Ryan says he misstated marathon claim

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Saturday, September 1, 2012 - 7:44 p.m.

Republican Paul Ryan now says he didn’t run a marathon in less than three hours as he claimed in a nationally broadcast interview.

The vice presidential hopeful acknowledged Saturday he had misstated his marathon time by more than an hour. He released a statement correcting the record after Runner’s World magazine found evidence he had completed one marathon, in 1990, and finished in just over four hours.

Ryan told radio host Hugh Hewitt last month he had run a “two hour and fifty-something” marathon. That’s a pace of less than 7 minutes per mile for the 26.2 mile course — extremely fast for recreational runners.

Ryan said he should have rounded his marathon time to four hours, not three.

Paul Ryan ran a sub 3 marathon, and now you can too, just sit back and let Paul figure it for you.

He uses the same method to figure out how he's going to balance the budget while lowering taxes and increasing defense spending.

The Romney-Ryan method for telling the supposed "truth."

1. Tell a lie.

2. Repeat it again and again, and deny that it is a lie to all who ask.

3. Keep repeating process for all lies until enough gullible and uninformed Americans think that the lies are true.

Such Republican BS!

Based on Paul Ryan's many lies told at the Republican Convention, I imagine in the next few weeks he will tell Americans that he:

1. Was an astronaut who walked on the moon on the same mission as Neil Armstrong?

2. Discovered America.

3. Is half Black and half Native American.

The new Romney-Ryan campaign slogan should be: "We believe in LYING to America!"

No, we don't expect it to the "nano secord," or the nanosecond for that fact, but getting the accuracy within, say, 33% or so would be nice. I imagine his budget proposal has less than 33% accuracy. But, you'd be happy to make apologies for that as well, wouldn't you?

"Two hours and fifty-something" to "just over four hours." Think about that. That's off by over an hour on an event he claimed lasted just under three hours. That's the equivalent of a person with a 2.9 GPA claiming they had a 4.0+ GPA. Now come on, all of you apologists led by bowlgal and mayhem08, let's get real. Yes, this happened 22 years ago, but every person I know that has been out of school for 22 years, or longer and had GPA's under 3, KNOW that they weren't valedictorians of their class!

This isn't a matter of incorrectly recalling his marathon time. It's another case of him saying untrue things and getting caught at it. Except now, he has an army of apologists slapping his back and saying, "It's OK to lie, Paul; all Americans are liars!"

David Maraniss is an associate editor at the Washington Post, and he is the author of Barack Obama: The Story.

The mythologies range from early on when, for instance, in high school in his memoir he says that he wasn't a starter on his basketball team because he "played black" and the coach "coached white." Of course I discovered that, in fact, Barack Obama was about the eighth or ninth best player on that team, that he was one of the few players who couldn't dunk the ball. So it had nothing to do with race.

usaret; this article isn't about any of those other people. But after doing a little more research, he seems to fall more into the sociopath definition:

"A sociopath is typically defined as someone who lies incessantly to get their way and does so with little concern for others. A sociopath is often goal-oriented (i.e., lying is focused - it is done to get one's way). Sociopaths have little regard or respect for the rights and feelings of others. Sociopaths are often charming and charismatic, but they use their talented social skills in manipulative and self-centered ways."

I can't believe that I am going to defend Ryan, but I think it's fair to draw a clear distinction here. Repeated studies show that we all tell these types of lies about ten times daily! They are typical of all h. Sapiens. This may show a lack of self-control for a man of his stature to not better control this tendency in a public interview, but it is not necessarily an indication of a truly dishonest man. On the other hand, the GM comment at the convention was a premeditated comment that demonstrates a willingness to engage in deceit to win at all costs.

The issue is that lying and misrepresentation of the facts seems to be a way of doing business for the Romney/Ryan campaign. What Romney and Ryan are counting on is that most people don't actually READ anything from a reliable news source. They are hoping to garner the attention of people who simply believe what they hear from whoever is shouting the loudest and whoever will give them some kind of hope to cling to. Their promise to make things better is great - we all want that - but if you actually take time to understand the Republican positions, see who they are being influenced (aka - bought) by you understand that we will all be living off the scraps that happen to trickle down from the top. (don't even get started on Women's health - that is another topic all together) Additionally I am not impressed that Ryan is using the plight of the people of Janesville affected by the closure of GM to further his own agenda. He knows full well that the Obama administration had nothing to do with the closure - it was a done deal - but he is continues to bring it up in hopes of rallying support from people who are looking for anyone to blame. When I saw the headline I couldn't help laughing at all the intelligent comments it would generate from the Left. So far I haven't been proven wrong. The comments are just the normal run of the mill, repetitious, boring BS. I am sure there will be numerous more. All the while, ignoring the Liar in Chief and his walking mate (I can't picture Biden as a runner).

Anyone who has run a marathon (I have) knows the meaning of Ryan's boast. Those of us who run 4 hour marathons (like me) are hobbyists only -- those who break 3 hours are in another class of ability and seriousness. I suspect Ryan knows enough about marathon time hierarchy to try and get some mileage out of a loose claim to have broken the 3 hour mark. This is the kind of thing someone who is always looking for a way to improve one's image might slip in to signal membership in a more elite group. As it is, Ryan's many self-serving distortions are simply bolstering the growing view that he is a grotesquely disingenuous man.

Mendacity is common in politics -- but Ryan is a superstar of baloney.

We don't want this fellow anywhere close to the controls.

billnewbie- Get real. Ryan lied just as he and Romney lied constantly throughout their Convention speeches. If you want to support such liars without credibility, be my guest.

I am going to support the much more honest ticket of Obama-Biden, which has been working hard to lead America for 4 years -- despite considerable Republican OBSTRUCTION by Mr. Ryan and others:

To correct his "misstatement," Ryan had to "round" his "imaginary" time up by more than 33%. This is like him saying prior to the election, "Under the Ryan/Romney budget, taxes on middle income earners won't increase."

And then, after the election when people start asking why their paychecks are so much smaller, him saying, "I misstated that. I should have rounded that up to being 33% higher than what taxes had been under Obama/Biden."

Well said 916WI, of course the left is foaming at the mouth in anger/fear of Ryan and Romney and Walker.

The hateful people on here used to upset me, now I laugh at it. So childish, so immature. Obama and Doyle and Biden and Sheridan, they all had their chance, and many of us think they failed. Romney/Ryan and Walker will have their chance, then we shall grade them on their performance. The left was dancing in the street 4 years ago, how's that Obama Hope and Change working for you now?

The point is, people were questioning his speech at the convention. Maybe he misled rather than lying. But in a minor interview, about a non-political issue, he casually lied to make himself look better. Even the conservative radio host said "Holy smoke" when he claimed his time. Doing a 2:50 time in the marathon is unusual. Runner's World investigated and found two lies. He hasn't run more than one marathon, and his time was over 4 hours. He was slower at age 20 then Sarah Palin (with a supposed verified time).
It comes down to honesty. At the convention the GOP can say every speech is the usual political posturing. (With teleprompters for everyone but Clint). But lie about personal sports achievements when it's unneeded shows his character. And he got caught, in an easy to verify matter.

That pesky evidence! How do you "round" an actual time of "just over four hours" down to "two hour and fifty-something?" That's some really creative and enthusiastic "rounding," isn't it? The concern with this incident is that it reflects the creative and enthusiastic "rounding" in the Ryan/Romney budget proposal.

fordfan: The question was asked by Hugh Hewitt, conservative talk show host and blogger. He was apparently genuinely interested in Ryan's image as a fitness nut. Runner's World followed up because they thought it would be awesome if a national candidate were an elite marathon runner. The Ryan campaign told Runner's World where to find the information, apparently unaware at how inaccurate their own candidate's numbers were.
