Economists say new jobs numbers more accurate

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Wednesday, May 16, 2012 - 9:56 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Economists say new jobs numbers being reported by Gov. Scott Walker's administration are a more accurate reflection of how the state is doing.

But even if the figures released Wednesday are accurate, the 23,300 jobs created in 2011 are far from the 62,500 needed per year for Walker to meet his 2010 campaign pledge to create 250,000 by 2015.

And the new figures cover both private and public jobs while Walker's promise was only for public sector jobs.

Still, the new numbers based on a census of Wisconsin employers instead of a much smaller survey show a net gain of 23,300 jobs instead of a loss of 33,900 jobs.

University of Wisconsin-Madison economist Andrew Reschovsky says the data is more accurate. Wells Fargo Fund Management economist Brian Jacobsen agrees.

I'm not exempt from this sites policies and appreciate that the Gazette offers a forum for discussion. I have never registered, or used, any username other than poobah on this site. One can offer no proof they are using only one username in an anonymous forum of this type; nor can a person offer any proof to support their claim of people using multiple usernames. This is what makes people claiming others are using multiple usernames so hilarious and worthy of note.

The same principle, of course, applies to the fact that others can offer no proof that they served in the Air Force on this anonymous forum.

RAFs link from an OPINION column in the post on 5/14 but todays post has an article in the politics page:
""A day after Wisconsin Democrats aired their frustrations with the national party, the Democratic Governors Association announced that another $700,000 was sent last week to fund a Greater Wisconsin ad buy and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) has announced a trip to the state to campaign with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Barrett faces Gov. Scott Walker (R) on June 5. (Update: The $700,000 is included in the DGA’s already-announced $2 million investment.)""

This is all snake oil, an illusion. In 2008 the republicans were swept out because of the massive financial crisis that happened on the watch of 6 years of total republican rule. FAILURE, epic failure. In 2010 the republicnas spent all the money they could to convince successfully the people that it wasnt their fault. Now here we are and the stupid American public is once again left to vote for one or the other , they both lie, cheat , and steal their way to the top and they continue to get all of their sheep in the pasture to eat it up.
Feel sorry for democrats? I feel sorry for anyone that thinks a political party will solve any of this nations problems. They wont they will just sell out to the highest bidder, and mark my words one of those bidders works hard to convince you that they care about you and your plight. Republicans dont want "smaller" government. They want government that covers their priorities.

Anyone care to address the FACT that the current Health care law that everyone seems to hate so much and labeled as the socialistic nightmare, was a republican Idea? Born at the Heritage foundation???
Who I feel most sorry for is the majority of Americans who stick to a poitical party and follow it lie a religion, that is what has caused the downfall of this once great nation, and will in the end be our undoing.

Rude by stating facts? Sorry if you take the context of factual arguments as rude. I would say that blaming poverty in Minorities on Democtats is rude wouldnt you? I woould say blaming democrats for out of control spending is rude wouldnt you? I would say that both parties are equally responsible for all the problems in this nation. I enjoy the republicans who say they want smaller government , EXCEPT in cases of their own ideas of what is and what isnt moral. Then go ahead and make laws to control other peoples life. Make statements like "This is a Christian nation" to justify YOUR version of large government.
The FACT is that no matter how you want to calculate jobs numbers, Wisconsin is in LAST place since Walkers election, NOT entirely his fault, but certainly cannot absolve his "divide and conquer" strategy of any and all blame. I want Wisconsin to be great , I love it here. I do not however wish to balance budgets on the backs of the most important civil servants to build 25 more Wal marts and claim job creation. Maybe that is the republican dream for my once great state in a once great nation , but I see it much differently.
I am sorry if you see me as rude I am actually a quite nice person. I just stand srong for what I believe to be true. I am far from the rudest of the posters oin these boards, but useret you would fail to see the rudeness in those you agree with because well you agree with them.

Global economy means lower wages for unskilled or even no jobs. The sooner everyone figures that out and makes a plan to become skilled the better we will all be. The Feds need to draft a (Made In The USA) legislation that extends tax breaks to corporations for moving back to the USA. Only then will things change and yes it will mean other countries doing the same to us. The Wal-Mart low cost imports from China is the grease on the slide off the cliff for the American worker.

These are a couple of examples of some more wishy-washy opinions of the professor depending on his own perception of his security. So let us not put so much stock in revised numbers and less than trustworthy people making statements. And again even with these revisions of numbers we still rank DEAD LAST!! Congrats on winning the race to the Bottom Sott and bBecky!! Keep twisting budget and job numbers all you like not gonna change 1 mind on June 5th, time to face tthe music. Enough polls, enough twisting and turning , enough dumb ads against Tom Barrett and his Milwaukee record during the Global economic crisis, that Scott Walker is equally responsible for. The ads against Kathy Falk were relating unemployment and job loss to her as county executive but Walker as a county executive is like teflon? Really? This is getting so inconsiustent and hysterical its almost funny to watch how almost religious the supporters are.

I love, love , love how the unemployment rate being what it is in Wisconsn is due to newly inflated job numbers suspiciously pushed out quickly by the Gov? Yet when it comes to national job numbers and unemployment rate its because people are leaving the workforce and its all Obamas fault. I swear this game of political scoreboard watching is sick. The double standards here are almost unfathomable.
Blaming Doyle for the massive job loss during a Global economic crisis is absolutely hilarious!! I grow tired of the inconsistencies of so many on these boards. One of the people in this article touting the accuracy of these numbers is a wells-fargo fund manager? That made me laugh so hard I am still laughing now!! The only folks I trust less than the Walker cult, might be hedge fund managers. Who else could post a 2 billion dollar trading loss and still keep their 25 million dollar a year job? Ask the CEO of JP morgan. And some of you criticize teachers for not living in the "real world"? Is that your real world?

All of you repubs can tout every poll you want, Walker can spend all the money he wants, he already has , and this race is all dependant on who turns out, no matter how many fake inflated numbers the Walker cult twists and turns in their favor, it wont change the minds of ANY voters , none!! Walker may win this race in the end, but he will be forever damaged because of it, and so will this state. His mark on Wisconsin will never be a positive one. He doesnt care about anyone other than wealthy donors, if you believe otherwise your a sucker. Regardless of any poll this race will be exteremely close. I also contend that as long a the Senate is taken away from his rubber stamp dictatorship then we can see if Scott Walker can do anything other than travel all over the nation speking to tea party groups. Then maybe he can govern instead of dictate.

When the national unemployment (Obama's) rate went down, the RW loons claimed it was because millions of people dropped out of the workforce or are no longer claiming UC benefits. But when Wisconsin's lower unemployment rate drops despite losing jobs, it's because of the great job Scott Walker is doing. Is lying contagious?

As one other poster put it, if all the state's use Walker's calculator, Wisconsin would still finish 50th in jobs growth. Unfortunately.

midnight - you can twist all you want up and down. I moved to this state not to long ago, opened my bussiness here from AZ. I had 34 employees, I now have 28 not because I had to let 6 go, they had to move to different states so their husbands could find jobs. I lost over 30 customers, again because they had to move to different states for work when GM, Leer, LSI, the Gap, Damons and so on closed.
Now shall I go from my bussiness to my personal life? Seventeen families from my church had to move to different states, many moving back into one of their parents homes with their kids because they have lost their jobs and can't find work in WI that supports a family in middleclass. My brother had to move two states over when he was laid off, my daughter and her family 3 states over, my best friend and her family 3 states over. The big kicker NONE of these people worked for GM. They all had non-union jobs.
So that is the sole reason I want walker recalled. He promised jobs, they didn't come. I lost just about all the people I lived in WI for and I believed walker when he said he would 'fix' WI with his brown paper bag. He has 'fixed' nothing for the people only corps and corrupt friends with my tax dollars. As soon as I can sell our house and my bussiness I will join my family and friends 3 states over because walker has lied about his 'fixing' WI plain, simple and easy to understand.

Well, according to that "liberal rag" Forbes magazine, the Gov's new stats are self inflated crap. I guess I'll believe them over some fruitcake economy professor who probably has to have his nose surgically removed from Scooter's backside.

Midright-ride, stop parroting Walker's State Dept of Workforce Development and Bureau of Labor Statisics as being the golden rule for facts and figures. Believe me, you don't need any more help in your foolishness.

Okay, I can see the left is too blindsided to see or think straight if they think Walker is counting.
By federal law, okay? Federal law the entire work force must be counted. Not estimated with surveys of only 3%.
Too bad the left is so completely uneducated about this.
One would think that is the hopes of Democrat leaders.

wiggle, Walker's numbers could by better if not for Barrett. And, of course, as I already posted, Walker's numbers will help Obama.
No hyprocrisy, no spin. Look it up yourself.

All of this revising by the Governor. He's been revising data for over a year now and still doesn't have it right. I think it proves just one thing -- the Governor can't count jobs correctly!

How can the state trust a man who promises he'll create 250,000 jobs when he can't even count jobs correctly?

Estimated from survey of 3% can be very wrong and usually is throughout the year.
These final numbers by federal law has to be submitted by employers of all their work force by May 16th each year.

This, of course, could help Pres. Obama in the nationwide numbers if it weren't for states like Illinois and California.

Midnight_ride, facts are facts. You're funny. It's highly unusual for a state to release there own jobs data before it is reviewed and officially released by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau's numbers are scheduled to publish during the last week of June, several weeks after the recall. That means there will be yet another revision. Facts are facts. The fact is, Walker is a serial liar and can't be trusted.

23,300 in 2011/ but how many were lost in 2011? Walker only knows had to add not subtract.
All I had to do was look up 'jobs in WI in 2011' and just the first page was insane!
12,500 lost in July
2,300 lost in Aug
9,700 lost in sept
so how do you get "net gain of 23,300 jobs instead of a loss of 33,900" when in just three months 24,000 people lost their jobs?
There were NO major findings to support a "net gain of 23,300 jobs".
Walker should have stayed in school, it is apparent he can't figure out addition and subtraction equals the REAL answer.

Facts are facts. They go hand in hand with the 6.8% unemployment rate.
Imagine that Wisconsin could be the lowest unemployment state in the nation if it weren't for Tom Barrett and his city of Milwaukee where they have 10.4%.

Tom Barrett, do you still want to talk about jobs? You lose on that issue too.

The complaining left should then go back and look at the surveys. Back to the 1960's the surveys orginally that come out are always incorrect and adjusted upward. Always, they are just surveys of 3% of the work force.
These May numbers are the correct numbers and not the survey numbers.
Please educate yourselves. You look foolish.

"Dresser further points out that even if we were to go along with Walker’s preferred metrics, despite their being completely out of synch with the remainder of the country, we simply end up “dancing around zero.” While the Establishment Survey puts the numbers of jobs lost slightly below zero, the alternative survey preferred by the Walker people puts them just above zero. At the end of the day, we’re talking about zero job growth—even under Walker’s favored, if completely unorthodox, approach."

Walker's idea of Job creation:

Take one secretary who makes 35,000 a year and 60,000 total with benefits.

Fire her. That would be -1 job

Now hire 3 people working part time making only 20,000 a year and no benefits. That is +3 jobs.

That's a net job growth of +2 jobs! Just ignore the fact that the 3 people hired are still making poverty level income and the one that was fired is now jobless.

"Thank you, Scott Walker!" For what? He, like most politicians, can't come anywhere close to keeping a campaign promise and the numbers are FAR from what he campaigned on. I hope none of these "new" jobs are anywhere near Milwaukee, as that would make things look good for Barrett.
