DNR schedules elk reintroduction hearings
MADISON—The public will get a chance next month to sound off on state wildlife officials’ plans to bring more elk to Wisconsin.
The Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a series of two-hour evening hearings in Hayward, Philips, Ladysmith, Black River Falls and Pewaukee during the first week of October.
The DNR estimates as many as 180 elk roam northwestern Wisconsin in the Clam Lake area. Agency officials have been discussing importing about 275 elk from Kentucky. They want to use the animals to bolster the Clam Lake population and establish another herd in Jackson County.

I would only worry about another imported disease for our native animals

Elk roam the entire Western side of America and Canada. I'm sure WI can handle a few more. As an ex elk hunter from the Western states, I can say that I miss it terribly.

The only problem with them reintroducing more elk to the state, there always will be ramifications for bringing something back into the ecosystem. What's next, dinosours? I know that's a long stretch but you get my point.

Last week we spent 4 days in the Clam Lake area, and were fortunate to have the chance to see the elk and get a photo.
