Video: Walker explains divide, conquer strategy

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Friday, May 11, 2012 - 8:12 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. — Video shot by a filmmaker captures Gov. Scott Walker explaining a “divide and conquer” strategy against unions to a top campaign donor.

The video shows Beloit billionaire Diane Hendricks asking Walker in January 2011 whether he could make Wisconsin a “completely red state, and work on these unions, and become a right-to-work” state. Hendricks was referring to right-to-work laws which prevent private sector unions from making employees pay union dues if they choose not to join the union.

Walker told Hendricks the “first step” would be “to divide and conquer” through his budget adjustment bill, which cut collective bargaining for most public employee unions.

The Journal Sentinel says the documentary filmmaker, Brad Lichtenstein has worked for Democratic campaigns and has donated to Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Walker’s opponent in the June 5 recall election.

Walker and Hendricks what a match made in heaven. I hope they can cry together too when walker gets what he deserves! They both make me want to puke!Hendricks spends hundreds of thousands to back a man who lies and destroys her own state but and I know first hand, wont help some of her own family members who need it. Greedy, money hungry, dont care about anyone other than themselves! Of course some of you will say diane is a saint and has helped many. Walker has too right??? Pull your heads out of your butts people do a little research!

Seeing how Hendricks seems to loathe unions, its very possible unions are the only thing keeping her in check with her treatment of employees, lest they organize to join a union. Once unions are gone, there would be nothing stopping employers from treating their employees like disposable trash.

The more I read of the hate filled comments from the Left, the more I am sure Walker is doing right by the State. Talk about divide and conquer----What does the Left think it is doing here? Creating unity? A large portion of the comments are just repeats of what has been said over the last couple of years the only difference is the Headlines. What will the big topic be next week? Will it be based on fact or fiction?

nomore......It would depend completely on what the "corruption" is that were talking about. I haven't had the time or the inclination to look into what the left is screaming about, but if it's sending "please support me" emails out, regardless if it was done by someone on the left or the right, I could seriously care less. I use my work email all the time to send personal emails, as I suspect 99% of the population does. For me to chastise anyone for doing the same would be hypocritical. I'll probably get called out for saying that, but we have people in the Federal government that spend hundreds of thousands, if not millions of taxpayer dollars flying around the country campaigning, under the guise of doing their job, and we want to go after people for e-mails?? Same thing when Clinton got caught with his pants down(literally) with that fatty......I was totally irritated by the anti-Clinton crowd screaming for impeachment. The "incident" had no effect on his job performance, and who wouldn't have stretched the truth in a situation such as that ....:)

I am actually happy to hear you say that. I would hope that you might add that if he is found to be corrupt you would also rail against him. You are the first Walker supporter I can recall who has even suggested s/he would rail against him for any reason, so that is encouraging. I am voting more against Walker than for Barrett. I would have other preferences, but those will be the major choices. Walker and his administration have helped create a very hostile environment in WI, therefore, almost anyone would be better than he would be. You may like some of the things he has done and I may dislike how he has achieved those very same things. You and I can (and obviously do) disagree on the issues and how to approach them, but I at least respect your last response for supporting Walker (or not).

Tim Russell, Scott Walker's former Deputy Chief of Staff, has been arrested and charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor for stealing thousands of dollars intended for wounded veterans and families of military servicemembers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Kevin Kavanaugh, Scott Walker's appointee to a Veteran Service Commission, has been arrested and charged with five felonies related to the theft of funds from Operation Freedom.

Brian Pierick, Scott Walker's campaign aide and former operator of ScottWalker.org, has been arrested and charged with felony enticement of a child.

Kelly Rindfleisch, Scott Walker's personal fundraiser for his campaign and his former Deputy Chief of Staff, has been charged with four felonies for sending more than 1,000 campaign emails while supposedly working on the clock for taxpayers just 25 feet from Scott Walker's office.

Darlene Wink, Scott Walker's former Director of Constituent Services, has been convicted of two misdemeanors under a plea deal for planning campaigning fundraisers, including one with Sarah Palin, on taxpayer dime.

William Gardner, Scott Walker's close friend and campaign donor, was convicted of the largest campaign finance violation in Wisconsin history for illegally funneling more than $43,000 to Friends of Scott Walker

Instead of whining about how much money Hendricks has donated to Walker (her legal right), why don't you look into how many peoples lives have been raised by the jobs and the benefits the Hendricks have created. Starting with nothing and becoming a billionaire in Beloit Wisconson should be an inspiration to us all but for many people they are just a sign of greed and everything that's wrong in America. So many have the attitude that the rich are evil and are just trying to hose the rest of us from getting our food stamps, unemployment checks and welfare or forcing everone in min. wage jobs.

916, you asked Sarah the following: "Do you honestly think that anyone will all of the sudden go from supporting Walker to supporting a Democratic mayor who has governed a failing city for nearly a decade over an excerpt from a video shot over a year ago with a leading question asked by one of Walker's biggest contributors?" I would say that some will, but not those like you who will support Walker regardless of what he has done or what he will do, except when it begins affecting you negatively. And even then some of you will still support him because you're too proud to admit the error of your ways. The framing of your question to Sarah says everything one would need to know about those who think like you. You are at least making people wonder why they would support Walker when those like you are among his supporters.

The last four comments from etown, yada and Zoom go directly to my point about abruptly and awkwardly editing a video in the middle of someone's statement. If that few seconds of video cut by Brad Lichtenstein had been supportive of his argument, you can bet we'd have seen it. I simply want to see what he thinks we should NOT see.

(When an audio or video tape is entered as evidence in a court of law the entire recording becomes evidence; not one carefully selected excerpt. The reason for that rule should be obvious.)

The top .1% asking the Gov how he will "work on these unions" really means "how can you make it so I can exploit the great workers in this county so I can become more wealthy?" What motive is there for someone with that much wealth to push for right-to-work legislation? Right-to-work means more profits and, more importantly, more control over the workers.

Walker has already started the first part of the process by allowing police, fire, etc to NOT be included in Collective Bargaining. He would be quite happy to see worker against worker, much like the divisions he has already created in our state. Walker was also more than willing to consider putting troublemakers in with the Madison peaceful rallies. Keep in mind that IN WALKERS the RIGHT TO WORK STATE-->You will have lower pay, less benefits, less worker imput, unsafe working conditions, etc - Get ready to bow and say thank you to your boss as your check is handed to you.

Midnight_Ride plagiarized, "SEUI’s political action committee reported $70.4 billion in expenditures for the 2008 Obama campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics."

Midnight_Ride, first, you should learn how to correctly attribute items you quote that are not your own words. To do otherwise is plagiarism. Of course, the item you quoted originated with FOX News -- no surprise there! [ http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/05/... ] And, of course, FOX News made NO ATTEMPT to correct the obvious error in the amount given to Obama's campaign by the SEIU.

Secondly, you should know the numbers you quoted are GROSSLY IN ERROR, when the very SAME source clearly shows the total amount raised in 2008 by Obama and McCain COMBINED was slightly over $1.1 billion. [ http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/ ] You quoting misinformation and using a ridiculous number like $70.4 billion shows you have no concept of the amount of money being spent by presidential campaigns and did no fact-checking on it.

Hardtobelieve, Are you claiming victory in a primary Republicans did not have to go vote? Very rich.
Bottom line here is Scott Walker knew he was being filmed. He wasn't hiding anything and if you weren't hitting mute everytime his ads came up, you'd know he was doing this.
Recall talks were in the emails exposed in November by the left. So it didn't matter what or how Walker fixed the budget. They lost.period. ..Recall him.
Your poll is out of date to the new poll that came out today. Walker is up by 5% with 2% undecided.

Your math is a "little" fuzzy. The Democrats had 675,000 and Scooter had 625,000. And you forget that over 1,000,000 people signed the recall list. If you really think that 625,000 votes will win this, then we have an easy victory. The latest poll out of Marquette University shows Barrett ahead by 2% points. Keep thinking the way you do. That kitchen sink is being loaded up as you write.

It is sad that so many choose to stick to their party labels rather than see what is so obvious. You have done a great service to the masses by sharing your posts. SEUI’s political action committee reported $70.4 billion in expenditures for the 2008 Obama campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The Service Employees International Union, one of President Obama’s biggest supporters, is paying the Occupy's $4,000-a-month rent at the Institute for Policy Studies.

Not all Public Employees want to see their hard earned money being spent this way but had no choice until Gov. Walker was elected. No choice if they wanted to continue teaching.
If the Unions were so concerned about these members paying a small percent for benefits, they would resist giving 70 billion dollars away. 70 billion dollars is dues collected from union members that had no choice. Now they do.

Poorrichard, "divide and conquer" is a term for victory as you said the Democrats use it all the time. I think the issue here is Walker has been successful. The left has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at us. We were supposed to be dejected. They were suppose to control the Senate and Walker should be down in the recall polls.
Instead we see nearly as many votes for Walker as ALL of the Democrats in an election that didn't matter for us right now. Walker is up in the polls by the same exact number as 2010.

I guess they think they need to work up some sanctimony before the recall election. Is desperation creeping in? You can't really blame them for being at least somewhat desperate. I did not say that I -want- to be my brother's keeper. I am my brother's keeper. I also never said government should be your sugar daddy. I said government has certain responsibilities to every citizen.

I cannot remember who to credit this saying to. A great nation cannot be defeated from without, until it has defeated itself from within.

Walker's divide and conquer strategy is good for no one. There is a right way and a wrong way to conduct business.

Excellent point, dtb.

Thank you Tim, and everyone else who has always supported or respected me.

Here I am, explaining that I do believe unions have become corrupt and need reform (as opposed to complete disintegration). Yet, not a single Republican, or perhaps I should say outspoken supporter of Walker (that I am aware of) has publicly posted on this website that they agree. The unions are always their mortal enemy. And that is the problem with this election. Most Republicans are viewing it as Scott Walker vs The Evil Unions. That just is not so. That is a fantasy. It is not Scott Walker vs The Evil Unions. It is Scott Walker vs The United People of Wisconsin. Republican or Democrat, it should be clear that Walker is corrupt. If corruption is what you wish to fight, then do not throw your support behind Scott Walker. Do not vote for Scott Walker. Vote to return sanity to Wisconsin. We can solve our problems without telling half of our state their opinion doesn't matter. Yes, this state has always been divided on how to approach dilemmas. However, we've never before been so polarized that we could not come to some sort of consensus and work together to face our challenges.

Once again - he thought he was talking to one of the rich Koch brothers. 1. The money is there for schools..just need to reform the way we teach....get unions out of the way...they don't want to improve and they don't want others to improve it..the US spends more per pupil than many other countries but we achieve mediocre results..

2. I got my healthcare for my family and I.....not sure why it's my business to worry who has healthcare or not.....

3. Real problems?.....everyone has real problems..some choose to bathe in their misery while others confront adversity by getting up every time they get knocked down.....some can't and I understand that but many won't do it..they need politicians to spoon feed their way into success with welfare...
============

1. Why are you making this into a unions are either good or evil issue? I agree that unions need reform. I do not support eliminating the unions. Fix the unions, fix the school. Destroy the unions for your own conservative agenda, polarize the state. There are often multiple ways to solve a problem. Scott Walker's way has nothing to do with fixing education, and has everything to do with pushing a conservative agenda. Get rid of Walker, then we can focus on fixing our problems.

2. Health care should be something that is provided to everyone. If you can afford premium health care you should receive it. If you cannot afford health care, then you get the standard that is available for everyone. There is no reason we should tell people they are completely on their own. I agree that it is good to motivate people, but you cannot just leave people completely unprotected. The health care system in this nation is a joke. It needs to be fixed. Just because you have been privileged or lucky does not mean there is no problem. Don't ignore the problem, fix it.

3. Real problems, question mark? Do you think there are not real issues we are facing, as a state? A drill instructor once gave a great demonstration. He held up a pencil and said, "This pencil represents one recruit. By yourself, I can easily snap you and destroy you." He snapped the pencil. Then he held up a fist full of pencils. The purpose of the demonstration was to show that if we come together and work toward a common goal, we can accomplish great tasks. Scott Walker does not want us to come together. He wants to pick and choose so he can snap us one by one. The Republican way is every man, woman, and child for himself. We need to come together and face our problems. My neighbor's problem is my problem too. I am my brother's keeper.

Well, we all know how promising a future in aviation is, don't we? Learning to fly is a novelty. Some of these kids may do something with it, most kids probably won't. What about our schools? Health care? What about REAL problems? I don't see the aviation community complaining about a lack of skilled pilots.

Spare the rhetoric. I don't care if some kids don't get a free ride to learn how to fly, when we have several more important issues to address first.

Many conservatives preach fiscal responsibility. Where is the fiscal responsibility in teaching kids how to fly? Are they going to buy their own airplanes, even though they couldn't pay for flying lessons? What about fuel? Planes use a lot more fuel than cars (obviously). But it's okay, just this once, because you are attacking the actions of a liberal, right?

You are right, LibertyBelle. Same stuff, different day. Same Republicans refusing to wake up and smell the coffee. Same Republicans blindly following their dear leader. Same Republicans, see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Why not grow some courage and take a good, long, hard look at the facts.

John Doe investigation.

Scott Walker complains about outside interests rearing their noses in Wisconsin politics, but about 2/3 of his $25 million donations come from out of state.

Scott Walker lied about eliminating collective bargaining while campaigning in 2010, and now lies saying everyone knew what he was doing.

Scott Walker tells about half of the state their opinion doesn't matter, winning by about 100,000 votes gives him a mandate.

Scott Walker tells one of his major supporters the plan is to divide and conquer, then tells Wisconsin he has made a modest proposal and wants us to work together.

Scott Walker manufactures a fiscal crisis to give him the authority to push a non-fiscal conservative agenda.

Scott Walker leads Wisconsin backwards, worst, worst state in job creation in 2011.

Scott Walker makes deepest education cuts the state has ever seen.

Scott Walker polarizes the state like never before (divide and conquer mission: accomplished).

Take off the blinders. This election isn't Scott Walker vs Union Corruption. While Republican chickens run around with their heads cut off saying if a Democrat is elected the sky will fall, Republicans are lighting the state on fire. The sky certainly is falling under Scott Walker. There is no logical reason to support him. Even if you don't normally vote Democrat, clearly Scott Walker is not the right choice.

916 your argument is completely irrational. First, it’s totally against union interests to force businesses to close. No workers; no union. Second, there are two competing interests that require representation; workers and business. The only reason unions exist is because business owners/managers took advantage of workers. Seven people sacrificed their lives in Bay View WI so ALL workers could enjoy a 40 hour work week. There are plenty of business organizations that lobby both local and federal legislators in their efforts to tilt the playing field to suit their interests. Workers deserve to have the same option. The ONLY valid reason to eliminate unions and limit their collective bargaining rights is to allow businesses to take advantage of workers. Walker essentially admits as much in the video.

To those of you who continue to push that Tom Barrett has pushed Milwaukee backwards. My question to you (that I'd love an actual answer to - please no rhetoric) is: Who was the Milwaukee County Executor from 2002-2010? Does he play no role in Milwaukee's stats?

Just curious?

You can storm the Capitol, you can leave the state for Illinois, you can threaten small Union Grove businsses, you can boycott all the businesses you want, you can run a 2 second clip of Walker bringing surplus back to the Great state of Wisconsin and call it a lie, you can dress in pink dresses and chain your heads to gallery bars, you can dress like a zombie, you can yell shame all you want.
WALKER BEAT BARRETT BY 5 POINTS IN 2010. WALKER IS BEATING BARRETT BY 5 POINTS AS OF THIS WEEK WITH ONE 2% UNDECIDED.
..WHAT HAS CHANGED FOR YOU?
We are forking out millions for these recalls and what has changed except Wisconsin will now have a surplus.
We should be thanking the Democrats for highlighting ACT 10 and it's great reforms.

Ms. Hendricks did not become a billionaire without workers. She would not have been successful without workers. She doesn't need to be on a pedestal. Why do these ultra-rich need to donate huge sums of money to politicians? A million dollars certianly could have paid for several school teachers or fed hungry families.

I used to be proud that Rock County could boast such a successful business run by self made people. I no longer feel that way. When you use your money to " divide and conquer" and try to bring down the hard working people of the entire state, you merit no such adulation. The right wing branch of the Republican party has demonstrated a lack of respect for the common man. To contribute to this type of thinking, quite frankly, stinks.

MadeinUSA - Great Idea, boycot an event they sponsor that is designed to give under privelaged kids a chance to get their pilots license! Your character shows right through doesn't it? So what exactly do you do for the community other than complain on a local papers website? Diane's way out of your league when it comes to community service!

I also read a post that she needs to start paying her fair share of taxes too! I'd be willing to bet in one day she pays more taxes between her personal and all of her businesses then most on here including their entire family trees will in a life time! What you forget is when her companies pay taxes, that too is her money! But the left doesn't want you to think of their businesses paying taxes as their money so you think the middle class is paying all the taxes for the country.

The wage gap between men and women in the United States is 32 percent. it is only 5 percent between union men and women

Right-to-work laws disproportionately harm people of color. Hispanic and Latino union members earn 45 percent more and African-Americans who are in unions see salaries 30 percent higher than African-Americans that are not in unions

The more workers that are unionized, the higher the wages that employers will offer, even to non-union workers, since workers are less willing to accept substandard wages

Higher wages mean more money is spent by working families, boosting the economy and leading to lower unemployment numbers

Higher rates of unionism lead to increases in productivity in both union jobs and non-union jobs, as employers must bring in new technology, new techniques and better training in order to attract better workers

Employers frequently offer higher wages to workers in order to prevent them from organizing a union, meaning that even the presence of unions and the possibility of their existence in a workplace increases wages

Right-to-work laws undercut unionized businesses in the states where they exist because non-union businesses can offer cheaper goods and services by exploiting their workers

Right-to-work laws interfere with employer-worker contracts by limiting what the two sides can engage in. These laws don't encourage freedom, they restrain it for all involved, placing the 'wisdom' of conservative politicians over that of both employers and workers

•Federal law already prohibits any American from being forced to join a union. Since this is almost the only argument that conservatives put forth in supporting right-to-work laws, and it's 100 percent false, what is the real motivation for these laws?

Right-to-work laws don't grant any rights, they simply weaken unions

Federal law also prohibits unions from using member or non-member fees from paying for activities that might violate the political or religious beliefs of the worker

These laws allow workers who do not pay union dues to obtain the same benefits, including legal representation from unions, as union members without paying for them

Workers (union and non-union) in right-to-work states make more than $5,000 a year less, on average, than in other states.

States without right-to-work laws have healthier tax bases, which leads to better government programs and educational systems

Because unions lead in the fight to ensure safety and health standards for all workers, laws that weaken unions also weaken these standards. The workplace death rate is 51 percent higher in right-to-work states

Without strong unions to fight for benefits for workers, right-to-work states have 21 percent more people without health insurance

The infant mortality rate in right-to-work states is 16 percent higher

Without strong unions to fight for better wages for all workers, the poverty rate in right-to-work states is 2.3 percent higher

Right-to-work states offer a maximum weekly worker compensation benefit $30 less than other states

Right-to-work laws disproportionately harm women. Union women, on average, earn $149 more per week than non-union women

why_think, those numbers are very deceiving. When you're making $6 an hour, $8.40 and hour becomes a 40% increase in personal income. When you're on the bottom, percentages look rosy with penny increases. The only reason to be against unions is to steal power and earnings away from people. The steady decline in unions corresponds with the steady decline in wages and in our general decline.

As of today there are 22 right-to-work states and 28 union-shop states. Over the past decade (2000-09) the right-to-work states grew faster in nearly every respect than their union-shop counterparts: 54.6% versus 41.1% in gross state product, 53.3% versus 40.6% in personal income, 11.9% versus 6.1% in population, and 4.1% versus -0.6% in payrolls.

The kai......I respectfully disagree.......That might have been their original intention, but they have evolved into organizations which cripple companies, rather than advancing them. The success of a company ultimately will depend on it's workforce. Take the companies Diane Hendricks owns for example. They are hugely successful, consistently win great workplace awards, employee retention is not an issue and people are lining up for an opportunity to work there. Not a union in sight........Successful companies will continue to be successful if their workforces are treated right, throwing an antiquated power structure like a union into the mix, will only hinder the companies that are doing it right. A company that treat their employees like they're worthless is bound to fail regardless of whether or not it is unionized......

Happy2BAlive, Thank you for that video. It is a shining example of what Pres. Obama has done to Janesville, Detroit, Los Angeles, pick any city you want in the USA.
It's a good example of how the Democrats fled from their duties as elected representatives. How the teachers closed down the schools and kids education and how the 15% of this state want to dictate how much MORE money the 85% should shell out for them.
It's a great reminder that I pay for my healthcare. And a lot more percentage then they are still paying for theirs. At least the ones whose jobs were saved by Reforms.

From the JS article linked above:
The entire conversation was not released Thursday with a video trailer of the documentary, but Journal Sentinel reporters were allowed to view the raw footage.

"So for us," the governor continues, "the base we get for that is the fact that we've got - budgetarily we can't afford not to. If we have collective bargaining agreements in place, there's no way not only the state but local governments can balance things out. . . . That opens the door once we do that. That's your bigger problem right there."

He goes on to talk about curbing liability lawsuits and government regulations.

916WI,
Unions are supposed to thrive off of working with management to ensure fair compensation for fair work. I agree that unions have evolved to something less honorable, but I disagree that it means we should completely get rid of unions.

Did you know that in Germany unions are constitutionally protected? Yet Germany remains the fourth strongest economy in the world (after The United States, China, and Japan), and the most powerful economic engine in Europe.

I don't think unions are the problem. Corruption is the problem. And Scott Walker is far worse than our unions in that category.

Love it or hate it when Diane Hendricks talks the governor listens. Nobody has been a bigger supporter and investor in Rock County than Hendricks. I suppose next we'll find out Ms. Hendricks has donated tons of money to Walker. It all seems to have a certain bit of thug element to this. I mean a thug is defined as someone who treats others roughly, often for hire. Well I'm sure kaysbrew, RAF, 916, bebe and the gang will all agree that this behavior is unacceptable.
