Wis. election head disagrees with Romney

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin’s election chief tells Mitt Romney’s campaign that he will not seek a court order to extend the deadline for military and overseas voters to return their ballots.

Romney’s campaign on Monday asked the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board to extend it after some ballots were mailed passed the Sept. 22 deadline.

Wisconsin elections chief Kevin Kennedy says in a response letter made public Thursday that 37 ballots were affected and all have been transmitted to voters in time for them to be completed, returned and counted.

Kennedy says the state has been working with the U.S. Justice Department on the issue.
Romney’s campaign raised similar complaints in Vermont, Mississippi and Michigan.

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams says the campaign is still considering taking legal action against Wisconsin over the issue.

ms_sassy_wi, This is no joking matter, so no - I'm not "kidding" you.
Why won't the GAB extend the deadline when they failed to get out ballots? Not just in Wisconsin.
I don't want to hear another Left side of the aisle talk to me about disenfranchise.
Voter ID is to protect our system. The Military protects our freedom. Liberals want to take both away.

If Kevin Kennedy made a mistake, how exactly is that Obama's fault/responsibility? Seems like a State of Wisconsin issue.

And it's not like anyone isn't getting a ballot - a few people will get them a couple of days later than they were supposed to. It's still earlier than they used to get them under the old way. Seems they still will have time like 4 weeks or so) to return them. How long does it take to fill in a circle and stick it back in the mail?

yes, they should get those ballots in time and get an extension... but we know the "outrage" is only because they are assuming these will be right wing votes...

We have a president who should be apologizing to our military, and hanging his head in shame for allowing this situation to continue year after year.

SHAME on Barack Obama, he does not deserve to be the CIC.

Bowlgal, The SECOND comment was from someone from "left of center" saying it's wrong that those serving do not get an extension, should their ballot arrive late! Are you KIDDING me?!

It's not right that the ballots were sent out PAST the deadline. We're all overworked (well, that is if we even HAVE a job), but priorities must remain intact...that being, in this case, getting the ballots out to US personnel overseas by the deadline.

This is really sad. The file clerk fails to do her/his job properly and the young men and women fighting for our freedom don't get ballots. Now this is truly and without question disenfranchise. And where is all the left talking heads on this?
The Left is so concerned about disenfranchising voters, Where are they????
This proves to me even more, they just don't want ID to cheat.

The topic of the article is how the clerks in Wisconsin, along with the GAB, are disenfranchising the military votes. It is a Federal Law that the votes be sent out so that they can be returned in time to be counted....why would any citizen be against that?

And just to be clear, if Romney visits a college do you think that they don't make special arraignments and have classes closed? When President Bush visited colleges that same didn't occur? It's a historic event for anyone to see the sitting President speak, regardless of party affiliation. Presidents have to have tight security, Presidents have to campaign, it's just the way things have to be.

I appreciate your comment, concernedwi, which was refreshing after all the underlying digs against college students. Casting all college students who attended as just wanting to cut class and start their beer-drinking early? Seriously?

Janesvillecomments, The same thing could be said about why Romney and Ryan held a rally in Waukesha instead of at the GM plant in Ryan's home town.

Thank you for the compliment, MooShoo. After four years of watching Obama stumble around the Oval Office, hoping that his liberal agenda will fix the hard, cold, realities of national economics and international politics, anyone who still supports him should be disparaged.

I suppose there's a reason why Obama visited "78 square miles surrounded by reality" instead of holding a rally in Janesville, where all the GM workers would not be able to take the day off to attend and celebrate his successful debate after 4 years of growing the economy and reducing the Federal deficit...

". . . mailed passed the Sept. 22 deadline. "
.
I believe the writer meant to say ". . . PAST the Sept. 22 deadline."
.
Apparently bad grammar is trickling up from the commenters to the reporters. I was afraid of that.

29,998 might have been college students. My friend and I that went were not. We are hard working people that actually work on weekends and happened to have a Thursday off. Don't assume stereotypes are true and paint with a broad brush, you will be wrong.

30,000 college kids in a liberal city flock to see Obama continue the 5 billion dollar lie even though he was corrected three times on national television.
One point.. Obama can say anything on the stump to the mindless but eye to eye he can't defend his lies. I should say one eye as he couldn't even face Romney.

..GAB disenfranchises the military vote. Good Morning Wisconsin, nothing new here..

Say it's not so!! The lefties at the GAB disagree with Gov. Romney? Please notice Kennedy has to mention the number 37, obviously indicating it's so inconsequential that it wouldn't make any difference anyway. Otherwise, why would he do so? Like the lefties that don't like voter ID and say, "oh, there just isn't enough voter fraud to warrant a change". Believe me, my vote is very important to me, I don't know about yours..

30,000 on Bascom Hill and 2/3 of them were students using the rally as an excuse to cut classes (in the cases where their liberal instructors didn't helpfully cancel classes) and start the weekend beer drinking early. There's a reason why mid-weekdays are reserved for college campus appearances (which can provide big crowds that working-class cities can't during the workday) or for high-priced contributor luncheons and dinners for people who don't have to punch a time card.

Mooshoo, 30,000 people in the college town of Madison. Big deal. 8 points behind in polls? Who the heck believes polls? these are the same polls that said Walker would lose. What a joke. Most of us are at work and do not get polled. I can not wait for November.

fearanddummies... I suppose you believe that police officers and firefighters should be allowed to vote late as well since they too are putting their lives on the line? What, then about our veterans, they put their lives on the line as well?
I do absolutely agree with you about your second comment. Each side only fights for the side that they think will help them.

These people have their ballots in time for them to be returned and counted. Sounds like the a non issue, or as the Republicans call it, a centerpiece to their party belief system.

I disagree with this, I believe that anyone serving overseas that for whatever reason cannot get their vote in by the deadline SHOULD be granted an extention. They sacrifice for us, we should sacrifice for them. I could care less if the ALL vote for Romney.
Now of course being honest if this block were in favor of Obama the Romney campaign wouldnt care any more about them than they do about the millions of minority cvoters that they would hope to discourage with meaningless voter ID laws that were crafted solely to win elections for Republicans, just ask the State senator from Pennsylvaniaa, a Republican.

The GAB refuses to follow Federal Law, and chooses to disenfranchise the military vote. Where is Obama? As the CIC he needs to address this issue.
