Parents ask Wis. Supreme Court to take mascot case
MADISON — Parents of students in a southeastern Wisconsin school district have asked the state Supreme Court to decide whether the state schools superintendent can legally order schools to drop American Indian mascots.
James R. Schoolcraft and Craig Vertz sued after the state Department of Public Instruction ordered the Mukwonago Area School District to drop its Indians nickname and logo. A circuit court judge blocked the DPI’s order but the 2nd District Court of Appeals upheld it last month, ruling Schoolcraft and Vertz had no legal standing to sue.
The men’s attorney, Samuel Hall, asked the Supreme Court on Friday to take the case. He argues state statutes that allow DPI to order schools to drop tribal nicknames are unconstitutional.

I will always consider myself to be a member of the graduating class of 1986 Milton Redman, and proud of it.

Why not get rid of all the mascot names and issue each school an ID number.

I agree this is all a huge waste of money. I don't think any of these nicknames are meant to "mock" or insult Native Americans in any way. I believe Florida State was willing to change, but the Seminole tribe did not have a problem and actually took pride in the school's nickname. Mountain out of a mole hill?

Vikings Redskins, Cowboys, Fighting Irish, Bohemian Rapsody what does it matter. take the honor with standing up for your heritage. It is not a dishonor in any way shape or form. I dont care if you call yourselves the East Cupcake Warriors. If you are from East Cupcake Iowa and you are proud of it > Leave it alone

Curious: how did the "native" Americans get here? Did they suddenly "poof" appear? Did they simultaneously evolve along with other humans after the big bang? I have watched specials that they came to the North American continent by walking across the Bering Strait during the last Ice Age when it was frozen. I do not know. Do you? I believe they are immigrants just like the rest of us, only earlier than many. And fought between tribes for control of territory in some cases as well. So I see them as no better and no worse than the rest of us. Make Notre Dame drop the "Fighting Irish" nickname as it stereotypes the Irish as being scrappy fighters instead of peaceful people. P.C. run amok as usual. A proud American who also to have some Irish ancestry.

If this went through the Appeals Court and is (possibly) headed for the Supremes, I don't think they are venue shopping. Seeing as it was in the 2nd district, it was likely originally filed in Waukesha County, that bastion of conservatism.

It's unfortunate that people think it's OK to appropriate someone else's name and image, and when asked to stop, choose to take the matter to court. The bottom line is that these are not OUR images to take, and keeping them when permission is not granted is the same as theft.
.
Claiming that the images are "meant" to be respectful is a non-starter. It has no relevance. This is not about intent. This is about a people with a fully realized culture who have been reduced to being treated as cartoon warriors, as if that is the be-all and end-all of their people's existence. It is even more offensive when religious imagery and paraphernalia are part of the mix, like the "tomahawk chop" or the "peace pipe". Try to imagine how you would feel if your culture were turned into an act by a culture that considers you a conquered people who has no voice.
.
We are in the midst of a new continent-wide movement to recognize the rights of native peoples to respect. These people did not come here to take away your mascots -- we came here and turned them into mascots. We're in violation here and the least we can do is allow them to access the courts to ask that we stop, a basic right available to all citizens under the US Constitution ("petition for redress of grievances").

@badgerboy: I agree about the wasting of money comment. The libs (aka DPI Tony Evers for instance) NEVER miss a chance to waste money on the frivilous. They seem to always be about making decisions based on emotions only and therefore they are generally wrong.

dtb, I'm guessing administrators have far more complex and time consuming issues to concern themselves with rather than what name or icon to call their sports teams. It's the parents making mountains out of fly specks, and cherry picking which courts they can persuade. So so tired of all this effort and waste of tax dollars.

So we know what the parents want and we know what the state wants; where does the school administration fit into this? Which side are they on?

I'm not offended by "Viking" mascots. With their menacing appearance and being notorious for raping and pillaging. Now, if you were the Mukwanago Casinomen, or the Mukwanago Roaring Drunks, THEN, I would see how Indians might be offended.

This whole mascot thing is a bunch of crap.
What is wrong with people...Indians (or Native Americans) as well as others should be proud of these schools, as they were meant to be respectful mascots.
Another example of a minority of idiots getting the attention and pushing thru the court systems on laws never meant for this crap.
Good thing there isn't a "Pretzel" sympathy organization, or Freeport IL would be in trouble....or how about the WI town of Cobb and their "Kernels" ?????
Hey wait a minute, I think I find Freeport to be offensive..maybe I should go to court and have it renamed...
Get real you meatheads.
Rant Over..but dead serious.... :-)
