Walker calls for tougher domestic violence laws
MILWAUKEE (AP) — One week after a deadly Brookfield spa shooting, Gov. Scott Walker says Wisconsin needs to tighten its domestic violence laws.
On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Walker said the state didn’t do enough on the local level to enforce domestic violence laws, and didn’t do enough to stand up for victims.
Last Sunday, Radcliffe Haugton shot seven women at the Azana Salon & Spa. Three died, including his estranged wife, Zina, before Haugton killed himself.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/XFiKUp ) that over the past decade, police were called to the couple’s home 20 times — seven for possible domestic violence. They never made an arrest.
Walker did not say what he wants changed, but said efforts to make the laws stronger need to come from local, state and federal levels.

Cry liberals and fade away after Romney victory just as you did after Walker kicked Barrett's butt.
Your politics exposed are losers for moderates and independents.

Walker does not care and this is another public relations event for him. We all have great empathy for those involved in the shooting recently, but I find it hard to believe him helping. Keep in m ind that he used some of his Criminal Defense money for the John Doe Investigation to hire a public relations firm for himself. It is all about his image of helping himself! Also, same guy that against helping others in Badger Care(17,000 people plus are OUT) & his opposition to the FEDERAL Health care Law.

WAke up, this is not about Walker, it's about women or men that are being abused. Maybe we should be looking out for these people. Stop blasting Walker for wanting to stop hurtful people.

This from a man who is actually advocating cutting programs that benefit women, especially those at the poverty level. They will be trapped in an abusive relationship if they have nowhere else to turn.

I stand by my statement, and that is why "restraining orders themselves are not a complete solution"

Answers are so easy for people who have NO first hand knowledge.
I said...."Restraining orders have never made anyone safe."
The sad fact is, restraining orders (in some cases)have given people a false sense of security.
This article is calling for "tougher enforcement of domestic violence laws"....AGREED.

wislady - apparently you didn't read this: http://www.gazettextra.com/weblogs/it-ta...
.
"research has indicated that restraining orders are effective in many, if not most, cases. A 2009 study found that obtaining a restraining order was associated with an elimination of violence in 50% of cases within 6 months. Two studies from Seattle found that women with restraining orders were less likely to be abused, compare to those who did not obtain them.[1] In addition, 86% of women with restraining orders report the order either stopped or reduced the abuse.[2] Restraining orders themselves are not a complete solution. The restraining order process must be complemented with accessible victim services, safety planning, active and consistent enforcement and a community coordinated response to domestic violence."

Wislady, no, but it at least gives the police a reason to arrest someone who violates one. If you don't get one and you call the police, they will just tell the person to leave.
