MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Preliminary data from the state Department of Natural Resources shows hunters killed nearly 244,000 deer during Wisconsin’s nine-day gun season.

The DNR’s tally showed hunters killed 243,739 deer between Nov. 17 and Nov. 26. That’s up 7.7 percent from last year’s preliminary count of 226,260 deer. The final count for the 2011 season was 257,511 deer.

The DNR said 633,460 people bought a license in 2012, up from 621,375 last year. According to the preliminary count, 2012 hunters killed 114,822 bucks, up 12 percent from a year ago.

Officials said seven people were shot during the hunt. One died.

Mouse - Actually, we only harvest mature bucks and a select number of does to better manage or area. Bambi is a fawn and under the past Doyle administration and "earn a buck", there were more yearling does and young nubbin bucks killed than ever. This lasted for almost a decade where we are at. I remember all your Walker rants sometime ago. Then he won, then he won again in the recall and you fell off the earth with your comments. Glad to see you are back. Things must be lonely at the cheesy factory.

Just wondering why this article was on "Walworth County Today" and not here.

Imagine that...take away earn a buck and the numbers go up. Glad it was a success for many. I know it was our best year to date between bow and gun hunting. Mouse, please do some research on the subject. You are way off on your assumption.

Took my son out for his first time ever and we hunted all 9 days. Sadly didn't even see anything. Here's hoping the gun holiday season gives us better luck to at least SEE something.

Mouse - Why does this have to be about Walker? If I recall several years ago when I believe Doyle was in office, the DNR pretty much opened up the killing fields of any/all deer because CWD was going to end the world! When in the end, all it did was hurt the deer population with all the different hunts they had.
Bassman - Good luck getting the couple extra deer to give to the needy families. I gave the doe I shot to my neighbor because he depends on venison to feed his family and I eat it because I like it. I did however request the back straps!

I really don't care about your negativity , I buy my license's every year and shoot what I need. It's my right. The feeling of giving to people in need is awesome, you should try it sometime.
