Ojibwe plan to kill elk alarms Wis. DNR
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are expressing “deep concern” about plans by Ojibwe bands to kill a single elk for ceremonial purposes.
The DNR sent a letter to a tribal organization Tuesday. The agency wrote that plans to kill an elk this year would be a “setback” in relations between the state and the tribes over elk management.
About 185 elk live in the Clam Lake area of Ashland County. Currently Wisconsin has no hunting season for elk, although one could start as early as next year if the elk population exceeds 200.
A spokeswoman for the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that tribal members had not had a chance to read the DNR letter, and could not comment.

so they have their traditions, and you all have yours....this is part of their religion and way of life, and our gov't should really have no say in their affairs-they live by their rules in their sovereign nation, and this will occur within their reservation...even if the DNR repopulated the elk, the elks don't recognize the human boundaries we make...
mrsjoe has it right on the head with her comment, and I agree with her statements, and IMO: we shouldn't be in the business of overpopulating the deer herd for the sake of sport hunting...deer destroy crops and forest ecosystems and shouldn't be found in groups of more than 5 deer/acre...

I forgot to say, deer included as depleted. I wonder when the 'operation repopulate whitetail' will take place? Sure seems to me it is far overdue. :(

If anyone has been paying a tad bit of attention, the Elk were placed to try and repopulate by DNR ... wolves are a problem because of the DNR. They have set forth the action to kill off all the natural prey, therefore they are becoming an issue of safety. SO, let's repop the Elk and equal the food chain again, and then allow people to shoot them to a dangerous low again so we can again have a problem with wolves so we can shoot them again. I just don't get it.

If their treaty allows this, then no big deal....
If their treaty does not allow this, they should be treated just like any other poacher, or person that illegally shoots an Elk.
No brainier here...

they spear fish each year using the modern technology (boats, lights, trolling motors etc,) taking females right off the beds in shallow water. Since that is okay for them to follow their tradition in that way, should be fine to go shoot the elk they want in a fenced in game farm and not touch the wild herd.

Maybe the State should let these people partake in their religious ceremony.
So does this mean that the elk can't be killed by anyone?
What about all the Elk preserves and elk hunting things I seen when I googled elk hunting in Wisconsin?

Mrsjoe, your statement is competely erronious considering that mere mortals are the reason the wolves have rebounded, and that the Elk pop. would increase due to less wolves because of a DNR sanctioned wolf hunt. it is all because of human intervention.

With the upcoming wolf hunt, I'm sure there will be an increase in the elk numbers thereby creating a "need" for an elk hunt. Funny how that little problem just worked itself out. Mother Nature is better at fixing it's own problems than we mere mortals are.
