Walker, Barrett trade jabs over crime statistics

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker and his recall challenger, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, traded jabs Thursday over a media report that questions whether Milwaukee police misrepresented crime statistics.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel found at least 500 cases in which aggravated assaults had been misclassified as lesser assaults. The newspaper is still awaiting records that involve 800 similar cases to see whether those were misclassified as well.

If the 500 incidents been classified properly, the violent-crime rate last year would have risen 1.1 percent from the previous year’s figures, instead of falling 2.3 percent as the police department had reported.

Walker quickly turned the report into a campaign attack, saying it raised serious questions about the way Barrett has managed the city of Milwaukee.

“He claimed (the) drop in the violent-crime rate was an example of his leadership,” the Republican governor said. “I think it is a legitimate question now that we know that the violent-crime rate went up.”

Walker joined other officials in calling for an independent audit of the crime numbers.

Barrett said any crime statistics that were wrong would be corrected. He also said there was no allegation that the numbers had been deliberately manipulated.

The mayor credited the police department for requesting its own audit from the federal government last year and said he expected the results would be available within about a month.

“I am certainly going to look at that and see what steps are necessary after that,” Barrett said. “But I applaud my police department for asking for this audit. This was not something that they had to do.” The competing news conferences came one day before the candidates were scheduled to meet for the first of two debates ahead of the June 5 election.

The Journal Sentinel report also comes on the heels of a poll by St. Norbert College and Wisconsin Public Radio that found Walker holding a slight lead, 50 percent to 45 percent, with 5 percent undecided. The poll of 406 likely voters was conducted between May 17 and Tuesday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

An earlier poll released last week by the Marquette University Law School showed Walker slightly ahead of Barrett 50-44, with a 4.1 percentage point margin of error.

Thanks for your suggestion. Don't have time to find the slide she shows; Just look at her slide of major funders for campaigns in 2010. This is not opinion, it is just who funds what. It adds rationale as to why GOP would want to destroy unions.

I do prefer intelligent discourse.

Kids...... If you want to get anyone in an argument with anyone about Walker, or politics in general, do not quote or reference anything dealing with Rachel Maddow. I have seen people rip apart the likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and other conservative mouth pieces, and to tout Maddow's reports, words or stories as fact and gospel is narrow focused and niave. It's like quoting Chris Matthews or George Soros and it is too partisan to hold any weight. If you want to have an intelligent conversation on Walker, the Union Bill, and the Recall, find a factual source that isn't infused with so much partisan rhetoric as to disqualify it as a reputable source. Anything mainstream media will not cut it.

916w -- the protests would never have grown so large if the GOP had been willing to meet the people half-way with compromise. It was in their power to make us all disappear, just by backing down on a radical stance. The unions offered to make financial concessions in exchange for maintaining collective bargaining. . . . No this is not about money or union rights, it is about destroying the financial base for Democratic candidates. Watch this and let me know if I am misguided. You'll need real facts, not just a sharp tongue or volume or intimidation. . .

Nice link kids.... http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html

Just one problem though....... How many people in Washington can be described in that same link?? Do you remember the email string that came from a summary of allegations of Congress starting back in 1999? I believe it went something like this.

29 members of Congress have been accused of spousal abuse
7 have been arrested for fraud
53 have personal and financial problems so severe they would be denied security clearances by the DOD or DOE if they had to apply through normal channels
19 have been accused of writing bad checks
117 have bankrupted at least 2 businesses
3 have been arrested for assault
71 have credit reports so bad they can’t qualify for a credit card
14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
8 have been arrested for shoplifting
21 are current defendants in lawsuits

IN 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving, but released after they claimed Congressional Immunity. And these are the People who make the laws that we MUST obey? Our tax dollars hard at work!

Must be a prerequisite to be crazy to be in politics..... TRUTH........ Term limits. Get rid of them all and start over from scratch!

kidsfirst....this says it all....quote: "While urging a judge to scale back protests, a state Department of Administration official said the state Capitol sustained $7.5 million in damage. State officials could not immediately provide a basis for the number, and later backtracked from it. The new estimate: $347,500, some 20 times less than the original one. And there are indications that even that could be high."

"This smells like an effort to pour gas on the anti-protester fire. The claim was ridiculously high. And that gets a Pants on Fire rating."

It is just more of Walkers fuzzy math if you ask me.

which liar? Barratt did not write the report & submit it. He will stand by corrections if needed.
Now Walker --1) is on video tape with Frederica Freiburg saying the he will not go after public education, yet slashed funding $1.6 billion. 2) on video tape telling Dianne Hendricks "we will divide and conquer" unions, 3) claimed the restoration of the capital would be in the millions of dollars,http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2011/mar/08/mike-huebsch/wisconsin-officials-claim-cleaning-state-capitol-w/ 4) insisted that destroying collective bargaining rights was necessary to balance the budget -- later has to admit to a federal panel that it did not have a fiscal impact on the budget, 5) is using "his" numbers to claim that WI has had a job gains--knowing that he is not using the standard measuring tool -- so it is apples to oranges, 6) complains of all the out of state money coming in to back his recall while he has collected over $25 million for his campaign with the magority of those funds coming form out of state (why does the casino owner in Vegas care about Walker's position??) 7) allowed media to portray the protestors as violent, when he knew they were mostly loud, 8) has increased spending for his own security, drained budgets to provide security from other agencies ---never once did he downplay the media portrayal. Then closing the Capitol brought this http://understory.ran.org/2011/02/25/bre... We even have him on tape as thinking about planting some trouble makers. . . . The list is easy enough to continue.
``````````
When we hear lies again and again, after a while they begin to sound true. Walker fits this profile: http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html
`````````
I don't like/respect the policies he represents, the legislation written by ALEC and imposed on WI, and I am disgusted that anyone in this state would stand behind a person for Governor who has lied, misled, and schmoozed his way into power to the extent that he projects his own lack of character onto his opponents.

Walker did NOT BALANCE THE BUDGET. Walker has created a huge problem for local cities with his math - almost forgot to say - the guy was unable to finish college. All Walker has done is to shift the burden to the cities and counties in WI. Don't forget the Walker lies on Collective Bargaining - Walker did NOT campaign on the issue. THERE is also ANOTHER VIDEO just BEFORE HIS ELECTION where Walker states tha t he would work with unions. Walker was interviewed by editorial board of Oshkosh newspaper and YEP - it's all caught on video. Walker talks about sitting down and working with unions like he did in Milwaukee. Walker said that he would "negotiate" with unions - Mr DIVIDE & CONQUER has shown in both videos that he has a problem with the truth.

I can't trust a poll any more than I can shake a stick at. I can't Trust the news to be fair and balances any more than the scales of Justice where money is involved. I can't trust a politician any further than the latest false promise given and the latest attack on their opponent. And I can't trust any political ad whether endorsed by a candidate or created by some creatively named association that I've never heard of before. It is just relentless the garbage that is spewed in the name of government these days.

"...which liar they want to vote for, Walker or Barrett."

"...LESS government is what we all need.."

I respectfully disagree that all politicians are liars and the LESS government is what we need. We certainly are seeing an increase in people who over-promise or sell out to big money after taking office. We just lost a good honest Republican when Sen. Lugar was defeated by a Tea Party hardliner so now that will be offset by a left wing hardliner somewhere and we will go no where even faster. Regarding LESS government, I beleive we need effective government and if that is less government, so be it. If it is more government, so be it. We can reduce government so much that the less money that we do spend will be even more wasted. It is that simple.

The REAL question that the voters will have to decide on June 5th, 2012 is which liar they want to vote for, Walker or Barrett.

In my opinion neither one will accomplish anything. Until we wake up as a society and decide LESS government is what we all need, things will stay the same. The rich getting richer and the poor staying poor. End of story.

Libertybelle: Wrong, there is an ad where Barrett hammers Walker about his term as Milwaukee County Exec. Citing an increase in unemployment of 34% and debt increase of 85%. Barrett ends the ad by saying he will do several things as Governor AND put Wisconsin FIRST. Everyone keeps forgetting that Walker was county exec during a great portion of Barretts term as mayor. Walker's record is worse than Barretts.

From Scott Walker's website: “If you elect me as your next Governor, I’ll get government out of the way and lower the tax burden so Wisconsin business owners and factories can create 250,000 jobs and 10,000 businesses in our state by 2015.” [ http://www.scottwalker.org/press-release... ]

saxcat70, it only stands that the longer Wisconsin job growth is near zero, Walker is up against the wall of historical post-recession job recovery statistics. Wisconsin added an average of 5,371 jobs per month coming out of the 1990 recession. This number is typical of the job recovery after the 1981 and 2001 recessions as well. And it's quite obviously one number Walker was basing his promise on for recovering from the 2007 recession: 5,371 jobs per month X 4 years in office = 257,808 jobs. [ http://www.cows.org/pdf/ds-WIJobWatch-Se... ]

By any measure, Walker is far off pace to achieve his promise. And the longer his policies retard job growth, the less realistic it is that he could achieve his promise. He had 48 months to add 250,000 jobs (5,208 jobs per month). If not recalled or removed from office, he now has 32 months to add 244,100 jobs (7,628 jobs per month). That means has to outperform previous post-recession monthly job growth figures by 42% and his own projection by 46%. Dream on.

250,000 jobs was a GOAL after first term. Of course we had no idea the Democrats, unions and out of state organizations would throw a complete and unhinged tantrum and cost our state another 17 million in recalls and halt mining bills and hold up everything in the courts.
How did we know that the majority who won the election was completely dismissed by left wing radicals.

May I suggest he ought to be laying out a plan of his own that addresses the problems in WI that Walker took on. If Barrett and the democrats do not care for Walker's direction then what does Barrett propose to do? What are his plans? Since the beginning his specific plans have been zip. He has run completely on the "I'm not Walker" platform. That will resonate with some voters but not enough. In order to win he needs to have substance to his message which unfortunately Tom Barrett has always lacked. He's a nice guy and an empty suit, not really what Wisconsin needs right now nor will an empty suit be able to take on Walker. I really think most democrats were looking for a dynamic candidate and if they had somebody who could lay out a viable alternative plan to address the fiscal situation in WI my guess is the race would be much different.
