning up WI, as an itelligent person I thimk it's worth every dime!

Anybody seen anything in the Gazette about the Whitewater high-school custodian that was told to remove her "Stand with Walker" sign? If it had been a "Recall Walker" sign it would have made headlines and the Left would have been up in arms about the inhumanity of it all. Suppose Free Speech belongs only to those on the Left.

Well just because the people have spoken will not mean that Falk is a shoe in for Governor. Remember this only poll that counts will be the one take on Election Day. Come June 5th will see how the people will vote that is the only poll I am interested in.

Eagle1,
I don't know about the situation in New York, but in Wisconsin, Doyle was not impervious to a recall election. He simply did not do anything nearly as bad as what Scott Walker did.
What reason(s) do you have for supporting Walker? I have a hard time understanding why someone would support a person with the characteristics of Scott Walker. He treated unions not as a part of the state, but as the enemy. He refused to compromise with the unions, at all. He didn't even make an attempt. That's how we treat terrorists. Do you really think that unions are terrorists? I'm not saying unions are perfect, and you might be surprised to learn that I believe unions absolutely need reform, but why not try to work with the unions?

Really? I don't remember it happening with the previous Governor or with the current Governor of New York, it's pure and simple politics. It's been a joke from the beginning and continues to be. Call it what you will everyone can see it for what it truly is, if they just open their eyes.
