Wis. recall pits friends against each other
JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) — Carousel Consignments looks like your normal knickknack store. It's got everything from furniture to CDs. But lately it's become something more — another battleground as Wisconsin lurches toward this spring's recall elections.
Owner Joni Bozart has spent the past few weeks listening to customers quarrel over Republican Gov. Scott Walker's virtues or lack thereof. As battle lines harden heading into the June 5 general election, the little shop on South Main Street in this blue-collar city 45 miles south of Madison has become a microcosm of a state so divided over the governor that some friends and family members can barely speak to each other about him.
"We used to say the only thing that got people fighting in the store was Brett Favre," Bozart said, referring to the Green Bay Packers' decision to trade the beloved quarterback in 2008. "People get angry (about the governor and the recalls). Most people back away, but sometimes people are looking to pick a fight."
Walker and rival Democrats tore the state apart in February 2011 as they struggled over Walker's contentious collective bargaining law. The measure required most public workers to contribute more to their health care and pensions and stripped them of nearly all their union rights.
Walker said he had to make the moves to help balance the state budget and give local governments the flexibility they would need to absorb deep cuts in state aid. Conservatives around the country rallied around him, elevating him to superstar status.
Democrats, though, saw the moves as a calculated blow against organized labor, one of their key constituencies. Minority Democrats in the Senate fled to Illinois in a futile attempt to block a vote on the measure while their Assembly counterparts joined with tens of thousands of protesters in a three-week, nonstop demonstration at the Capitol.
Republicans who control the Legislature ultimately passed the measure and Walker signed it into law. Talk of recalling the governor began almost immediately and has dominated Wisconsin politics as the fight evolved into a national referendum on union power and conservatives' agenda.
Almost everyone in the state has formed an opinion on the governor and there's no swaying them. A Marquette University Law School poll released a week before Tuesday's primary for the recall election found a third of registered voters who responded had stopped talking to someone because of disagreements over the recall or Walker.
"I have patients who are losing friendships," said Mahmoud Ahmed, a Marshfield Clinic psychiatrist in Eau Claire. "The political divide is becoming so ugly. People are taking it as a matter of if you are with them, you are not with me. If you don't agree with my views, you are the enemy."
Bill Stratton, 65, a retired sales representative from Union Grove, said he had been close friends with a Racine-area restaurant owner. Things changed last year after Stratton made a casual comment about what a good job Walker was doing.
The owner responded with a stern glare and hasn't spoken to him since, he said. Stratton still greets the man but even now is met with stony silence or a lack of eye contact, he said.
"He hasn't spoken to me, but I still like him, I'll still patronize his business," Stratton said.
Roommates Kim Strike and Michelle Hanaman have stopped talking about the governor. Strike, 44, owns a hair salon in Janesville. Hanaman, 40, is a nursing assistant at a Beloit nursing home. As the two sat in a Janesville bar on Thursday, Strike began a discussion with a reporter by saying Walker deserves a full four-year term.
"Everybody had to take their cuts in their own way (in the failing economy)," Strike said. "People should have more patience. He hasn't had enough time."
"Not enough time, my (expletive)," Hanaman muttered.
Strike explained that she's always been a small business owner while Hanaman was once part of a union when she worked for Allied Automotive.
"We try not to bring it up," Strike said.
Janis Hansen, a 67-year-old retiree from Sheboygan, said she sided against Walker as soon as he introduced the collective bargaining measure, saying he demonized public sector teachers. But not everyone in her family agrees and she's learned to keep her mouth shut.
"There are times when it's better to say nothing," she said. "I just try to avoid the subject."
Walker campaign spokeswoman Ciara Matthews didn't comment.
Walker's two chief Democratic opponents, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, have promised to close the ideological gap. They've been vague about how they would do it. Barrett said he'd reach out to people and try to show them he doesn't want to embarrass them; Falk said she has a long record of bringing people together and would start by immediately visiting Waukesha, perhaps Wisconsin's most conservative city.
Lynn Turner, a Marquette communications professor, said people must learn how to tolerate each other again.
"To completely shut down, that's a mistake. Then we don't exercise that skill listening to someone's opinion contrary to their own," she said. "If we don't practice that skill, we can never solve intractable social problems, much less live together in healthy relationships."
For Joni Bozart at Carousel Consignments, it's simple.
"I just wish people would stop fighting," she said.

Poobah; When I said we, I was referring to the Democratic Socialists of America. The DSA wants to spent the savings on social programs. It seems everything but Social Security.
And speaking of Social Security it's not much of a social program since people have SS deducted from
their pay checks. Once the gov gets their hands on "our" money, it suddenly becomes their money.

In reference to my May 7, 2012 at noon comment, I should have used the word nominated instead of appointed. This doesn't change the application of RetiredAirForce's "principle of partial culpability" to the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion as the five justices that were required to form a majority were nominated by Republican presidents Eisenhower and Nixon.

I agree with almost everything in your May 7, 2012 at 11:40 a.m. comment. The only exception is that the "we" you were referring to is the website you cited, and not myself, as I don't support the government funding any of those three endeavors. I also have been an outspoken proponent of cutting our military spending. I would use the savings, in part, to create jobs and the good news is that it is much less expensive to create jobs in healthcare, education and clean energy than it is to create military jobs.

Applying RetiredAirForce's logic, Republican presidents Eisenhower and Nixon, are partially culpable for the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, having appointed the required five justices to make a majority on the court of nine justices.
Majority Opinion (5 Republican appointed justices, 2 Democrat appointed justices)
Harry Blackmun (Nixon-R)
Warren E. Burger (Nixon-R)
Lewis Powell (Nixon-R)
William J. Brennan (Eisenhower-R)
Potter Stewart (Eisenhower-R)
William O. Douglas (Roosevelt-D)
Thurgood Marshall (Roosevelt-D)
Minority Opinion (1 Republican appointed justice, 1 Democrat appointed justice)
Byron White (Kennedy-D)
William Rehnquist (Nixon-R)

Where we disagree is to cut the military budget to fund unions, and political friends, bureaucratic waste like trips to Vegas. I say cut the military budget and balance the federal budget, not squander it, or give it away.
Those high rollers in D.C. don't need Janesville dollars, they just print more dollars devaluing the currency. We pay for this incompetence at the gas pump, grocery stores and everything else we buy.
No matter who wins this recall, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The recall didn't pit friends against each other, Walker did.
Walker helped the majority of the state. The recall brought upon by unions using propaganda and misinformation pit friends against each other.
Once Walker and the 4 Senators retain their seats, I would hope they take on the recall process to be less about disagreement in policy and more about dishonoring the postion such as Jeffrey Wood and Peg Lautenschlager have.

RAF – first of all I do not know what half of these organizations are and I believe Air America no longer exists (may be wrong about this). I guess I can google “right wing organizations” and make a list also but what does it prove? I said what I said and stand by it.
"Not to mention the liberal ran mass media of ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, and hundreds of newspapers." I will give you that MSNBC is left leaning similar to Fox News being right leaning except that MSNBC will actually tell the audience from time-to-time that they are biased in case one cannot discern that on their own – they do not pass themselves off as “fair and balanced”. The rest of the networks mentioned are quite main stream and about as bland as can be so they are able to get generic interviews with big name politicians and personalities. If they do investigative journalism as they did before they became entertainers, big names would no longer show up and they fear their ratings will drop along with advertising revenue. I try to validate most everything that I hear plus make it pass the “sniff test” before considering it solid information. So what is your point?
"But you only mention a few organizations that you don't like out of political views while claiming you are against divisiveness. How does ignoring all of it solve the problem?" I claimed this? I discussed it but I will not just simply agree with the right wing radicals to avoid divisiveness – I believe they are wrong in their direction, their tactics and their misleading ways of governing. Being divisive is what the right wing always claims. It is like “look over there and ignore that we are doing what we are accusing others of doing”.
Further, I noted in your response that you did not disagree with any of my points – something that further validates that I am correct. Thank you for doing that.

KLC, I understand your point about belittling neighbors and throwing blame around, but this article is a piece of political junk that only raises the temperature by attempting to blame the animosity and division in families, communities and throughout the state - on the recall effort. Look at the title and then look at the statement in the article, "Walker and rival Democrats tore the state apart in February 2011..." That's pure BS. There is no equivalency between what Walker did and the response from the “other side.” The fact is, Scott Walker was the lone aggressor who initiated the war when he "dropped the bomb." You don’t build unity and civility by dropping bombs and you don’t restore unity and civility by letting an aggressor have their way. Walker's supporters should be ashamed of his behavior and help re-unite Wisconsin by joining the recall effort.

I find that people that think this recall will change things will be disappointed. Just like California in 2003.
Before the successful recall of Gray Davis, no California statewide official had ever been recalled, though there had been 117 previous attempts. Only seven of those even made it onto the ballot, all for state legislators. Every governor since Ronald Reagan in 1968 has been subject to a recall effort, but Gray Davis was the first governor whose opponents gathered the necessary signatures to qualify for a special election.
Did Arnold Schwarzenegger change things? Is California better off today than 2003?
So it will be with Wisconsin, no matter who wins, Voters lose.
You see, If Walker wins, it will be my way or the highway. If Walker loses, the Democratic Socialists of America will be in the drivers seat and the fiscal give away for political pay backs will begin. Just like Illinois, New York, California, and Washington D.C.
Here is the way I'm calling it. The Republicans will hold the Assembly ( at least till Nov.) Senate will go Socialist, and governor is a toss up unless Falk is the opponent, then it's Walker.

This governing style and uncaring divisiveness is actually a result of the Koch Bros. (and others) funded echo chambers coming to full fruition. From:
- the funding of “Think Tanks” such as Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation (tax deductible in many cases).
- to the talking heads in the media owned by Rupert “unfit to own” Murdoch (Fox News – GOP TV - and WSJ to name a couple of his larger US holdings)
- to the audience that can only access right wing owned radio ten-to-one over progressive radio
- to the churches that have sold themselves to the Republican/Tea Party and preach and endorse the Ayn Rand inspired form of Republican “Christianity” (i.e. exactly the opposite of what Christ teaches. It is not what you say, Paul Ryan and Scott Walker but rather what you do – Christ addresses that also in Parable of the two sons in Matthew 21:28-32)
- to other forms of media used and published to support the views of the right wing “think tanks”
- to the Koch Bros funded AFP ground troops that work as activists to support the overall plan rooted in the “think tanks” and basically bribe or extort politicians to support their views (signing allegiance to Grover Norquist taking precedence over their oath of office is a good example).
- to the politicians who then must read the right wing “think tank” scripts (ALEC scripts are good examples) or face losing a primary race
- to the politicians who, after elected, quickly change laws and appoint judges, not to be fair and protect our freedoms, but rather to protect the tactics that were used to gain power and favor from the very wealthiest (disingenuous Voter ID laws & the Citizens United case comes to mind which is allowing all of the outside money coming into Wisconsin politics now).
This all got its start with the Lee Atwater/Karl Rove/Rush Limbaugh smash-mouth style of politics. And will go on and on until we no longer have any real representation or middle class or until this dangerous structure has some limitations put on it to ensure all are represented - not just the wealthy who will buy power. It is called struggle for freedom I guess – and it does hurt a lot as it has gotten so out of control with people who willingly ignore science and proven facts (failure of trickle down economics is one proven fact that is ignored) and discredit and invalidate objective thinking, learning and knowledge.

badger2 - I have friends - Dems & Reps - all over this country and they laugh at WI because we can't get our act together. They think it's funny that we can't allow our governor a complete term and won't give him a chance to fulfill his duties. They laugh at our definition of "Democracy". They think we're a bunch of morons who act like little kids and when we don't get our way, we throw a temper tantrum. They can understand why businesses don't want to come here. How sad is it that people have opinions about us in that way?? Pretty pathetic! Perhaps these people were thinking of you in that way.

mjbike2 - I bet all the money in the world that you step into any business that has a sign outside saying "RECALL WALKER". You are a huge hyprocrite!!! If you were NOT a hyprocrite, your post would have stated "I stopped shopping or eating at any business that show their support either way - FOR or AGAINST Walker" but you did NOT!!! One-sided much? You bet! Just admit it. You're a Walker hater.

I have a relative who constantly bashes Republicans and doesn't think anyone SHOULD object to the postings. Never gives credit to Republicans for anything. Always one-sided. This is America and EVERYONE has the right to voice their opinion. Unfortunately, my relative feels if your opinion doesn't jive with theirs, you don't have the right to say it, you are wrong or you are uninformed. Because of this, my relative is now distant with me. Liberals preach about tolerance and humanity BUT do not practice what they preach. If Walker isn't re-elected, will there be ANOTHER recall?? Yes!!!!

I have had heated discussions that unfortunately have degraded into antagonistic arguments over Walker, the recall, and all the related hullabaloo. Things have gotten better in my estimation and will continue to do so - the key is to remember we are Wisconsin and we are nice here.
-------
Intelligent people can disagree, even fervently. We all give to charity, go to church, love our families, and help our friends.
-------
The saddest and scariest part of this whole debacle is that we have been convinced by the puppet-masters on both sides that we aren't the moderates we used to be - we are all supposed to be political fringe wackos.
-------
Listen to your neighbors, have a spirited discussion, shake your head at their short-sightedness, and then toast to another beer - because you are still friends.

The only thing more delusional the poo thinking he has friends is fake posters claiming they have always voted for a political party and now will vote for a fake candidate.
The reason this topic has pitted people against one another is due to the excessive false information being peddled and absorbed by many non-thinking voters.

Regardless of who wins the recall election, 50% of the population will not be happy with the choice. It's not Politics across the country are becoming more and more contentious along party lines, not just in Wisconsin. It's hard to find a moderate public voice anywhere anymore, and it certainly isn't happening in Wisconsin whether Walker, Barrett, or Falk is elected.

I have voted Republican my whole life, including for Scott Walker. I believe in their core values. But, I cannot support Scott Walker after seeing what his agenda is really about. This has been a real contentious debate amongst my republican friends. It leaves me no choice but to vote for the other Republican on the ticket, Arthur Kohl-Riggs. Maybe he will be a little more centered than Governor Walker.

Not just friends but family as well. Last few years I've lost all my friends and family because they are upset by our success & earnings while their personal situations have not been so great. They want to place all the cost of our countries problems on backsides of more successful & wealthier folks. If you do this it will hurt job creation more and keep you potentially out of work longer. I'm sorry economics are bad right now but you will always have ups & downs. The worst thing you can do is panic and withdraw money from banks all at once while jacking up fees and taxes on rich & successful. Wisconsin couldn't have picked a worse time for a recall election because I think we're headed for a depression. We need leaders both locally and federal to cut spending and downsize before its too late.

According to the Urban Online Dictionary...
Verb - To "Scott Walker something" or screw it over, as in how Walker has screwed: education, public unions, collective bargaining, needed health care for many people, seniors, women, the working poor, the disabled, and the list goes on and on. It is funny how WI can be LAST in jobs lost and some people still support a college drop out as governor. Walker and K-fisch have been failureS in creating jobs with their policies. Walker has no degree from college, but feels the need to cut over $800 million dollars from public education. That is a $635 dollar cut per student. It is also time for Scotty to confess why he has set up a criminal defense fund if he has not no wrong in the FBI John Doe probe.

Bassman,
I don't think it can get much worse, though it will depend on the results of the election. In my opinion, if Walker should happen to win it will get much worse.
The conflict among friends and family members will elevate as will Walker's attacks on women, education, healthcare, public employees, elderly, and economically challenged; while he continues to do the bidding of corporations making empty promises to create jobs and the wealthy.
If the recall is successful, it will send a very strong and clear message to politicians at every level that the 99% has had enough and unless they make significant changes and start paying their fair share they better be ready to lose their JOB.
